Let's get this established first - the beer here is outrageously good, the pizza is excellent and the price is nice.
And yet, I didn't really enjoy my visit. I found the dining room insanely loud and confusing. It was a punishing experience to eat here and I might be disinclined to go back because it is so chaotic.
On the upside, the tap list is huge, including Port offerings and an impressive selection of regional and national competitors, which was cool. The staff was friendly, if a little rough around the edges, which pretty well described the customer base too.

This is much better than San Clemente. Like the SC location, there is little parking around at night, so don't be surprised if you park your car a block away. But don't let the parking situation get to yuor head, as you will be greatly rewarded.
It's not just a place for beer lovers, but also a place for kids too. There are long benches and tables for families to gather, several video gaming machines, a long bar section running on the left side of the place, and an easy to spot order spot for both the food and beer. The place was nearly packed before 6pm, but that didn't stop me coming in for a quick drink.
Roughly a dozen Pizza Port beers brewed at the Carlsbad location, and another 20 or so guest taps. There's a great mix of styles, ranging from the lighter Twery to the more alcoholic Stickly Stout and even a brew with sour cherries. I received my Twerp in a tulip, which tasted very good and was presented well. But generally, expect your beer to be served in the usual shaker. Pitchers are also available as well.
It may had been a short visit, but it was totally worth it. And for sure, the Carlsbad location warrants future visits.

Pizza Port is an excellent place based on quality, service, selection, food, and value. It can be an excellent destination for atmosphere if you go at the right time.
Starting with its strongest points, the quality of their beers is amazing. Regardless of your personal preference, they have a beer on tap for you. Their service is absolutely excellent. Everyone there knows their stuff and is more than willing to impart knowledge on their customers. Great selection with numerous beers on tap, and like I said, I haven't found a bad one yet. Food is reason enough to head over to Pizza Port. Some of the best pizza I have ever had. Not too expensive either.
The atmosphere could range between a 2.0 and a 5.0 depending on when you go there. Personally, I am preferential to having my own table or booth. The seating here is all long picnic tables, similar to cafeteria seating. This is all good when the place is at half capacity. However, if you get there when the place is packed, you'll spend half an hour creepily hovering over seated diners waiting to snag their seats. Then again, the fact that the place is so packed despite the lack of seating is testament to all the things that they do right.

Pizza Port Carlsbad has a relaxed, group-friendly atmosphere, with long communal picnic-table style seating, and a long wraparound bar. This location has the best atmosphere of the Pizza Port locations I've been to, but the floorplan does leave something to be desired. When busy, the line for beer can reach 30+ people, crossing paths with the food line, and snaking at the end through people trying to enjoy dinner and the crowded food pick-up window area. Great vibe, cool people, perfect atmosphere when not crowded, but the long, messy lines can sometimes be more than a hassle.
The quality of both the beer and the food is world-class. The pizza is made to order, the ingredients taste fresh, and the fantastic house beers are brewed onsite.
Service is decent, though not great. Bartenders sometimes leave one's glass empty for a bit too long as they BS with friends and co-workers. Though I get the impression all the employees mean well, sometimes they seem a bit lackadaisical. As with any place, some servers are better than others, but as a whole, the service is nothing better than average.
Wonderful selection of on-tap beer, with lots of house and guests beers to choose from. There is often a beer on tap that is not posted on the overhead board, often Pliny, Consecreation, or Supplication. Ask, and you shall receive, though I don't think they're serving the community by not posting all the beers offered. I'd head here after work far more often (and thus, spend a lot more money) if I knew specifically what (fantastic beer) was being poured that day.
The pizza is world-class. The anchovy pizza and garlic buddies are standouts.

One of my favorite places to go as a Carlsbad local...when it isnt crowded. The pizza and beer is the best in CBad, but the crowds SUCK when it is busy.
The beer selection is great and if you know the secret password you can even one or two that are not advertised on the board... ;)
I love the pizzas here! Now I know for some in this world (looking at the NYC people) pizza is supposed to be this thin, greasy, cardboard like amalgamation of dough, cheese, meat and veggies... However, IMHO, pizza should be thick, flavorful, and overflowing with toppings, that is what PP serves.
Get the Carlsbad (pizza), it is spectacular!

PP San Clemente will always be my hometown haunt, but Carlsbad is definitely doing it right. Beers were absolutely awesome.
Carlsbad just lacks the funk of San Clemente. Beer selection between the two is very close. Sometimes Carlsbad has better stuff, sometimes San Clemente wins. Carlsbad has some nice outdoor sitting as well.
Really good bartender (bartendress?) was knowledgeable and friendly. Got pretty drunk and don't remember who the bartender was after her shift.
Absolutely awesome place. Completely and utterly worth checking out. This place is probably my top choice for all of North County (yes that includes Stone and Lost Abbey). It's casual, mellow and about a 10 minute walk from the beautiful Carlsbad beaches.

