Here's one I've been really looking forward to. Hell, what do you think I bought the Sam Adams Winter Classics pack for, the Boston Lager? Poured into a beer mug.

A: Pours a almost-but-not-quite pitch black body (put up to a strong light, there are hints of a ruby red color near the edges) with a 2.5-finger mocha-colored head that retains itself fairly nicely. There are tons of lacing clumps on the glass as well.

S: Coffee, with a background of roasted malts, chocolate, and vinous notes. Not the strongest smell, but a damn nice one.

T: As you'd expect, coffee opens up the body, with a malty, slightly chocolatey middle, and a vinous finish. Reminds me of a weaker Samuel Smith Imperial Stout. I like the taste, but I wish it was a bit bolder in flavor.

M: Quite creamy, but rather thin bodied (kind of like Guinness, really), with a slightly dry and underwhelming finish. Carbonation is medium.

O: I won't call it mind-blowingly amazing, but I will call it a very good, borderline great session stout that would make a great alternative to Guinness Draught. The only thing holding it back is its slightly suspect mouthfeel...oh who cares, it's still a must try. Are you listening, Boston Beer Company? GIVE US A SIX PACK OF THIS STUFF NOW KTHX.

12 oz bottle into Deschutes tulip snifter

A - Not much head, retention, or lacing - but some. Beer is a very dark brown/ruby with bits of khaki foam.

S - Slighty burnt coffee grind character, bits of sweet dark malt. Nothing that offensive, really, but not much to write about.

T - The coffee flavor is dominant, but it has that same kind of wet coffee grind character. Tastes a lot like carbonated coffee, but not particularly good coffee.

M - Not as oily as I'd like, but not bad. Carbonation is a little off - closer to a cola than an American Stout. It's ok.

O - Drinkable but not impressive. Concept is ok, but they need a better coffee component if they do it again. As is... Next, please!

Served on tap in a sample glass.

Appearance: Dark brown color, with a thin brown head. Very little lacing on the glass.

Smell: Malts, Coffee, some chocolate. Not overpowering, but great smell to it.

Mouthfeel/Taste: Smooth and medium to full bodied. Taste of coffee, chocolate, and malts that were well balanced.

Overall: Great take on a coffee type stout, one of the better stouts I have had lately.

Serving type: on-tap
