LOOK: Pours a clear dark amber color, with a pillowy froth, not much lace.

SMELL: Highly caramelized Munich malts, giving off sweet bready notes as well as toffee, caramel and multi grain toast.

TASTE: Malty, very authentic tasting dunkel beer. Mild leafy, citrusy hops are kept well in check but add a pleasant bitterness to the toasty caramel malt profile. Has just a touch of clove like spice. Perhaps more fuller bodied and richer than many of the style, that is hardly a complaint.

FEEL: Full bodied, well carbonated. This richly malty beer has depth and character, and drinks very easily.

OVERALL: Flavorful and balanced, this Munich style Dunkel tastes like it came from a small town in Germany. Expertly executed by the Boston Beer Co, this is one they should have kept around.

A- This beer pours a dense brown body that glows at the base with a thin head that soon boils away.

S- The aroma has some Munich malt in the nose with a bit of a coffee malt hint but it is pretty clean in the nose.

T- The grainy flavor of pale malt has some pot caramel notes coming through as it opens and hints of roasted biscuit malt for a moment in the clean finish. There is a spicy hop hint in the aftertaste.

M- The medium-full mouthfeel has a tight little fizz.

O- This beer seems a bit thick and heavy but not much malt flavor or it is all muttled together.

A: Translucent chestnut brown in color. 1-finger head with fairly strong lacing. Foam is off-white in color.

S: Vaguely sweet, but muddled. Hard to detect much of anything.

T: Definitely tastes like a darker, German beer. Faint traces of hops, apples, and a crusty dark loaf of bread.

M: Lightly carbonated. Surprisingly, it's refreshing for a darker beer.

O: Pretty decent offering from the Sam Adams Longshot pack. I think unfortunately, it's overshadowed by the other two beers in the six-pack, which are both excellent entries.

Poured into a pokal/pilsner glass. This beer pours a clear deep amber/light to medium brown color. Has a head that is 1/2 inch when first poured that settles to a nice thick ring lining the inside of the glass along with a nice coating of foam settles on the surface of the beer. Decent lacing. Aromas of slightly toasted bready malt are nicely present, and not much else here smellwise. Flavors of slightly toasted bready caramel malt upfront followed by somd dark fruit flavors of prunes and plums along with perhaps a slight hint of clove, a bit of vanilla, and perhaps a slight hint of cocoa as well. Very nicely done here! No discernible hop flavors though. Has a crisp, yet smooth and creamy, slightly chewy, medium to full bodied mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. An excellent beer, one of the best that The Longshot Series has produced yet!

"Corey has been working on his Munich-style Dunkel for some time and the result is this amber, medium-bodied brew. With a nice malty backbone, this lager has roasty, slightly spicy notes and a traditional doughy character from the yeast. It is well worth the time he took to perfect it." Brewed in the style of a Munich Dunkel Lager, available exclusively as part in the Longshot Variety 6 packs, a one time release best-of-competition lager. Although I purchased this in November, the date on the bottle is ticked at Mid-August 2012. First of three reviews from the series.

Poured from a 12 oz. glass to a pilsner glass. Served north of 58º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a thin crispy foam head that recedes slightly below average, color is a nutty cream white, lacing is thin and droopy. Body color is a deep amber red with some pale coloration at thin spots, carbonation presentation is medium. Light creamy surface cover. Pretty nice appearance- I like the body color and depth but the head and lacing could be of better quality. 3.5

(Smell) Malt presence is mildly spicy and earthy, deep caramelized malts in aroma, very toasty munich. Generally clean but also bready lager yeast aroma, a slight puff of grainy bitterness is also notable. Some mild bitter hop presence is notable, mostly earthy blends. More malt forward but not overly sweet; it's rather complex. I much like the aroma- whether it is common for the style or not, the malt complexity makes for an intriguing anticipation. 4

(Taste) Doughy, sweet yet rasp malt character with a little earthy and nutty bitterness and alcohol puff on the back end. A bit doughy sweet malt forward but falls short on bitter qualities as well as complementary body- thin mouthfeel doesn't pair ideally with the complex malt profile of this beer. It needs something thicker and/or creamier. Flavor-wise, it's quite drinkable despite having some huskiness to the malt bill, but doesn't have the ideal balance that I think it should. 3.5

(Mouthfeel) Medium+ body for the style, medium overall. Very shallow carbonation presence, not quite creamy in texture, it's just a touch fluffy. Alcohol presence is medium. Carbonation is in general a bit lacking throughout- this one could have a touch more froth or cream to better compliment the malt bill and accentuate the flavor. 3

(Overall) Pretty nice Dunkel Lager, it's a bit cloying at times due to the elevated sweetness and the carbonation presence is shallow. I could envision this being fine tuned to a far superior beer but due to my recent introduction to the style, I'm just glad to have tried something new and can't find any major flaws that would keep me from enjoying another of these. 3.5

Pours deep brown with an enormous lasting big bubbly head, leaving lots of lace. Bold malty aroma. Smooth creamy, easy drinking dunkel.A nominal amount of roast (which I would want a larger amount of). FInishes sweet. Although not spectacular taste, I enjoyed it. Dry sugary aftertaste.Thanks John.

These longshot beers are all very good...I think a lot of them should be regular line up beers.
This one is no exception, killer brew...could not get enough of these. If they revive these in the future, grab as many as you can!

I am not sure where a "Dunkel" fits in with a Porter or Stout, this one was dark and heavy like a stout, but had more flavor qualities to it.

picked up a case of the long shot beers, poured from the bottle into a pilsner glass. nice color that reminds me of either maple syrup or cola. tiny bubbles and a decent head. nice smooth flavor of coffee and maltyness. wonderful aroma of caramel. the body isn't to heavy and goes down smoothly. glad the people at sam adams give a chance for the little guy to have his or her beer tasted by the people of this nation.
