On-tap 11/20/2012 at Doherty’s East Ave Irish Pub in Pawtucket, RI, served in a tulip glass.

A: The beer is a deep gold color, with a large off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick but spotty lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is faint but contains honey, caramelized malts, some Belgian yeast and a touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of caramel and honey. Then some breadiness comes in from Belgian yeast and a hearty but not too heavy malt character. There’s a mild alcohol sting. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, strong kick, good representation of style, it’s a decent beer but there are other Tripels that I would pick first.

On tap for the 4th Annual LA Beer Week Beer Festival at Union Station in Los Angeles, CA.

Pours a clear honey orange with a foamy off-white head that settles to a small cap on top of the beer. Thin rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, yeast, and spices. Taste is much the same with a slight chalky flavor on the finish. There is a mild spice bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty and easy to drink.

Pours a clean deep yellow color with an off white head. In the aroma, a small fruit note and a candy sugar sweetness. In the taste, a small fruitiness and a bit sweet to a bigger dry presence, with some alcohol in the end. A small bite and a medium to to lighter bodied mouthfeel, with a dry candy sugar and small alcohol in the aftertaste. A really nice representation of style, a bit sweet, but very nice.

New World Tripel (Barrel Room Collection)
Boston Beer Company (Samuel Adams)
Style: Tripel
ABV: 10.00 %

LOOK: Pale yellow, with a bone white silky head that has decent staying power.

SMELL: Aroma of bubblegum, clove, banana, dusty yeast, and pear. Appealing aroma of a standard tripel.

TASTE: Mild Belgian notes of banana, clove, bubblegum and white pepper. There is a creamy aspect to this beer as well as soft fruit which was nice. Alcohol chimes in but not as much as it could have for a 10% beer.

FEEL: Medium bodied, creamy, smooth, well carbonated, pretty solid feel.

OVERALL: I was glad to get to try this brew. A testament to the brewers of Boston Beer Co, a nice little tripel here with all the right notes. Pretty good!

Served on tap at Mugs Alehouse in Brooklyn, NY

A: Pours a crystal clear golden yellow in color with a finger tall bright white head. The head reduces to a thin layer over the entire surface of the beer and a much thicker ring at the edges of the glass. Significant lacing is observed.

S: Lots of sweetness with a good dose of banana and clove. Nice complexity to the aroma.

T: Very sweet with lots of banana and some clove flavors. Again there is complexity to the flavor.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation.

O: One of the better Sam Adams beers that I have had - it seems like this barrel room collection is significantly better than the classic products. Easy to drink and enjoyable though not a session beer.

very nice head and very fine lacing.head is about 3 fingers.the smell is appealing and very tropical fruit nuance.pineapple seems to predominate.the taste starts off very smooth and appealing, but soons turns sour rather than bitter.some people may like this, but i consider this a fault.the mouthfeel is medium, but slightly hot, however not off putting.except for the sourness,i would have rated this much higher,if not for the sourness.

Hard to pass up these classy packaged bottles from the gang at Boston Beer.

Pours an apricot colored orange with a sea foam head. Decent staying power on the head as well.

Nose is like a Caribbean fruit fiesta. Bananas, pineapple, nectar, and so on. If this wasn't a beer, I might be tempted to throw some rum in here, one of those goofy little drink umbrellas and sip the concoction though a straw. But, no need to get that silly.

The taste reminds me of North Coast's Grand Cru, which I fell head over heels over, though this one is a bit rougher with a more pronounced carbonation. I get honey, mellow tropical fruit, light spices, citrus notes, and a touch of vanilla. Nice combo of flavors here.

I can see drinking this "New World" beer in another world - sitting on a beach, listening to Jimmy Buffet. I may be back soon to grab more of the remaining stock of this one, as I suspect we are in limited edition territory here.

A - Two plus fingers worth of audibly fizzy billowing quickly receding effervescent bone white colored head comprised of uniform medium sized bubbles... The color is a vibrant pale golden honey... Ultra clean and 100% translucent... A slight bit of moderate paced carbonation rises within...

