Clear reddish brown colored beer with a small yellowish tan colored head.

Smell is pumpkin and spice with lots of ginger. Pretty much smells like pumpkin pie without the crust.

Starts out sweet with a good amount of spice and caramel. Strange flavor to the malt here something like soy sauce and tobacco leaf at the same time. Ginger and clove dominate the taste as expected. All in all it is OK.

Mouthfeel is good.

Overall, OK I tasted it and now back to something better.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Imperial Pint.

Appearance: Fairly dark reddish-orange with large, bubbly tan head that leaves some sticky lacing.

Smell: Cherry and some floral, spicy notes. That's about it, with only a titch of the pumpkin spices.

Taste: Cherry stands out here as well, but there are also major nutty and roasted notes. Autumn spices add to the profile.

Feel: Fairly smooth, medium-full body but there is a strange off-dry chalky finish that detracts slightly.

Overall: Despite some issues with the aroma and mouthfeel, this is still a tasty brew. And that is certainly most important.

pours out of the 22 ounce bottle a very dark crimson/garnet colour with a light tan head...thin in nature with some decent retention after an aggressive pour. bits of lace. the smoked malts and yeasty notes in the nose are welcome. this gives it a bit of character to go along with the usual pumpkin base malts and spices. the flavour profile is basically a doubled up version of the harvest pumpkin ale...and welcome at that with the smoked malts really adding a nice nuance. it seems extra spicy but i'm assuming the thinly diguised boozy alcohol punch is accentuating the rest of the flavour profile. it definitely has a gourdy, fleshy, squashy undertone that gives it an authencity of a pumpkin ale. this characteristic carries over to the body, which seems rich and full with a mouthfeel that is sleek and smooth sans the boozy overtones. fat jack is not overly drinkable...but could be a nice attitude adjuster on a blustery, cool autumn evening.

overall i have mixed feelings about this concoction. without any other amped up pumpkin beers to compare this to, methinks this is a pretty good ale. but the overly boozy aspect distracts a bit too much, crippling the overall enjoyment. find a way to incorporate the high ABV a bit better into the taste profile and this would be a fantastic fall seasonal.

A – I poured the beer into a Sam Adams pint glass. It was amber in color and got darker at the wider portions of the glass. There were three fingers of head, which subsided within two minutes. A very thin layer of carbonation bubbles stayed on top of the beer.
S – The beer smelled like cheap watered down light or even diet beer, but it also reminds of the smell of some of my favorite amber beers. Not sure why, but amber beers always smell like watered down cheap beer to me.
T – This beer starts out with a deep roasted taste and quickly fades to a bitter alcohol taste. Several seconds after my swallow I taste pumpkin. Not the pumpkin I expected though. Not the sweet kind like in pumpkin pie or pumpkin bread, but bland as if you reached into a pumpkin and put its slimy contents directly into your mouth.
M – Strong carbonation and thin.

Pours a dark amber leaning towards brown with a creamy tan head. Good retention and leaves some lacing.

Smells of pumpkin, caramel, roasted malt, and yeasty earthiness.

Big pumpkin up front with a nice spice bitter punch - definitely get cinnamon, ginger, and clove, but they are subtle and balanced - not obnoxious as many pumpkin ales can be. Has real creamy smooth mouth feel with caramel and roasted malt coming through. Alcohol is well hidden and it is very drinkable. I don't think I could love any pumpkin beer, but this is one of the best I've had, and it surprised me - I was expecting to not like it.

Samuel Adams Fat Jack Double Pumpkin Ale has a medium-to-thick creamy, cream-colored head, and a dark, yet clear, rust color, with thick, splotchy lacing down the glass. The aroma is of strong all-spice, cinnamon, and pumpkin, with some underlying sweet smell. The flavor is of all-spice (Jamaica pepper), cinnamon, lots of pumpkin pulp, pie crust, alcohol, and a back bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium to thick, and Samuel Adams Fat Jack finished semi-dry, sweet, cloying, ragged, and almost too rich and sugary to stomach. Overall, this beer is poorly balanced and an obvious gimmick, of which the Samuel Adams line is becoming notorious. This beer might work for those who do not care for beer that tastes like beer. Overall, it’s a bit of a mess. You might want to try it, but I know I’ll never buy it again.

