Gotta give it up for Sam for continuing to roll out some new takes on offbeat styles. This attempt at a gose pours a lightly hazy sunset golden-straw topped by over a finger of white froth. The nose comprises white bread, soap, lemon rind (the waxy outermost part of the rind), light coriander, and a kiss of baby's breath. The taste unfortunately brings in more of the same, with the soap really coming forth as the frontrunner. I get hardly any citrus character, and whatever spice notes are there are meek at best, busy being consumed by the soapy bread enveloping them. Needless to say, the whole experience is unpleasant, leaving a bad taste in my mouth (literally, for once). The body is a very light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a fairly dry finish. Overall, this is a pretty insipid gose, one that doesn't come close to exhibiting any of the characteristics of the style. All of the top four Google Translate definitions of Verloren apply here: Something was definitely "lost" in translation, the effort comes across as "wasted" and retrospectively potentially "doomed" to failure, and I am "forlorn" after having partaken of it.

LOOK: Pours a deep golden color, soapy white head and plenty of lace. Mostly clear, but a later pour had a small cloudiness. Active carbonation rising to the top, looks like a typical pale lager that would suit the gose style.

SMELL: Savory bread, coriander, malt sweetness and mild hops are all available in the aroma. Intriguing and smelling very beer like.

TASTE: Lagery and bready flavors, with a very small tartness, and a hint of coriander. With added sodium, there is a layer of savory flavor, but for the most part salt is undetectable. Mostly just a mildly sweet and tart spiced lager. For 6% the alcohol is well disguised.

FEEL: Medium bodied, well carbonated, lingering drying spice.

OVERALL: An enjoyable beer. Tasted with a friend, we both detected the coriander, and really thought this beer was well made. I enjoyed the tartness and subtleness of the spice/salt combination. A bit less lactic than my favorites of the style, this is still worth trying if you get the chance.

This is my first "gose." Here "gose" (haha, not funny):

Batch No. 1:

Into my stange:

A: cloudy golden and gives a one finger white foamy head that dies fairly quickly to a half finger. Minimal lacing lasts for about ten seconds before sliding into the body. No carbonation is seen rising due to a cloudy body.

S: coriander up front with some buttery malty/caramel thing going on, interesting.

T: sharp and salty bringing back the coriander and that buttery malty/caramel thing.

M: medium to heavy with nothing sharp on the tongue.

O: since this is my first gose, I'm not quite sure what to say about how to compares to other "goses," but this is at least do-able for me, average at best, and would probably only seek again on tap or growler just to get a fresher look at this one.

1 pt. 6 fl. oz. poured into a globe. Can’t find a bottle date.

A: Cloudy golden with a fairly quick dissipating one finger white head. Above average lacing.

S: Very interesting. Heavy coriander. Some fruity Belgian qualities. A little buttery caramel (diacetyl?). Beyond that, the aromas are familiar but really difficult for me to put a finger on.

T: Nothing too sharp. Some butteriness. Lots of fresh coriander and orange peel. Pretty smooth overall. I guess there's a small amount of saltiness, but nothing more than I might normally notice.

M: Full flavored and interesting. Body is medium to full. Much fuller bodied than most other coriander “summer beers” that I’m used to. Carb is minimal.

O: Assuming this is an accurate example, I can see why this style hasn’t taken off. It has the summer flavor that appeals to many (not me), but is fairly heavy to drink and lacks the scrubbing bubbles that people ordinarily associate with warm weather refreshment.

A - Pours an orange-straw, mild haze. Very thick smooth white head that slowly gives way to clumpy lacing.

S - Coriander. Munich malts. Noble hops. The Ocean.

T - Coriander. Sweet malts. Fruit. Munich malt. Way, way in the finish through to the aftertaste almost a marshmallow sweetness.

M - Light-medium. Soft.

O - A really simple (at first glance and taste) beer that is uniquely drinkable. Softer than one might imagine.

A: Pours a hazy copper color with a thin but really creamy tan head. Great retention.

S: Wet hay, coriander, some faint wheat, salt and maybe some orange rind.

T: Grainy and toasty. Definitely way heavy for a Gose. Some faint coriander and wheat with some biscuity malt undertones. A bit bready on the finish.

22 oz undated bottle served in a Trois Pistoles snifter.
Pours a hazy apricot-amber color with a small eggshell head that soon settles to a partial coat. Plenty of visible and felt carbonation.

S: Delicate fruity, biscuity aroma.
T: Dried apricots, salt, coriander, white pepper, light yeast, biscuits and a hint of orange marmalade in tasting. Nice mix of sour, sweet, bitter and salty.
M: medium-light body with medium high carbonation.

O: Refreshing and easy drinking beer with well hidden alcohol.

Apparently coriander is the same thing as cilantro.... The more you know.

A: Hazy orange color. Thinish head. Looks like a squash or something.

S: A little light on the smell... A little malt plus a little lemon lime.