S - Quite pleasant... An interesting mix of tropical fruits and vanilla to start... The tropical fruits take on a pineapple and mango character... There is also a big honey component at the forefront... There is a slight Belgian yeast component... The clove, pepper and assorted other spices linger beneath the surface... For all the great aromas, they blend together a bit to easily and there isn't as much nuanced complexity as I would have like...

T - There is a slight alcohol induced heat upfront that lingers throughout and intensifies on the finishes... It's a touch overpowering and it obscures almost everything else that tries to emerge on the palate... The tropical fruit and honey is completely missing... The vanilla and spices (predominately pepper) are the most prominent, but don't compliment one another well in the absence of everything else...

M - On the fuller side of medium bodied... An over abundance of sharp fizzy carbonation... A bit of heat throughout... Way too rough around the edges...

D - As a lover of both Tripels and Barrel Aged offerings, this one was a bit of a disappointment... The booziness, which isn't off the charts, is strong enough to obscure the rest of this brew... Looks and smells decent... Stumbles a bit in terms of taste and mouthfeel... The overall result is a resounding "meh..." Sorry Samuel Adams, but I hope the rest of teh Barrel Room Collection is a notch (or two) above this one...

A: pours a deep orange with a finger and a half of dense off white head that retains well into a Dogfish Snifter
S: smells of sharp and spicy yeast, fruity esters with a bit of pear and fairly sweet overall
T: blast of fruitiness up front with some spice and some solid malt foundation a bit yeasty and some vanilla and oak as well. swallow brings a blast of alcohol and some fruitiness along with a bit more vanilla and oak
M: heavier side of medium on the palate with a vigorous but still fairly soft carbonation and a drying finish
O: overall not bad, the apparent alcohol in the aftertaste was a bit off putting but it doesn't ruin the beer.

this is the 2nd beer from the barrel aged collection that i have had. this is a good beer, but the "13th hour" had more going on. the smell of this new world triple is somewhat plainer than the other, not to say that this one is bad. the taste is also a bit more mild. this one is smooth and sweet with a warmness brought on by the 10%abv. there some mango and spices mixed in here maybe apricot- reminds me a lot of dried fruits. makes me want to try others in this collection when i can find them.

Absolutely brilliant looking beer - glowing orange-gold with a huge head of dense white foam that really never recedes and lays down thick streaks of foam on the glass. Aroma is rather muted - faint alcohol esters. Palate opens up - orchard fruits, mild spice, rosewater, bit of vanilla on top of a clean crackery malt base, mild herbal hoppiness. The smoothness at 10% is pretty remarkable and it's well balanced and extremely drinkable. Just needs more expressive flavors. And where is the oak?

Bottle was purchased at brewery January 2011.

Appearance: Cloudy golden yellow, good white head, leaves generous lacing

Smell: Fruity, zesty, some malts, spices, very much a good example of the style

Taste: Fruity, cloves, spices, malt, and a bit of a yeasty bite

Mouthfeel: Full carbonation, medium body

Overall: An excellent brew, but it offers little over Duvel, which is much easier to obtain, and easier to open.

75 cl

Pours a nearly clear amber gold, two inches of yellowish white head dissipate pretty slowly from a pillow to a film.

Smells of fresh cut grass, coriander, lemongrass, bananas, esters, cloves, citrus zest, apples and bread.

Apples, bananas, citrus, fresh grassy grains, cloves and light bready malts combine in the taste.

Full body with an expansive, stinging carbonation on the roof of the mouth. A bit of booze warmth.

A damn fine trippel, more than I expected from this to be honest. Really very good, definitely worth trying and perhaps one of the best American attempts at this style I have had.

This was my first Triple experience, and although I enjoy Sam Adams on the whole, this one I just don't get.

It tastes like alcohol flat out. I suppose there is some beginning to some fruit tones and you can tell something complex is being attempted, but again, it tastes like alcohol.

Triples of course are made with the concept of using an obscene amount of malts. Ok, fair enough, I love IPA's for their obscene use of hops, but malts, for me anyway just aren't as flavorful. The result is a giant malt taste,,, and alcohol. If you love malt, malt, and more malt, then cheers.

The look and feel is still there, very reminecient of my favorite Sam Adams Barrel Room beer, 13th Hour. The quality is that good. I just simply don't like what's being attempted, but have no problems with the execution.