Into a pint glass:

A: dark brown/black colored body and left a one finger white foamy head that lasted less than twenty seconds. The body was too dark for any carbonation to be seen rising. Some nice light yet filmy/foamy lacing appeared but settled and slid down the sides of the glass.

S: superb as not just pumpkin, but allspice, ginger, clove, some slight molasses and cinnamon speckled themselves throughout the entire "pumpkin" aroma. Big wow (at least to me).

T: had all of these typical flavorings and added a slight caramel flavoring, a bit of malt and some extra rich dark fruitiness to it.

M: medium with nothing harsh on the tongue. This wasn't exactly a very drinkable beer, could be close to a palate wrecker with all that was going on with it. It has a sweet dry finish.

O: though not very drinkable, I really liked this, probably would have been better if I saved this just a tad longer. This is a very good "pumpkin" ale.

This is a solid brew from Sam Adams. This new line of beers has proven to be quite inspired and at the very least respectable from a brewer that has come dangerously close to being macro. Fat Jack pours a deep red color with notes of cinnamon and big time nutmeg. Taste follows suit, but stronger and much more robust than their Harvest Pumpkin Ale. I wish it were creamier like an iced pumpkin or chai latte, but still it ranks highly in its field. Pumpkin ale fans should check it out!

Pours a great looking pumpkin beer. A dark red, mahogany colored beer that turns more orange when held to the light. A medium sized tan head is created that laces throughout the drink.
Smell is dominated by some really strong pumpkin. Great spice smells of cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg. Some nice roasted malts, too.
Taste has a lot going on. The pumpkin is very strong. The roasted malts take the driver's seat and have a very smokey taste to them. I am not a big smoke fan, so it kind of overpowers the sip to me.
Mouthfeel has a silky smoothness to it that goes down easy.
Drinkability is okay. A lot of good sights and smell on this beer, but the taste is overpowered by some very smokey malts. I would give this a try, some would like it better than me.

Ruby hue that shines when brought to the light. Its creamy off-white head dissipates to a thin mist in the glass. Aroma of apple skins up front, light booze, caramel, black cherry, mild pumpkin spice, and honeyed cereal grains. Tastes of caramel-dipped apples, pumpkin spice, nutmeg, undertones of pumpkin vegetal flavor, faint wood and a tingling boozy aftertaste reminiscent of a red wine or a liqueur. Medium bodied with light carbonation that leaves some slickness on the tongue. A sweet, slow sipper that showcases the vegetable nature of the pumpkin behind a sweetened exterior.

A - Body is deep orange-brown and crystal clear. A 1/2 finger of coarse off-white foam forms, but fades to nothing quickly.

S - I am getting over the last dregs of a cold so my sense of smell isn't too sharp, but I can definitely get a good whiff of allspice, clove, molasses, and a rich, sweet fruitiness.

T - Caramely sweet up front. Hints of roasted, biscuity malt. Hop bitterness comes in stronger than expected toward the middle and holds out through the finish. There is also some definite "pumpkiny" vegetal flavor mixed with spices.

M - Medium-to-thick body with balanced carbonation. Finish is sweet and sticky. More of a sipper this one.

Chasing that elusive perfect pumpkin ale...this one is a contender, but it still falls a bit short. It's a clear reddish-brown color. The head is off-white and slim. Great aroma...pumpkin, spice (cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg). It's not a pumpkin pie smell, but is a rich, adult candy-pumpkin smell. Malt, a touch of smoke, maybe a fleeting caramel scent. The flavor is rich and intense, with a diminished pumpkin and some earthiness. Full body. Very nice beer, interesting and satisfying, but not quite exceptional.

