Light peach orange color, slightly cloudy. Large white rocky foamy head. Aroma is very fruity (oranges and apples) and bready and yeasty. A medium bodied Belgian ale. Malts are sweet and fruity, with oranges, apples, pears and apricots. Yeasts are bready with a touch of banana and clove. Nicely balanced. Light and refreshing. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and dry. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

Dumpy 33cl brown bottle with a green front label, amber only mentioned on the rear label (as noted by the review before mine). Best before 7th Apr 2011, drank and reviewed 16th Jan 2011.

Poured into stemmed 'Forbidden Fruit' goblet, slowly, but allowing the sediment to enter the glass.

Good white bubbly head, cloudy amber body, with small specks of yeast, grist and whatever suspended within, but only because I let the sediment in. Lacing clung to the side of the glass as I drank the beer.

Sweet malty aroma, candy sweet in fact, with fresh biscuits and toffee apples.

The taste was not as sweet as the smells indicated, although there is a lot more malt content than hops. The hops do however appear towards the end of the mouthfeel and adds a nice finish to the flavouring.

This brewery produces loads of different beers, all seem to be very good, I'll keep looking for them on my Belgian travels.

My bottle looks different from the one on here but on the back says "Origineel amber bier" I am surprised I have yet to review it as it has been one of my favorites over the past year or so.

Very nice looking beer, deep orange amber in color. big somewhat dense meringue head that lasted and left some nice sticky lacing.

To me the smell was all must and dark ripe grapes with a bit of alcohol.

The taste, wow, where to begin. I read one of the reviews and someone mentions barley wine flavors and I agree, however if you could somehow brew a Barley wine / Saison hybrid I think that this would be pretty close. You get the musty, ripe grapes, some and malt sweetness in the beginning, and an earthy, peppery dry finish with a bit of funk spread throughout. I love it!

Medium bodied and smooth to begin with a little thin at the end. I could easily drink this any time. It makes me very happy!

Bottle: Poured a hazy amber color ale with a rather large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of semi-sweet Belgian malt with some lightly spicy yeast. Taste is also dominated by some semi-sweet Belgian caramel malt with some spicy yeast and light dry hoppy finish. Body is quite full with good carbonation and no signs of alcohol. Overall I would say that this is a slightly above average Belgian ale - easily drinkable.

Murky, orangish color. Lots of sediment flecks, suspended and on top. Huge foaming and lacing.

Good spicing on the nose, slightly sweet but of course quite funky as well. The flavor takes most of that as well, quite fruity. Earth, pepper, grass, some citrus. Faintly clove-y as well, phenolic yeasts jump in.

Medium mouthfeel, carbonation is restrained but still quite high. Body could be larger...

I don't understand the style pigeon-hole. Similar to some other Strong Dark Ales I've had in a broad sense, this is an amalgamation of many examples of that and other styles: Belgian Pale Ale, Amber Ale, mildly wild ale. Not bad on its merits, but if it's to be judged against Rochefort 8 it's going to take a hit.

Who is Reinaert de Vos, Alex? Poured a murky, lemony yellow color with a soft and ample head. Great retention and lacing through out the tasting

The nose is sweet with some limited malt and a sugary aroma. Some lighter citrus with a light tart aroma that is more of a lemon then orange. A nice herbal yeast aroma with light phenolics. Some darker fruits, plums and raisins as well as a subtle peppery finish.

The taste is more balanced, with the malt coming out. Some bready and a sweeter caramel balances a slight sugary sweetness. Yeasty characteristic are noticeable but toned down. A nice tart more green apple and lemon flavor comes out. As the beer warms there is a peppery finish that is nice.

The body is light but some unattenuated feel as well. A smooth feel with velvet texture really is becoming. Overall a very nice beer.

Poured a clear golden color, small head, a little lacing.

Smell is grainy , some alcohol , and bret come through.

The beer initially comes off as a triple, then the slight spiciness and tartness are apparent. A nice barnyard finish.

Mouthfeel is thin, crisp , good carbonation.

Overall this is a nice beer, I wouldn't consider it within style guidelines (Belgian Strong Dark Ale), but would drink again.

The beer poured into the chalice crystal clear at first and then a sludge mass went in causing a murky medium amber color. The head was light and off-white and lasted just enough to lace the glass.

