Served on tap in a sample glass.

Appearance: Dark brown color, with a thin brown head. Very little lacing on the glass.

Smell: Malts, Coffee, some chocolate. Not overpowering, but great smell to it.

Mouthfeel/Taste: Smooth and medium to full bodied. Taste of coffee, chocolate, and malts that were well balanced.

Overall: Great take on a coffee type stout, one of the better stouts I have had lately.

Single finger head on a dark body with little light passing through which produces a reddish hue. Standard roasted malt and hint of coffee aroma you would expect, nothing great or special. Flavor is much better with sweet milk chocolate throughout. The coffee and roasted malts add a lot of flavor without being too bitter. Excellent lacing with medium to thick body and light to moderate carbonation. Very drinkable beer. I like coffee heavy beers but there is enough coffee to satisfy coffee lovers but not too much to turn off those who aren't coffee fans.

Brown-black with a light beige head. Some lacing. 3.5

Lactose, black coffee, and kilned malts. Mild sweetness. 4.0

Coffee grounds, some milk stout qualities, charred grain, cocoa, and a dried berry character similar to Craisins. Mostly malt bitterness in the middle, finishes semi-sweet. Astringent tang at the end. 3.5

Medium body, medium carbonation. Fine bubbles. 3.5

Nothing worth seeking out, a very average coffee stout. 3.5

Poured a very nice dark brown (near black) with some very nice initial head and a bit of lacing as it went down. Nice scent, some good roasted grains and a very nice coffee hit in the nose. Good flavors, well balanced with roasted grains, bitter-sweet coffee flavors, the tiniest hints of chocolate, and a nice coffee and slightly earthy bitter finish. Went down well, this is a good coffee stout.

12 oz bottle into Deschutes tulip snifter

A - Not much head, retention, or lacing - but some. Beer is a very dark brown/ruby with bits of khaki foam.

S - Slighty burnt coffee grind character, bits of sweet dark malt. Nothing that offensive, really, but not much to write about.

T - The coffee flavor is dominant, but it has that same kind of wet coffee grind character. Tastes a lot like carbonated coffee, but not particularly good coffee.

M - Not as oily as I'd like, but not bad. Carbonation is a little off - closer to a cola than an American Stout. It's ok.

O - Drinkable but not impressive. Concept is ok, but they need a better coffee component if they do it again. As is... Next, please!

12 oz. bottle poured into a Sam Adams perfect pint glass.

Appearance: Pours dark brown, almost black, with a very thin beige head dissipating quickly.

Smell: Caramel, cocoa, roasted malt. Some coffee, but it is very faint. Smells like a solid dry Irish stout, but not a coffee stout.

Taste: Again - caramel and cocoa are the most prominent flavors, with toasted biscuit and bittering hops, and just a hint of coffee. Coffee flavor is not particularly developed, and comes off a bit stale.

Mouthfeel: Pretty light bodied, which is further brougt out by a high carbonation level for the style. Could use more body and less carbonation.

Overall: Comes off as a very average stout that is really lacking in the coffee department.

Another winner in the long line of Samuel Adams great beers. Coffee Stout, I allways wonder if there is really any coffee used in this or not? It is a mystery sometimes with Chocholate and coffee flavors, which both csan be derived from malted barley alone.

Coffee, malt, slight caramel notes

This beer combines roasted coffee, with a full-bodied stout. Using dark fruit for this beer is what contributes to its black color. Other ingredients include chocolate and caramel that make for a great combination. The ABV is 5.8% and goes down smooth with the mix of spices and hops Samuel Adams is known for. Great taste and perfect after a Black Friday shopping spree. This particular brew is only available in winter. Take a break after the long weekend of shopping and get this dark beer while its in season.

Pours from a 12 oz. bottle into a standard pint.

A: Black. Pours about a half finger, foamy, brown head. Settles slowly, leaving a spotty blanket of foam on the surface. Solid beer ring lacing.

S: A little roasted espresso, more roasted malt. A little pungent hay, and slight molasses.

T: Malty with a good amount of pungency and a strong woody tone. Black licorice, grass, and charred malt. A little molasses and cola.

M: Hearty, but crisp. That char-roasted malt tone sticks to the palette throughout.

D: Sip and enjoy.

Atmosphere is good. Dark hue, nice foamy head, pretty heavy lacing. Nose is roasted malt and espresso with woody and sweet tones. Pungent roasted components make up the flavor base with some bitter and sweet notes. Well-balanced. Overall, this is a pretty good quaff.

Pitch black with a one finger head. Some lacing.

Nice coffee aroma. It smells like when you walk by the coffee shop at the mall

An overall dark roasted flavor. Coffee, but not overpowering.

Medium bodied. Nice carbonation.

A great coffee beer with an upfront yet not overpowering coffee character.

12oz bottle was given to me after it was left undrunk from the mixer 12 pack.

Pours a dark brown-black, dense. Creamy latte colored 1 finger head reduces to a thick film. small bubbles streaming up the side of the glass. Sticky lacing.

Smells of medium roasted malt with sweet coffee and cream, a hint of liquorish. Deep and rich but not that complex.

Tastes of dark roast coffee with a much lighter body than a traditional stout, a tad watery. Roasted malt and chocolate flavors with a touch of liquorish bordering on pool water. Burnt malts and slight bitter on the finish.

Overall was surprised by the watery consistency of this brew. Although the coffee is not overdone it is a bit out of balance with the consistency. Drinkable and may be a good introduction to the style but I will not have another.

