When I popped open the bottle, I instantly caught a whif of what seemed to be a chocolate milkshake. It made my mouth water.

The head seems to be travelling down my glass, leaving a lacey remembrance of the opaque, black ale that was once there. Sad and wonderful at the same time.

The taste is two malt feet forward, one hop step back. It's definately not a simple beer by any means. It is not sweet, per se, but there is a suggestion of sweetness that makes the super-charged flavor that much more pleasant. There are certainly notes of cocoa, coffee, caramel, and a bit of a soulful, earth tone coupled with a leathery quality...I could totally see making dinner with this stout and a huge-ass, marinated and grilled portabella mushroom.

Move over, Red Wine! Yes, this would be a great substitute and/or cross over drink for a hefty, upfront red wine. If you like deep, dark Cabernets, this might be for you.

Sam Adams does not miss with this one.