Poured into a 13 oz tulip glass. Pours a dark reddish orange, with a half inch of white head that leaves some lacing. Smell is pumpkin, cinnamon, brown sugar, and nutmeg. Taste is what you would expect, very straight forward. Body is medium, enough carbonation, not dry, and drinkable. Now I don't love pumpkin beers, but find this to be exactly what I expect from the style. A easy drinking 8.5 in my opinion. Solid pumpkin brew.

A: pours a clear mahogany with three fingers of tan head that fades into a thin cap with a solid sheet of lacing. The best looking pumpkin ale I've seen.

S: subtle pumpkin spices up front with creamy vanilla and squashy pumpkin aromas. Smells quite nice.

T: pumpkin spices with caramel malts, wheat bread flavors, and notes of vanilla and pumpkin. Moderate alcohol presence on the finish.

M: medium-thick body with lowish carbonation, this beer is nice and creamy, though somewhat lessened by the alcohol burn.

O: a good pumpkin ale, overall. Smells great, though a little too boozy and lacking the complexity of the aroma.

A - An active cascading billowing pour yields close to three finger's worth of densely packed slightly creamy light khaki colored... Excellent retention ultimately gives way to a thick veil of lacing and moderate collar... The color is a darker than expected brown that shows a slight ruby hue when back lit... A limited bit of moderate paced carbonation can be seen streaking along the sides towards the very top of the glass... This one is also audibly fizzy... A very nice looking imperial pumpkin brew...

S - Excellent balance even if the slightest bit understated... Pumpkin pie crust... Nutmeg... Cinnamon... Pumpkin... Squash... Sweet Potatoes... Brown sugar... Nothing dominates and everything compliments one another perfectly... Very nice aroma for an imperial pumpkin brew...

T - A bit of boozy heat is first to great the tongue... Next is a wonderfully balanced mix of all things pumpkin pie... Slightly sweet pumpkin filling... A light graham cracker crust... A nice mix of autumnal spices... Hints of caramel and brown sugar... The booze lingers beneath the surface...

M -Medium to full bodied... A bit dense... Slightly sleek... Slightly sticky... Limited carbonation... Smooth... Even and consistent throughout...

D - Fat Jack is welcome in my beer fridge any time... This is a really really good imperial pumpkin ale that I had expected to be slightly disappointed in given the reviews I've seen, bit I walk away rather impressed... Definitely in the top quartile of pumpkin brews I've tried... If there's any room for complaint its in the "double pumpkin" labeling... Other than the slight heat on the palate, there is little or no indication that this is an imperial or double pumpkin ale... None the less, this is a highly recommended Pumpkin Ale and a damn fine job from Boston Beer Company...

Served from a 22 ounce bomber in a Detroit Tigers beer mug with the Old English "D".

A: Deep amber/burnt orange color. Poured aggressively creating a two finger foamy head dissipating slowly down the glass with substantial lacing.

S: Bock-like aromas with the sweet malt hitting the nose. No pumpkin pie aromas at all (no nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice). Somewhat disappointing. No hops aroma as would be usual for this style.

T: Again, bock-like flavor with the smoked malt really making its presence known. I am getting the smoked malt and rye. I like the maltiness of this beer. Very, very subtle pumpkin pie spice. Almost unnoticeable. Almost a Belgian feel to it. Some spiciness on the finish, maybe from the ginger. No pumpkin flavor. Alcohol is nicely masked in this beer. Very good flavor, just not the pumpkin flavor I would have hoped for.

M: Thick, viscous mouthfeel. Big bodied beer.

O: Great flavor in this beer. I really did enjoy it. Unfortunately, not what I was expecting with a name like "Double Pumpkin". I thought that it show cased the malts and yeast very well, just not the spicy pumpkin and autumn feeling pumpkin beer I was hoping for.

