A - Fairly large (2 fingers) head forms, light brown in color. the beer itself is just slightly lighter than black, showing some dark red shades in the light.

S - The aroma goes back in forward between darkly roasted grain and hops, which smell both citrusy (think Cascades) and leafy, almost vegetal.

T - Burnt grain and coffee flavors dominate, but are a bit astringent and harsh. It doesn't help that it is pretty bitter, which intensifies the astringent qualities. Hops come through in the form of grapefruit.

M - Mild, frothy mouth ends very dry with a harsh, lasting bitterness.

O - The balance of flavors in this Black IPA is a bit off, relying too much on the dark grain flavors, and the combo of astringent roasted malts and hop bitterness is unpleasant.

A - Pours black with massive three finger head. Head has excellent retention.

S - Smell is predominantly malts, roasted and chocolate, and some citrus notes.

T - Taste is chocolate malt and piney hops. While the hops definitely play a rolehere and persist in the aftertaste, this is a very malt-forward beer. Some lingering earthiness as well.

M - Medium creamy body, somewhat dry on the finish from both hops and earthy malts.

O - Not hoppy enough to be a black IPA. I'm not sure how this should be classified, but it feels like it can't commit. The hops get a bit muddled. Pretty tasty, but not something I would seek out.