PP Carlsbad, possibly the crown jewel of the PP empire.
This is a one-level PP with plenty of communal tables and others off to the side. A fairly long bar is split by the all-too regular line of customers waiting to order beer. A seperate line for people waiting to order food is perpendicular.
The beers here are seriously top-notch. The house beers are exceptional and the guest beers are to the same standard. It makes it quite difficult to decide sometimes. As with other PP's, most beers are available by the pint or pitcher, with the big ones served in 10oz tulips with no growlers or pitchers available. The pizzas are delicious here, and there is no table service. You order, you pick up.
Without doubt, this is a world-class brewpub, and with that being said I have several gripes with PP's in general:
Babys: All the PP's are quite festive, and by that I mean lots of locals putting back lots of beers as well as birthday partys for thier kids. Being from NH my wife and I find it a bit odd that so many people bring thier children (and babys and newborns) to a brewpub to party down. As a parent it is hard to look the other way when toddlers are fast asleep or begging to go home from the bar at midnight especially on a school night. Or a newborn no older than a few days is passed around the table like a pitcher of beer for that matter.
Lines: Lines to order a beer or food should be a rarity. If you are not going to pay someone to wait tables, please hire an extra person to work the bar or food area to keep the lines down. I wait in line at the bank, I shouldn't have to do it when I go out for food and drink.
Filthy tables: As all the PP's seem to be run exclusively by young kids, it is apparent that it is nobodys job in particular to pick up the trash, trays, glasses, or filth from the tables after people leave. It's gross and unacceptable.
All things considered, what Gina and Vince are doing is certainly a great success, and I would love to be a regular of any of the PP's, especially the Carlsbad locale, regardless of any drawbacks. I just feel that the pubs could certainly be run in a more professional manner.

A great pizza and beer joint. They have a constantly changing lineup of beers, some brewed in house as well as a solid guest lineup. Their pizzas are second to none. Lots of televisions to watch sporting events, video games for the kids. Can be quite crowded at times. They also have a bottle shop next door with some amazing finds, and you can have pizza brought over if you want a more low key atmosphere.
I ablsolutely love this place.
Be sure to ask for the wheat beer crust on the pizza and I highly recommend trying the Carlsbad Pizza, it's by far the best pizza I've ever had.

This place is great. Pizza, amazing beer, old school video games, an outdoor patio, and an awesome bottle shop next door. What more do you need?
Huge beer selection. Lots of great Port taps and many great guest taps. You can spend a week here and not try everything. High praise for the beer selection at this spot.
Pizza was very good and having multiple beers along with the pizza did not hurt.
Crowd was great every time I've gone. A lot of families, along with groups of serious craft beer drinkers. Nice mix. Service is very good, very efficient. Like the way they have it set up with food and beer lines separated.
Absolutely make it over here if you are in the area. Wish I could go more than once a year!

Visited 8.11.11 and previously in 2009.
Located on the main east-west drag in Carlsbad, IMO this is the epicenter of the Pizza Port brewing empire. More than capably manned by Jeff Bagby, King of SD-style IPAs, this is a must stop for the traveling BA.
The primary room features several communal picnic tables which would comfortably hold about 20-24 patrons and several smaller tables strewn about. A very family friendly environment. The brewing system is located to the left of the front door, with the main bar right behind it. The selection, of course, is top notch, featuring a number of choice guest taps (Dogfish Head, Stone, Victory) along with the killer house beers. My buddy and I shared a pitcher of Poor Man's DIPA, one of the best IPAs on the planet. Service at the bar was quick and attentive, he poured me a taste of a more esoteric offering when asked.
The main difference between the Carlsbad and San Clemente Pizza Port outposts is the pizza. Carlsbad is much superior, in large part due to the utilization of real pizza ovens, as opposed to the conveyor belts used at SC. Moreover, the crust was quite tasty. We had a vegetarian offering on whole wheat crust, and this was one of the best whole wheat pizzas I've had since BoJo's in the Colorado mountain town of Idaho Springs.
While the prices are a bit on the high side, the quality of the product is impecible. We were so smitten we ponied up $24 for a growler of Poor Man's for a weekend tasting. To be honest, while this doesn't have the atmosphere of the Stone garden area, I'd be a happy camper sitting here for an afternoon drinking Mr. Bagby's fine offerings. Highly recommended.