The aroma was lightly corny and tart with a caramel presence. Some dark fruits of raisins were present, but not at a high level. Also notable was a low butterscotch and an earthiness with a very light spice.

The flavor was caramel with a butterscotch flavor and maltiness similar to that of a Scotch Ale. The flavor contained a very light spice and a light dark fruit character which had raisins at a low level. As it warmed the flavor seemed to bear more diacetyl and the aroma the same.

The finish was lightly malty with a lasting butterscotch. The body was medium with a moderate carbonation. An ok beer, but nothing to seek out. The complexity was not well achieved and the butterscotch and diacetyl seemed to be a bit high.

Quite a delicious treat. Reminded me of a bock.

A - Red/brown body with a medium off white head with staying power. Lots of sediment floating about. Very unfiltered.
S - Prune kind of a malt smell.
T - Liquorice, light alcohol and heavy maltiness flavors.
M - Strong but not overwhelming flavors roll about the tongue fully.
D - Very, though the alcohol is a little too strong for me, just a little.

Clear orange in color. The head is full at first with large bubbles and white color, but dissipates quickly.

The nose is of sour cherries and a kind of musty scent, which Im not sure is something favorable or not.

First you get hit with the sour, tartness but not as consuming as a grand cru. That musty scent in the nose translates into a leathery taste, not as bad as I was anticipating. Yeasty and sweet malt. The hops are light in flavor but offer a good bitter, spicy characteristics. Hints of roses and sorghum.

Thin to medium mouth with a pleasant finish. Just a little cloying.

Considering my initial skepticism after the first scents reached my olfactory, I found this beer to be exceptionally enjoyable and its complexity to be something worth trying again.

Wow for not knowing anything about this beer. I'd say I got lucky!

Poured clear amber, effervescent with a 3 fingers+ offwhite head. Superior lacing & head retention.

SmeLL; Slight fruit fruittiness& then yeast notes.

Taste: Huge fruttiness followed by sour/tartness. Slight leather notes follow then finishes fruiity,dry & with a slight alcohol burn/spice note

MF: Vinous with a good carbonation level

Went down too easy, way better than expected, but very pricey...

Appearance: Pours a cloudy medium amber body with a fluffy head that leaves splashes of lace around the glass

Smell: Smells similar to a candy apple, just not quite as sweet; some yeasty and woody aromas add to the complexity

Taste: Starts out with a slightly sweet caramel base upon which some apple, peach and candi sugar flavors appear; nice earthy hop bitter and woody finish

Mouthfeel: Medium to thick bodied with moderate carbonation

Drinkability: Uniquely flavored ale that defies categorization; definitely not a BSDA; the fruity flavors are unique and enjoyable

Appaearance: Almost-clear, apple-juicy brown with big bubbles and big bits of yeast. Head is fairly small but has very good retention.

Smell: Y'know that sparkling apple cider you drink in lieu of champagne when you can't serve alcohol? Yeah, well... it's like that. Tart, fruity, sweet, and also rather doughy.

Taste: First thoughts: "hmm," and then "wow." This is an unusual but delicious beer. That apple from the nose is there, as is the alcohol. A bit of zippy hop bitterness gets you on the side of the tongue. Finish is tart, like underripe berries or granny smith apples. Serve this one with fruit-based desserts or pork products.

Mouthfeel: Somewhat muddly and thick, with a warming alcohol presence.

Drinkability: I do like this, but it leaves me wanting something.

Purchased this thinking it was the Reinaert Wild Ale, was therefore a bit disappointed to find this is not as tart as I would have liked. Some reviews mentioned a bit of sourness, I could not detect this at all. This was a decent representation of a Belgian Dark Ale, I wouldn't call it a Strong dark ale at all. Decent flavor, mild phenols, mild everything really.

For the price (3.99/11.2 oz) I was disapppointed, but I would still like to try Reinaert's wild ale.

BB 28-10-06. Nice presentation with lasting white head leaving laces and a beautifull almost clear amberbronze beercolor. Fresh and fruity nose having koreander, ripe apple and a hint of citrus. Further good maltsbacking and quiet sweetcandy. Taste is sweet koreander, malts and medium to low bitterness that fits the brew as it is an easy drinkable brew without anything crazy or special to me. Balanced well and enjoyable to me.

