Pours a midnight brown/ghostly black with a loose and creamy 1" settled khaki head. The edges of the head are slightly higher than the center, creating a slight bowl/concave shape. Make me want to break out my skateboard and magically shrink myself and skate it. Crazy, sagging, streching, lumpy, craggy lacework all the way down.
Smells wonderfully fresh of bright, citrus hops and savory, mocha coffee. Masterfully balanced without one overpowering the other. Grapefruity, chocolate malted milkshake.
The graprefruit hop entrance is quaint, but still very friendly. The leathery, slightly smokey chocolate maltiness takes the predominant role. The hops shake your hand and the roasted malts ask if they can take your coat and offer you a seat. The flavors reflect their respective scents quite accurately, again maintaining a skillful balance.
Mouthfeel is soft, creamy with a fine and moderate level of carbonation. The prickly dryness lingers in the flavorful finish.
Overall a beer I'm glad was included in this Sam Adams mixed six pack that I'd definitely buy all on its own. I still am on the fence with the whole 'Cascadian Ale', 'Black IPA', etc. style. I know they classify this as a Black Ale, but I'd say it's somewhere in-between. Wherever it falls on the spectrum, I like it. A lot.

Notes from 5/8/11; Best by Sept 2011
A - Pours black with massive three finger head. Head has excellent retention.
S - Smell is predominantly malts, roasted and chocolate, and some citrus notes.
T - Taste is chocolate malt and piney hops. While the hops definitely play a rolehere and persist in the aftertaste, this is a very malt-forward beer. Some lingering earthiness as well.
M - Medium creamy body, somewhat dry on the finish from both hops and earthy malts.
O - Not hoppy enough to be a black IPA. I'm not sure how this should be classified, but it feels like it can't commit. The hops get a bit muddled. Pretty tasty, but not something I would seek out.