T: Lighter in taste but some very nice notes. A great orange note plus a little more gritty back note. Some malt.

M: Bubbles are pretty powerfull but it's alright.

Overall I quite liked this beer despite the bad reviews. It has some very nice fruity notes but also some spicy notes. Tastes like a fall beer or so.... Also pretty easy drinking.

[Suggeasted Glassware: Tulip Glass]

The pour was a hazy orange with a slight red hue and an average (1-2 finger) white fluffy head that was mostly diminishing, down to a small collar with very nice streaky lacing.

The aroma was of a biscuit malt and a damp doughy yeast with notes of wheat, citrus (lemon), coriander and a mild hint sourness.

The taste was lightly sweet and yeasty with a good citrus presence throughout, with the finish having a mild tartness and a hint of spice. The flavor lasted an average time after the swallow with a decent spicy wheat taste, which was left behind to settle in on the taste buds.

Mouthfeel was almost medium in body with a smooth creamy texture and a medium carbonation.

Overall this was a very good tasting brew with a great drinkability, and although I have never had this style before I can most definitely see myself trying it again...

A - Pours with three fingers of white foam on top of a hazy, dark golden body. The foam settles at a moderate pace and leaves sticky webs of lace.

S - Some tart wheat, musty coriander and herbal hop notes.

T - Thick wheat up front with notes of coriander. Some vanilla and tart wheat in the middle and a finish of light, herbal hops.

M - a moderately thick body, slightly low carbonation, and a balanced finish.

D - This doesn't really fit in with other goes beers that I have had. It is almost completely lacking in tartness and while it has some coriander flavor it isn't as pungently lemony as others. Just kind of a thick, nondescript wheat beer.

A: three ginger head on a murky amber with golden hues body.

S: grains, pale malts, musty hop character,

T: lots of sweet breads, pound cake, grains, caramel malts. No booze to speak of coming through. Hints of tropical fruits.

M: medium body and moderate carbonation. nicely smooth.

Overall: for the style and my liking this beer and its ranking are about as good as a Gose can be IMO.

A - orangish amber with a huge, white, dense head that has great retention

S - straw, some coriander

T - straw, coriander, bready, caramel, alcohol, citrusy

M - warm, medium bodied, well carbonated

This is a nice beer. The malty, wheaty, hoppy flavor is well balanced, and this beer has great drinkability. I really enjoyed this beer.

This poured out as a really nice looking orange color with a rather fluffy white head on top. The smell of the beer reminded me of a pretty standard wheat beer, I wasn't really picking up much of the coriander in there. The taste of the beer is slightly salted, it mostly comes through once you lick you lips and it kind of lingers on the back of the tongue a bit. Otherwise the flavors are soft and very mellow. The mouthfeel of the beer is decent, just a typical drinkable brew with a good body and carbonation. Overall it's a neat beer to try, it's not anything overly special just a pretty cool idea to make one of this style today.

22 oz bottle. Pours hazy orange with a short lasting, fluffy, white head and lively carbonation. Fruity aroma is of pears and apples followed by grassy noble hops, yeast and sweet malt. As I've never had a Gose before this is hard to rate.
It looks and smells like a unfiltered American wheat ale. Gold and hazy with a soft looking head.
Smell is all wheat.
Taste is mostly orange. I'm not tasting the salt. The wheat does add to the crisp taste.
Feel is also like an American wheat ale but a bit more creamy.
Not a bad beer, but now I must try another Gose to compare.

Batch #1, poured from a 22oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a dark gold color, with a large off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains wheat, bananas, citrus, caramelized malts and some hops.

T: The taste starts out bready with flavors of wheat and a hearty but not too heavy malt character. Then some flavors of bananas, citrus and a touch of spice come in. The hops presence is mild but complementary and brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly bready and slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, decent kick, good representation of style, it’s a solid beer with drinking for a while if you’re in the mood for the style.

Pours a tall, >2cm head of off-white bubbles that are fairly small and dense, giving a very frothy appearance from above. Retention is above average, with a few minutes elapsing before dissipation is complete. What results is a thin cap of off-white foam atop the beer, thicker at the sides. Modest lacing is left hanging on the glass, a few streaks and dots, mostly. Body is copper-brown in color, with light bringing out orange-copper edges and a light brown center in the body. Despite the hazy body, some carbonation is visible.

Aroma is bright, sweet and floral, of wheat malt, faint chamomile, salt, and old, faded coriander seeds, with a slight dustiness on the background.

Flavors are overall sweet, herbal, slightly bitter, and surprisingly dense or heavy. Tasting opens with surprisingly heavy wheat malt sweetness and a bit of coriander. Mid-palate continues influences from heavy wheat malt, coriander, and some noble hop bitterness and phenolic compounds. Back of palate picks up some salt or minerals, with traces of wheat malt and noble hop flavors and bitterness. Aftertaste is sweet overall, with nuances of wheat grain; some spicy, herbal, and bitter hops; and traces of coriander.