Dark orange, made even darker by a flurry of suspended dark bits that I was unable to keep out of the glass. The wonderful looking cap of orangish beige foam is heavily cratered and deposits scads of thick lace on the upper reaches of the glass. And probably the lower reaches eventually.

I like the nose. It's sweet, sour and slightly funky all at the same time. It's also impressively fruity and is one of the peachier aromas to have emanated from my glass in many a month. Sweet, spiced peaches don't sound good to eat (to me anyway), but it works for this beer.

The flavor is just as good, thankfully. I'm not sure how I can add to my aroma description in any meaningful way since the same words and phrases apply on the taste buds. The peach flavor seems more dried peach to me than fresh peach since it's so sweet and so earthy. Of course, that earthiness comes from either the hops or the yeast. Or both.

The spiciness is definitely clove-like, but isn't as pungent or as piquant as in some Belgian beer. I don't get BSDA at all. A Belgian pale ale and Belgian amber ale hybrid, maybe. I didn't use the word 'strong' on purpose since the alcohol is beautifully masked.

The light-medium mouthfeel and the neutral carbonation are right where they need to be for maximum quaffability. However, I'd still like to see a slightly bigger body; especially since the ABV isn't conducive to sessioning anyway. Not really a misstep so much as a preference on my part.

Reinaert Flemish Amber Ale, with 'the legendary cunning fox' proudly displayed on label and cap, isn't much of a BSDA, but it is pretty tasty no matter what style one wishes to assign. Part of its appeal is the fact that it uses the same basic flavors as other, similar beers, but combines them in new and interesting ways.

01/07/06- Purchased at Sun Devil Liquors in Mesa, AZ.

Presentation- 11.2 oz stubby bottle. No freshness information. Poured into a chalice like glass.

Appearance- Almost a DIPA-esque coloring. Rust orange in color, 3/4 inch head which settles down to a light rim and light lace.

Smell- Not a real big smelling beer. Some roasted malt, a bit of sweetness and maybe a bit herbal.

Taste- At first when you swish it around in you mouth you think it may be a tad sour, but when you swallow the first bit, it tastes more sweet than anything else. Not super sweet, but traces of powdered sugar. That is followed by a pretty good amount of malt with a bit of caramel in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel- About your average carbonation, maybe a bit on the higher side. Just a bit of a bitter aftertaste.

Drinkability- Drank while my Redskins just advanced to the second round of the playoffs, so any beer would have tasted good at that time. Overall, a decent of slightly better than average ale. Not sure I would call it a strong dark ale. After three other beers and this one I'm still not feeling anything.

11.2 oz stubbie that cost $3.—at The Cheese Monger’s Shop in Leavenworth.

Poured a peach color, with a decent sized white head. Moderate amount of lace for a Belgian beer.

Smell was of mildly sweet malts, along with a mild, citrusy sourness.

Taste was like many decent micro amber ales, but with a Belgian spin on things that made it much more memorable. The grapefruit-like sourness was an excellent accompaniment to the mild, sweet maltiness that seems to be a part of most amber ales.

This seemed to have less body than most domestic micro ambers, and was more akin in the mouthfeel department to a Belgian pale ale.

This was a nice departure from the average amber ale. If this was available in my area, and was a little cheaper, I could see myself drinking it regularly.

Seeing a new and different Belgian ale on the shelf was a nice surprise. It came in a stubby 11.2 oz. brown bottle with a black fox on the label. It's reddish-orange with a rather frothy head that leaves lace all the way down the glass. The smell is on the slightly sour side, as is the taste. This one took just a little while to grow on me. By the time only a few sips were left in the bottle, I was wishing that I'd bought another. It's an interesting brew and one that I'll probably revisit at some point in the near future.

The beer spills from the bottle a murky amber, the head Bunyanesque in size, spumescent in texture and a nice light tan in color, the lace is a thick and sticky sheet to meld with the glass, lots of dross in suspension and lazing on the bottom of the glass. Nose is sweet malt, hints of bubble gum, fresh and crisp to the senses, start is quite sweet, lightly malted, top a bit slim also. Finish is modest in its acidity, the hops pleasing to the palate, aftertaste dry as the desert wind, slightly sour, drinkable, but nothing to “scream about”!
