This beer is not 100% retired, actually. Served on tap at the 2007 Sam Adams Beer Summit Oktoberfest in pint glass tankard.

Appearance is cloudy straw colored.

Aroma is very juicyfruity, clearly not the same yeast as some of their other wheat beers.

Flavor is bland, no defects, but nothing special.

Mouthfeel is balanced between bitterness and silky feel.

Overall not a bad summer quencher.

I review this beer nearly four years after I first had it. I remember it fairly well, though, as it was my first weiss experience, and the first Sam Adams I thoroughly enjoyed.

Basically, this is a great session beer which is just one more on the list of surprisingly tasty beverages which were discontinued...

Aroma: A light fruity apricot/apple/grape melody that together comes across as a white wine aroma with accompanying slight sour smell.
Appearance: Hazy dark yellow (as it should be for style) with a thin white cover that left dots of lace.
Flavor: Buttery with slight wheat notes. No banana flavor noted
Mouthfeel: Medium body with good carbonation
Overall Impression: Sampled this in the middle of an extended tasting session and it just didn’t stand out. The buttery taste seemed to be an off flavor and the sour wasn’t sharp enough to be a focal point like a Berliner Weisse. Like a lot of Sam Adams beers, pretty good mild example of a style. Thanks to Pegasus for the sample.

This may have been the first legal beer I ever had (and thus the first hefeweizen).

Poured a hazy, yeast-filled golden blonde with a nice white head. Aroma is banana, and clove. Fairly crisp mouthfeel. More crisp than your typical German weizen. Malty taste with the token banana and clove hefe flavor. Seems to me that it is both a little too sweet in the malts and too bitter in the hops.

Still a great brew. If I'm in the mood for a hefe and there are no better Germans available, I'll go for this.

Pours a cloudy orange/golden color with no head. No head on a wheat beer? I tried and tried, but no luck. Smells grainy, with some citrus and banana notes. Taste is sweet and tart, slightly spicy in the form of cloves, along with a sour "off" taste. Very rough, some flavors are fighting each other. Light body with some carbonation, but needed to be more carbonation. Overall, not as bad as this may sound, but not up to par. Freshness may have been an issue here, I will certainly look for another sample and re-review if necessary. I haven't typically seen problems like this in any SA product.

Nice cloudy apricot color, with a small head. Nose of wheat, bananas, and spicey cloves. Good carbonation in a medium body, wheat and yeast hitting the palate, spice it slides down, clean and smooth, finishing with mellow fruit. An interesting American version of the style, and good enough to stand on its own.

I really like this beer but it is not what I expected it to be. The appearance is a very light cloudy yellow. The smell is not overpowering. You can definitely smell something citrusy. You can taste it too. It is the first thing that you really notice when tasting it. The taste can best be described a nicely carbonated beer with obvious hint of lemon. It is good but may not be what most of the people that try this beer will be looking for and in fact, I could see many people being disappointed by it. Personally I liked it and its a great buy on a summer day that you can find almost anywhere. Its a good quick solution to finding a nice beer for the summer instead of taking a drive to find one of your favorites.

Pours out to a cloudy dark golden, honey-colored brew, forming a large whipped head with exceptional retention and good lacing. Aroma is brisk...at first the aroma of bananas, followed by pale malt, bubbles-gum esters, and then an obtrusive metallic odor. Slight hoppiness and sparse cloves are noted. Carbonation is medium-strong. Taste begins with a bit of lemon zest, a touch of musty grain sack, medium malt body, copper and zinc, and an odd touch of amber malts towards the moderately astringent finish. Medium in body with a rather ruddy mouthfeel and finishing in lemon zest, pennies, and dirty leather.

Rather weak for the style and unimpressive. It has a few redeeming qualities but the metallic note and off tastes kill it. Semi-enjoyable if you don't pay attention to it. Definitely better American bavarian style wheats out there.

I was initially caught off guard by the appearance of this beer.
The carbonation, color, and head all look extremely convincing.
Alas, for the true weiss aficianado, this beer is an imposter at best.
Don't get me wrong though, as an American wheat beer, it is quite drinkable. I find it a much closer attempt than Redhook's offering.Dry husky malt flavor with background sweetness. The carbonation is it's best feature, nice small bubbles.The aroma is of raw wheat. It has a nice light-yet-full body as well. In the end, I just kept searching for the old familiar german weiss-smile that always comes out in me and it never showed up.

Appearance/Head: Golden color. Light haze. Some head, which faded fast. A Hefe-Weizen should really have a better head.

Aroma: Wheat malt. Lemon. Some banana/clove but light for the style.

Taste: Grainy, malty, herbal flavors. The aftertaste has too much sour and citrus flavors. It is almost like they added a lemon for me. It lacks the true banana/clove flavors of the style.

Bottom line: Pretty weak Weiss. It joins many other Samuel Adam brews by being drinkable interpretions of the style, without being memorable or classic.

Samuel Adams Weiss Bier is a pretty good respresentation of a German Hefeweizen, certainly moreso than say, the Michelob Hefe which had almost no hefe qualities to it whatsoever. This has all the elements of a basic hefe which make it a good one to start off with if getting into the style.