Bomber poured into a pint glass.

A: Clear coppery gold with a smaller amount of off-white head with some lacing left behind.

S: Pumpkin, gourd, squash...whatever you want to call it, that vegetal character is strong in this one...typical spices (nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon) seem to be muted...hint of vanilla.

T: The straight-up pumpkin flavors are here too, dominant but with a noticeable caramel/toffee malt backbone with hints of sweetness to pull the vegetable/herbal character back into check a bit...faint nutmeg is detectable too.

MF: Creamy feel, lower carbonation, medium body with some dryness on the finish.

O: Feels like a 'miss' for my palate but its not a bad beer overall. Just too much like pumpkin and not enough like sweet-pumpkin-pie-dessert for me. YMMV.

A: transparent chestnut brown. Two-finger foam head, slightly off-white.

S: Definite smell of fresh squash (more of a clean butternut scent than pumpkin). None of the cinnamon, nutmeg, or usual pumpkin pie spice scents.

T: Pleasantly sweet pumpkin flavor, which comes out more as you drink more. You get a really BIG pumpkin flavor a few ounces in. A little bit of warming alcohol.

M: Small bubbles, quite effervescent, but they fade very quickly.

O: Different take on the dime-a-dozen pumpkin beer. Starts off "meh" but gets better as you drink more.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, batch 1 bottled recently. Pours crystal clear reddish copper color with a nice 1-2 finger dense khaki head with nice retention, that reduces to a good cap that lingers. Slight spotty lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, caramel, toast, biscuit, allspice, nuttiness, and light herbal spiciness. Very nice and well balance aromas with good strength. Very pleasant. Taste of pumpkin, caramel, toast, biscuit, cinnamon, ginger, nuttiness, and light herbal. Lingering notes of caramel, biscuit, toast, pumpkin, nuttiness, and spices on the finish for a good bit. Nice balance and complexity of flavors, with a great spice balance; with no cloying flavors at all after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy and slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is extremely well hidden with nearly zero warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is an excellent imperial pumpkin ale! Great flavor balance overall with just the right amount of spices; very smooth to drink. A very pleasant and highly enjoyable offering.

A: pours into an imperial nonic a light brown with a definite rd tint to it.this beer sports a quarter inch of light tan head that fades to a small mat and some lacing
S: smells of pumpkin, some cinnamon and other pumpkin pie spices
T: tastes strongly of pumpkin and pumpkin pie spices, a little bit of caramel malt flavor as well. cinnamon is a standout but you can also taste the nutmeg and allspice. swallow brings a lot more pumpkin pie spiced flavor
M: medium carb on a medium mouthfeel a little bit of astringency
O: a bit over the top. nice pumpkin pie flavor and it really tastes of fall but it's a little too in your face. probably wouldn't be a bad beer to share but drinking it solo isn't a wise decision.

22 Oz. picked up from Civera's deli. Looks very promising. Last bottle they had of this stuff.

Appearance: Pours a deep brown that leaves a nice white head behind

Smell: Has a nice scent of pumpkin and some nice tones of spices and somewhat bread-like complexion. I can smell the heavy hops as well.

Taste: Sweet pumpkin malts and some minor spices overtake the palate. Pretty hardy, but also welcoming soft-like tastes. I really liked the heavy hops also.

Mouthfeel: Pretty crisp and smooth, but also finishes with a dry overtone. Medium body with nice carbonation.

Overall: Pretty easy going down. Very nice and tasty and the spcies with pumpkin now bring this beer to a whole. The bitterness brought some very tight flavoring to the sweetness of the pumpkin malts. I will defiantly drink again.

Presentation: 22 oz. stubby bomber bottle poured into a Portsmouth Brewery tulip glass. Served chilled and allowed to warm over about an hour. Labelled as Batch 1.

Appearance: Medium to dark brown in color. Pours a nice one finger beige head with pretty good retention. Sticks nicely as a lacing around the glass.