Body is medium to medium-heavy in weight with medium to medium-low carbonation. Resulting mouthfeel is surprisingly dense, but also smooth and easy to drink. Finish is dry, as might be expected from the wheat malt base and added salt.

Batch 1

A: Pours a hazy golden yellow to orange in color with some light amounts of visible carbonation near the surface of the beer. The beer has a half finger tall white head that reduces to a mottled surface of very thin film and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Light to moderate aromas of wheat malt with notes of coriander and orange peel - some light amount of sweetness to the smell. Just a hint of yeast aroma as well.

T: Very similar to the smell with the main flavors being that of wheat, coriander, orange peel, and just a hint of salt.

M: Just shy of medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Nice amounts of dryness.

O: Only the second beer in this style that I have come across so I am glad that I purchased this one and tried it. Seems to be pretty true to the style and easy to drink.

Cellar temp bottle split with Stopper. Pouring into a snifter.
The beer pours a clear copper hue with thin tightly packed bleached white head.

Aroma is grainy malt and some sweet fruit with white grapes the most dominant scent I can detect. I do get a bit of mild orange as well.

First sip reveals an average to light body with fine spacious carbonation. Flavor is caramel and fruit with orange and white grape again. Overall the flavor is very mild similar to the nose.
No flaws in the beer but the brew is average at best, certainly not very memorable.

I am disappointed as there arent many examples of this style readily available and this one just didnt make me want to try others.

Pours from the 16 oz bottle into a pint glass. Pours orangey amber with a nice sized, stark white, foamy head. Lacing is all over the place on this one. Head recedes rather slowly and crates a cloud atop the beverage.  

Aromas was a bit lackluster.  The only way to describe this one is that it smells like beer. Some caramel, but mostly grainy with a touch of belgian like spices in the way of white pepper and coriander.

Decent flavor. I dont think i have ever had this style but this one doesnt seem obtrusive or offensive so i imagine this beer is based around the style profile. Slight caramel, malty, thin on the body, some spiciness to it in the way of coriander and even a bit of what seems like belgian candi sugar.

Overall this beer wasnt that bad. I have had better beer overall but i think this one serves its purpose. Its a rather flavorful, light bodied beer that is easily quaffable and very nice on a hot summer day. Body was light and but not parching or super dry. I liked this one.

Pours hazed light amber with a thin head.

The smell is of saltwater with coriander and yeast. It has a "Sam Adams" house aroma with a bready wheat tang.

The taste is of coriander with soapy sea water. Some Saaz hops come through to "save" it from being spicy soap ocean spray. Some lemon tartness comes through as it progresses.

It is pretty creamy. Fairly smooth, though too salty and becoming too soapy.

An "interesting" brew. It's a rare style...It doesn't quite compete with the original from what I remember (been awhile since I had the original.) It has some flaws, but worth checking out as a novelty.

Hey, time to try out my first Gose!

Pours out a clear yellow pilsner color with three fingers of soapy head that lasts for about three minutes and leaves nice loops of lacing behind on the glass surface.

Smells mostly of powdery yeast and lemon peel, with lesser amounts of wheaty twang, and a sprinkle of soapiness and lactic tartness. Come to think of it... it really *does* smell like a toned-down in intensity Berliner Weiss.

Tastes primarily of salt-sprinkled caramel candies. As it warms up flavors of lemon rind and a bare whisper of that lactic pucker appears. Light body and vigorous carbonation. Tasty and certainly different from the average beer.

No bottle dating, but it does say Batch No. 1 on the back.
An aggressive pour.

A- Pours a slightly hazy deep golden almost orange color with 4 fingers of thick, soapy off white head that is receding slowly and does not appear to be lacing much.

S- Not exactly the most aromatic beer. Some mild earthy aromas, mixed with grains. Some spice notes.

T- Hmmmm. Kind of sweet. Very interesting, hard to put your finger on an exact flavor. There is some lemony citrus, a hint of salt, and various spices. Unique, with the sweet/salty lemon flavor.

M- On the high side of medium body. Moderate amount of carbonation.

O- This one seems pretty easy to drink. Glad I tried it, but not willing to front the 7 bucks for another bottle. It's great that Sam Adams has taken the time to look back through time and revive a long lost style, hats off to them. Keep the obscure styles coming, I will try them all.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours hazy golden orange color with a nice fairly dense 2 finger off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice and very unique aromas with good balance and strength. Taste of lemon, orange, pear, wheat, grass, salt, coriander, light pepper, earth, floral, and herbal spiciness. Lingering notes of citrus, floral, wheat, bread, grass, salt, and herbal spiciness on the finish for a bit. Good flavor balance and complexity; fairly dry on the finish. No cloying flavors at all. Medium carbonation and body; with a lightly creamy and pretty crisp mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with almost no warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a very nice brew. This was my first gose and this was quite a nice experience. Nice flavor balance and complexity; very smooth and crisp to drink. Really enjoyable.