A - Pours a deep gold with a finger of foamy white head. Yeast is nonstop going crazy in this beer, the whole time all you can see in the body is bubbles going insane. Great beer just to look at.

S - Crazy Belgian yeast profile up front (is this the Kosmic Mother Funk? I think so), you get a note of tropical fruit or a little apple, some banana, and some woody, wheaty smells. Interesting beer, somehow smells like a tropical tripel (and the bottle promises something like that, so home run I think)

T - Great fruity flavors up front, touch of pineapple and sweet malt. Still maintains tripel characteristics, lots of that sour belgian flavor. Very in-between, and definitely a best of both worlds beer.

M - Goes in smooth, but the active carbonation keeps it interesting. thick and refreshing simultaneously, all around enjoyable feel.

O - Great offering by Sam Adams. Not sure if I like it better than 13th Hour, but it is definitely just as unique and interesting

Picked up a bottle from the local liquor store for $9.99

A- Poured into an imperial pilsener glass, golden orange in color, with a considerable amount of frothy head. Good retention and some nice lacing.

S- A sweet malty aroma with fruit coming forward. Reminds me of a white wine.

T- Sweet flavor, very malty with grapefruit and banana taste. A little bit of warmth coming from the 10% ABV, but overall it is pretty well covered. No real hop presence.

M- Medium bodied beer with quite a bit of carbonation. This beer is smooth and easy drinking, the ABV can definitely sneak up on you.

O- A good beer for the style. In my opinion, a little bit pricey for what you get. I think there are better tripels out there for a better price. A tasty brew, but I won't necessarily seek it out.

Pours a hazy golden color with a fluffy white 2 finger head that leave a wonderful sticky lacing.

The aroma is spicy banana, cloves, tropical fruits, citrus, sweet malts, bubblegum, and just a hint of oak... I love the earthy and rich scent this emits... smells so luxurious!

The taste follows the nose.... peppery spice sweetness, tropical citrus (mango, pineapples, banana), sweet and complex! The oak is very subdued however, but this is such a delicious offering form Sam Adams that i am very impressed with how well this is crafted. And the alcohol is very well hidden.... I was amazed that I was able to buy this for $4.49!!! I am definitely going to get some more of these to enjoy ;-)

Poured into a snifter out of a 750ml bottle.

Pours a fairly hazy dark gold with a fluffy white head. Outstanding head retention and good lacing to boot. Looks like a well crafted Tripel.

Tons of fruity Belgian yeasty goodness. Clove is huge with underlying banana, mango, and other tropical fruits. Almost an overripe citrus note. I'm not detecting the slightest bit of oak but rather just the aroma of a great Tripel.

The flavor is not quite as impressive as the aroma but still packs a decent punch. Banana and clove are prominent while the other fruit characters take a back seat. Again no oak. A little bit of alcohol comes through and some sweetness which is a little out of place for the style. The mouthfeel is a little on the heavy side and I don't care for the sticky finish. A quick breath of alcohol to finish it out.

Overall, a decent Tripel for the price cosidering I got it for $6.49 on sale. Not quite as good as its Belgian-made counterparts but it stands up well.

Been letting this beer sit for a little while and what better occasion than the Super Bowl to crack it open.

A. Pours murky golden wheat hues with lots of head that even after sitting for a few minutes does not dissipate.

S. this beer has an amazing aroma. After warming up a bit, the cloves and pepper really comes through with candied banana, mango and pineapple flooding the nose. A true triumph.

T. The taste of this beer does not match the aroma. It tastes a little thin with low levels of carbonation. What you smell is what you taste, but just doesn't shine through to high levels.