Aroma: A lot of the spices stand out in the aroma. Ginger and allspice in particular. Definitely some light caramel and pumpkin tones. Also a touch of toasted malt and some cinnamon. The alcohol character is not very well hidden.

Taste: Lots of darker malt character upfront. Some toasted notes along with caramel and pumpkin. The strongest spice note I got is the ginger, followed by allspice. Some nutmeg and cinnamon farther back. The boose is pretty well hidden. Any interesting combination of flavors.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with a nice creaminess to it. Plenty of carbonation.

Overall, a really unigue and interesting take on a pumpkin ale. The malt character paired with the pumpkin provides an interesting base beer for the spices to play off. I did think the spice levels were a bit off for what they were going for. Lots of ginger and allspice created a more savory, less sweet character to the beer. Interesting, but not something I would buy regularly.

Appearance: quite dark, murky orange. Thick lingering swath of off white head and lacing.
Smell: pumpkin and associated spices, nutmeg etc. are present but understated. The smoked malt is a nice touch.
Taste: Ditto for the taste. Again, the smoked malt is a very nice addition. The flavors meld quite well.
Overall: Tried this in honor of pumpkin season and pleasantly surprised.it's a standout.

Poured from the special edition bomber (release 1) into a perfect pint glass.

Pours medium dark brown with some reddish hints. light layer of white foam. Malty smell, mostly caramel. Very minor hint of nutmeg. Some pumpkin taste, some cinammon. Not overloaded. All flavors mild and blended. Smoky too. Real flavor here, nicely done.

Fat Jack opens with a thick, rich, hearty pumpkin pie aroma, the nose immediately recalling grandma’s house at Thanksgiving with layers of pumpkin and heavy spice, including ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove/allspice. The spices might actually be a bit too heavy here, especially the ginger, which easily dominates the spices and actually slightly overwhelms the pumpkin. The malts are biscuit and toasty, adding a piecrust rim, and the sugars are full enough to seem almost like whipped cream. There are also good touches of vanilla and caramel, as well as a liqueur-strong whiff of alcohol, which when combined with the sugars and caramels resembles a cream liqueur. Some light chocolates and coffee. As a whole, the nose is very full, and boasts an impressive range of notes. Again, the spices might be a bit too heavy, but not obscenely so, making the beer as a whole smell like an alcoholic pumpkin pie with about 25% too much spice.

On the tongue, the beer opens with a heavy pumpkin and spice whang, slamming the tongue with virtual chunks of pumpkin flesh blended with, in descending order, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, and cinnamon. The ginger still seems slightly overpowering here, but much less so than it seemed on the nose. Still, the spices are a bit heavy overall. Some vanilla, toast crust, and biscuit float around in the background, mixed with a heavy peppery layer. There are also a few toasted pecans, some caramel, and a heavy dollop of brown sugar. Noticeable throughout the mouthful and lasting into the aftertaste is a vodka-like alcoholic burn that seems stronger than it should be for an 8.5% ABV beer, biting at the soft palate and tongue and actually seeming to increase in potency as the beer is held in the mouth and the sugars die off. When mixed with a medium-high carbonation, this high alcohol burn creates a seltzer liqueur sensation. Otherwise the aftertaste is more heavily-spiced pumpkin pie, and good remnants of homemade crust. Mouthfeel is an oily medium-light to medium.

Overall, this is a decent pumpkin-based beer, and it’s immediately obvious why Sam Adams chose to label this as a “Double Pumpkin” beer: the flavors are huge, and enough raw pumpkin has entered the mix to leave an oily sensation in the mouth after swallowing. The spices are slightly over-large, however, and the heavy alcoholic burn does somewhat detract from the flavors. And just at the edges of the beer is a very raw pumpkin flavor—not pumpkin pie-cooked, but raw straight from the gourd—which is also offsetting. Decent, but could have used a bit more fine-tuning.