12oz bottle served in a pint glass.

pours a mahogany / bistre brown tone while yielding a finger or so of frothy tan head. mediocre retention as if fades into a thin cap; some patchy lacing evident. in the nose, obviously coffee is clearly showcased - almost to the point of being somewhat one-dimensional; although it's a nice-smelling dimension. a little chocolate and a touch of roastiness in the background.

flavor is about what you'd expect as it follows the nose pretty closely, maybe drops off a bit. and while it doesn't bull rush the palate with complexity, i'd say it's decent, reasonably tasty. mouthfeel is a bit thin and carbonation is a little high, but nothing deal-breaking.

overall a very solid beer and a nice complement to the seasonal mixed pack. like most sam adams brews it's not going to blow your mind but it holds its own.

A - Pours a dark black-brown color with a finger of frothy mocha colored head. The head fades down fairly slowly leaving behind some nice lacing.

S - Aroma is a mix of roasted coffee and chocolate malts with a bit of black licorice and some light lactose sweetness.

T - Starts off with some roasted chocolate and other dark malts with a hint of dark fruit sweetness and a bit of licorice. Through the middle, some more bitter coffee beans come through with some light lactose sweetness. The finish is a mix of dark chocolate and coffee with some light dark fruit and licorice.

M - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a dry, roasted, and lightly bitter finish.

D - Very drinkable. Good coffee stout. Nice balance of roasted coffee flavors with a stout base.

I poured this beer into a perfect pint glass. It has a jet black body with a small tan head that lays down quickly to a nice lace. The smell is of roasted malt and some coffee notes. The taste does have coffee on the front of the tonuge, also has a roasted malt taste on the back of the tongue. The mouth feel is nice and smooth with a little bit of a coffee after taste on the tongue. Overall i enjoyed this beer but one is enough for me.

32 ounce growler filled at DeCicco's in Ardsley, NY.

Pours black under a dark mocha head. Leaves respectable light bands of fine lacing as well as low sheeting.

Dark malts and black chocolate nose.

Nose follows through onto the palate, more dark malts, chocolate and understated black coffee. Medium bodied, quite enjoyable and easy drinking. Worth a try for stout fans

Let some pork tenderloin have a bath in a marinade with this as a base. Then enjoy with another glass

From a 12 oz bottle into a duvel tulip. Pours a very dark brown, almost black with a finger length tan head that shrinks to nothing and leaves decent lacing. 12 oz. bottle tried 10 Jan 2012. Served in the (512) One snifter.

Medium sized brown head. Well carbonated. Clear very dark brown in color. Aroma is dominated by coffee, roasted malt, some cocoa. Starts relatively sweet, a lot of chocolate to start. Coffee comes through in the middle. Dark fruits, coffee, chocolate. Medium body, light ethanol. Very easy to drink, reminiscent of a mocha cappuccino double shot. Finishes with a roasty coffee bitterness.

A says 'Cookoo for Cocoa Puffs'. In a good way. Which is odd because she doesn't care for chocolate.

A new winter season offering in the Samuel Adams Winter Varietal 12 pack. There were two of these and I'm hanging on to one to see how it does with time. I love coffee stouts, so I'm itching to try this one!

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to the Samuel Adams pint glass. Served at 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a bold tan and light bold head, about a finger deep that retains above average, settling down to a thick and frothy surface cover. Sticky medium lacing clings to the side of the glass. Color is a near black with some slight traces of brown light shining through in small traces. Appearance is really good for this beer. 4.5

(Smell) Roasted coffee grounds and a hint of sweet caramel and lactose over a slightly bitter bean aroma. Coffee essence is the most potent aspect of the brew. Chocolate is far more subtle. Complexity is limited, but what's here is potent and pleasant. Slightly sweet aromas. Enjoyable aroma overall. 4

(Taste) Mild bitter espresso bite gives way to a sweeter candy coffee body than I had expected. Bold mocha chocolate notes come through most in the finish. The occasional alcohol peeks in from time to time but is barely discernible. The taste misses some complexity before the finish, and a bitter coffee ground essence is striking on the tongue. This is essentially another run-of-the-mill Coffee Stout without any striking features to stand apart from the crowd, going for coffee features exclusively, but it has its enjoyable moments. 3.5

(Mouthfeel) Largely creamy, but with a little more carbonation than needed, a bit fizzy on the mouth. Alcohol presence is a light, body is medium/heavy. Not a bad pairing, just a bit too excited to pair well with the taste. 3

(Overall) Don't get me wrong, this is a good coffee stout and an enjoyable one at that, but there are already so many good enjoyable coffee stouts out there that this one doesn't stand apart from the rest, with no real differences. While I wouldn't mind trying it again, I would only in the right time when in the right mood. I do recommend it, however, if you enjoy espresso coffee stouts. 4

Tulip

A - Deep brown, light tan one finger head and some head lacing

S - HUGE coffee, note, lots of acidity, dark chocolate, a huge roasted note, a weird but nice funk note, slight hop, foliage and some charred wood

T - charred wood, very acidic diner like huge coffee note, an earthy hop, soil, greens, a hint of sweet malts, very dark chocolate and an all around roastiness

M - Medium minus body, low balance, low complexity, medium plus acidity and a very long coffee and chocolate finish

D/O - Note the most drinkable beer. Very nice with a sweet desert and a roaring fire. This screams the Christmas season. Better than most of the holiday pack, but not amazing

Final thought - below %6 abv and nothing amazing, this one is kept for the Christmas season