M. Thin and lightly carbonated, but still pleasurable.

O. I really enjoyed this beer and it was great to start off the Super Bowl beer line-up

Corked bottle, at least a year old...poured in a chalice.
Super tight cork gives a big pop.
Orange gold color...pours a big head that dissipates quickly leaving a small layer of bubbles with lace forming quickly.
Aroma of spearmint, alcohol, orange zest.
Significant carbonation and mouthfeel.
Flavors of bubble gum, candy sugar, mineral water, Kentucky liquor, clove, mint. Reminds me of getting some shot of something in some long ago pub crawl...uh....let me give this 5 minutes...
Aahhh...after five plus minutes some of the alcohol has gone from the nose leaving sweet amber malt, a touch of grass, slight funky fruit rind, mango, honey, rosemary, sage. More quaffable. To be honest I bought a case slightly over a year ago and have been drinking through them periodically since...this is sadly the last bottle. On the other hand, I'm not sure much more aging would help. It was damn good fresh!
Along with St Bernardus, Triple Karmeliet, New Belgium, La Rulles, Bink and others, I find this a very tasty tripel. Oak barrel aging adds some complexity, but I sometimes find the oak overwhelms, competes with, or masks desirable flavors.
20 + minutes in and there's still a thin head, mellowed out aroma of light citrus fruit and crusty bread, and flavors of melons and candy sugar. There's been a bitter sweet bite throughout, black pepper notes, and a very full body. I love tripels and this one is strange with the oak, one might even say it's off, but honestly, I'll buy it again...but I'll buy it fresh.
2013 - Mar 13 - Orange gold color, small head, aroma and flavors of bubblegum, orange zest, sweet malts, slight alcohol. Flavors are similar to what I reported before, with more carbonation, sweetness, herbs, and funky fruit rind. Darn tasty but still not in my top 5 tripels.

Pours a pure golden orange and is topped with a dense, majestic off-white head that seems to deem diminution as defeat. A sweet malty aroma is followed by allspice, a bit of earthy funk, an array of light fruits (green apples, oranges, pears) and taffy. Tastes sweet and fruity with an oaken edge toward the end. Subsequent draws from the glass reveal a low chalkiness and a bitter denouement. A creamy middle with dry edges results in a smooth but interesting mouth-feel. The alcohol is blended to the point of near invisibility. At one point the Tripel was one of my favorite styles, and this one quickly propels it back to that position. For the time being anyway.

Bomber, poured into a tulip; Bottle #13xx (can't quite make out the last two numbers, possibly 1300, but this is from the first release)

A murky, golden body with a fluffy white cap. The cap rose and fell somewhat quickly and left a thin collar around the edges. Some delicate lace inside the glass.

The nose is of earthy funk and must, with some damp hay, floral hops, lemons, pears, and some white pepper. A pretty mellow aroma with the funkyness being most prominent.

On the palate, a soft, herbal/earthy funk hits first with damp hay and fruit through the middle. Pears, lemons, and green apples. Floral hops and white pepper poke through in the finish along with some earthy, wet hay funk.

Smooth feel, light. The carb has fallen off on this, but that is ok, it works.

The age did this guy well. Wet, damp funk is prevalent and very welcome. Soft tripel notes throughout. I am going to have to seek out a fresh bottle for comparison's sake.

*Poured into a tulip.

Suprisingly I found this at a local local store that doesn't sell much of any good beers. for $8.99 I wasn't expecting a bad product from Samuel Adams.

A- golden body with plenty of carbonation. Tall, foamy head stuck around until the end.

S- Citrus notes with some hoppy aroma. Some earthyness but the citrus quickly takes over.

T- Similar to the nose. Alcohol is barely present. A bit of hops in the finish, but sweet for the most part. Also, there are plenty of spices to even things out.

M- full bodied. Leaves an oily feeling in the palate. Medium carbonation.

A nice trippel from Samuel Adams. Not quiet a true Trappist trippel but its touching the surface. A little overpriced, but life is too short to drink cheap beer.

Pours hay color in body with large white head that stays around. Aroma of candy sugar, booze, honey, clove, mango. Tastes of honey, candy sugar, little clove, light tropical fruit reminiscent of kiwi and banana, some vanilla sneaks in toward the finish. Light in body with high carbonation. A: very clear golden orange color poured with about 2 if gets of bright white head that went away fairly quick with some lacing on the glass lots of carbonation steaming to the top of the glass

S: has a real funk to the smell the yeast character which had a very clove and banana smell overpowered a lot of the other elements couldn't really get too much other than the yeast

T: got a lot of banana and clove again on the taste little but of a yeast bite vet sweet tasting some of the Pilsen malt was detectable in the taste as well

M:very dry mouthfeel lots of carbonation overall

O: this was a good example of a triple not the best and not the worst I wild prefer soemething more along the lines of allagash tripel but overall a good effort