Weiss Bier pours a somewhat cloudy light yellowish-gold color that was a little more clear than I thought it would be. Adding the yeast sediment helped add a more desired amount of cloudiness. A decent 2 finger foam forms and lasts for about a minute and a half, then thins out. The smell is typical of wheat beers: a musty-wheaty smell with some spiciness. The mouthfeel is smooth and lightly carbonated, perhaps a little thin. Taste has only a little bit of crisp malt, flavor is mostly of banana-esters and clove-like spiciness. Smooth tasting. Moderate hop bitterness, slightly dry. Definitely easy to drink. Aftertaste has some continuing spicy notes, but is pretty clean. Maybe some wheaty twang there too. This finishes out with only a little bit of alcoholic warmth.

This is a good hot summer day drink. Adding the yeast enhances the flavors a little bit, and the appearance is definitely helped. Not a bad beer at all.

I originally sampled this beer on 8 May 2002. I am writing this review from my notes.
Appearance: It's a cloudy yellow brew, no surprise here.
I really enjoyed this beer. It's a very crisp & tangy wheat beer. It's much better than I would have expected from Sam Adams. Good Job.

A slightly cloudy pale yellow straw colored brew with a tiny little white head on top. A big blast of bananas in the nose. I also got a nice blend of citrus aromas and some graininess.

A very crisp brew with a pretty light body. The flavor is all there with a yeasty banana character leading the way citrus and lemons balance. It is pretty well put together for the style. It is not the best, but it is a very solid brew, and I could definitely sit back with a few especially on a hot summer day.

Appearance: Cloudy golden with slightly more carbonation than expected. Creamy, sticky white head that retained and laced nicely.

Smell: Clove and bananas, with a husky wheat backbone. Nice smell, on par with some of the better German versions.

Taste: Slightly watery and thin, but still a decent version. More husky wheat flavor, almost too much, if a wheat can ever be too "wheaty." Surprisingly dry hop finish.

Notes: Good but not great. Dryer and less fruity than many American weissbiers. Worth a shot if you're a fan of the style.

pours out a cloudy, dirty rusted colour. a fairly big and foamy head reduces quickly and leaves rings of lace. light aromatic fruit esters lean toward the banana side, with a spicy clove kicker. mouthfeel is thick and creamy, rather full bodied for an americanized bavarian wheat beer. the body of the beer seems to be the best part of it, though, because it lacks in the flavour department. spritzy lemony, banana and spice make for a decent taste profile, but those characterisics definitely are understated. a bit crisp in the finish, making it refreshing and drinkable.

so, in review....questionable looks, great body, but no brains......hmmmm....so i took it home...tried it out...appreciated the good parts but i don't really want to see it again. but if i was offered it again for free with no strings attached....you betcha.

Pours a creamy, pale, cloudy golden color with a thick soapy head, decent retention. Some wheaty malty and spicy aroma, rather pleasant. Smooth off the top, taste of sweet malt, somewhat spicy, thin taste of clove, slightly yeasty towards the finish and a tinge creamy too be expected. A good stab at the style by BBC, and overall a great hefe.

I've been a faithful Sam Adams customer for many years, and was excited when I spotted a new style on the shelf. I quickly purchased a six of Weiss Bier, and hurried home to sample this new offering.

Bananas. If I could write a one word review of this beer that would be it. This, combined with a bit too much carbonation for my tastes, rendered this brew nearly undrinkable. I didn't let that stop me, however I found it difficult getting through the six-pack, and was glad when it was over. To be fair, wheats aren't one of my favorite styles, but this was still sub par for the style. Too much bananas, too much carbonation and just plain bland.

Big disappointment from Sam Adams.

A nice translucent yellow-orange color, cloudy with the fine powdery sediment of the bottle dregs. Spicy sweet, lightly yeasty aroma. I got no head on the pour, I wasn't really trying to force the issue, but probably whatever I would have done wouldn't have made a difference 2 minutes later.

It has a light, sweet, and crisp taste, hints of apple and/or almond, I can't decide. Decidedly a great selection for pork, sauerkraut, anything German where you don't want the flavor getting drowned out by the beer, but rather complemented by it. A super summer beer, great for deck-sitting and tiki torches.

AIBA 2003: Not too bad, but like a lot of things from sam Adams, pretty average, or perhaps slightly above average, lightly estery banana and clove flavours, but on the light side for sure. Drinkable, if a bit boring, man that Emersons weissbier i had at the festival sure kicked this ones arse in everyway.

Poured clear and dark honey colored, but I swirled the heck out of the bottle trying to get every last bit of sediment out. I did and the beer went from clear to very opaque. The head started off about 2/3”, but quickly fell to < 1/8” of slightly sticky cream. Sweet wheat malt in the nose along with some banana and something slightly spicy, like white pepper. The first thing I noticed on sipping was a tiny, yet acute sourness. Nothing as bad as what I experienced in a bad Hitachino Nest Weizen. Anyway, the beer was kinda toasty, but it did have definite wheat and yeast flavors. Very medium carbonation kept this beer from being too slick in the mouth. Good, flavorful brew. I probably won’t get this again because there are so many other (better) wizens out there.

This bottle was two months past the notched “Drink by” date on the side of the bottle. I’m attributing the sourness to this. Also, hop contributions and other flavors may have changed over time. I would like to try this fresh, but I’m pretty sure it’s seasonal. Oh, well. I’ll have to wait until next year.

Bland. If I could write this 25 times, I would. I exspect a wheat beer to be fresh and bold. This was neither. It just laid there like a dead fish. Nothing really crisp about it. No great hops or snap to it. Uneventful. Perhaps it sat too long on a shelf, but I doubt it. Not the best product from this brewery.
