tweaked recipe so a new listing
A-tan head that quickly disapates
S-sweet bourbon. Very sweet and inviting
T-follows the nose. Sweet bourbon that mellows very we'll with the body. Not overpowering
M-medium body and smooth. Crazy drinkable
O-I blind shared this at a recent tasting. Multiple people thought it was black note. That's some high praise I don't know that I can argue with

A: Pours heavy, black, and thick. No real head. Like motor oil.
S: Sweet. Vanilla and oak are right up front with the bourbon. Strong. You know before it ever touches your tongue this is going to pack a bit of a punch.
T: Good stout flavors. Some roastiness, a little chocolate. Bourbon very apparent. Not too bitter, but a bit dry.
M: Definitely heavy. Thick more than chewy. Low carbonation.
O: I enjoyed this. I thought the bourbon qualities were a bit on the overpowering side. Not sure if this masked some complexity or hid the fact that it lacked it. It definitely warmed me up but wasn't too hot, so great for the season. Did like the bourbon tinged after taste. Glad I got to try this.

Much thanks go to my friend Richard for bringing me a taste of Cincinnati!!
A: Pours a chocolate brown color, in the glass it is black. Somewhat low amount of head, but what is there is coffee and cream colored with some fish eyes.
S: Very sweet, with a huge hit of Bourbon, vanilla, oak, and a hint of maple syrup. Smells thick, and perhaps a touch nutty, with chocolate overtones.
T: Tons of bourbon and oak in there. Starts sweet with maple syrup, followed by vanilla, oak, and possibly a little bit of tobacco. Brown sugar, chocolate, licorice, and bourbon come up in the finish. Not boozy, but a little bit of alcohol is present in the finish.
M: Medium thick in body, there is a nice silky mouthfeel, not necessarily creamy but very smooth. The carbonation is low, perhaps a touch too low, but maybe that is part of what I like about the feel.
O: Overall very nice.. I wish there was a little more richness to the stout flavor, I think it is being blown out a little by the bourbon, that being said it certainly a mouthfull of excellent flavor.

A - Poured with a thick, but quickly dissipating deep brown head which quickly settled into nothing. Lots of bubbles.
S - Bourbon, heat, vanilla.
T - Deep bourbon flavor, oak, a bit of sweetness.
M - A bit too lively with carbonation for the style imo. Nice body, though.
All in all, it's very tasty, but could still use some time to age out the bourbon. Would really like to see less carbonation in this one.

12 ounce wax dipped bottle, 2011 vintage. Bottle #1908 of 2324. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown with a 1/4 inch tan head that doesn't stick around for long. There's a decent amount of lacing left on the glass. Aroma is roasted malt, vanilla, chocolate and some bourbon. Taste is just like the aroma, it's all roasted malt, vanilla, chocolate and bourbon. This is a sweeter tasting brew, and as far as bourbon barrel aged beers go, this one isn't very strong with the bourbon. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit slick and coating and it goes down easy enough. Moderate carbonation. It's a decent enough brew overall, but I wouldn't pay $6.99 a bottle for this again. With that being said, I do think it's a beer that's worth trying if you've never had it or anything else from Listermann before.

Pours a deep brown color with a light filmy short tan head that holds as a topper for a few seconds.
Lots of fruity aromas at the forefront than followed by an almost sour aroma. Wood and bourbon show through nicely with some vanilla thrown in. Some chocolate aromas surface as well.
Nice flavors with much bourbon character. If not for being a little light in body and weight this could be truly superb. Layered black fruits and dark cherry, vanilla, burnt sugar, caramel, toasted oak, chocolate syrup think hersheys. Some alcohol bite in the middle and in the chest on the finish. Long and lingering finish. Again very nice except for the thin body.

First of all, if you do not like bourbon, then go away. If all of your bourbon-barrel aged stouts must contain massive amounts of coffee and chocolate to smooth out the flavors and take away the bourbon bite, then this beer is not for you. If you are unfamiliar with the mantra of the bourbon drinker (``first ya swaller, then ya hollar''), then you are barking up the wrong tree. Go back to your KBS and CBS. Those are outstanding beers (if you can get them). However, if you DO like bourbon and DO NOT mind if your beer has some bite, then come with me...
Hand numbered wax-dipped bottle (1128/2324) poured into a Brooklyn snifter. The beer is dark mahogany (not black) and pours with (sadly) low viscosity and little carbonation (as expected from a barrel-aged brew). The nose has LOTS of bourbon and oak. I mean this beer smells like Bubba Buck when he comes back from his still hidden up yonder in them thar hills. There's no doubt whatsoever where THIS beer has been. Not getting many roasty notes like coffee, but I do get a small faint touch of chocolate.
Full-bodied beer with wonderful flavor, but the mouthfeel is a little thin. In the front of the palate I get a quick cola-like taste, then nice semi-sweet vanilla, oak, and bourbon flavors. The beer is not boozy at all, but does have a warming finish with flavors that mesh together nicely. The finish is like a liquor-filled chocolate. Mouthfeel notwithstanding, the beer is dangerously drinkable and tastes DAMN GOOD. Listermann should be really, really proud of this beer.
If this beer felt creamier in the mouth, it would be an absolute world-class beer. If it was thicker and darker and poured more like Quaker State, BAs would be jumping out of their skins seeking this stuff out and trading away their first-borns for a bottle. If it had more of a big, roasty, malt presence, BAs would be driving hundreds of miles to the Queen City to buy it and nimrods would be selling it on ebay for $40 a bottle. As it is, this beer falls just shy of being top-shelf. It has the flavor, it just lacks the ``oomph'' to make it to that top tier. As far as taste goes, I'd put it slightly above Weyerbacher Heresy (I love Heresy, but this one has just a bit more intensity in the flavor). Since this beer is quite easy for me to get, I will stockpile a few bottles to share with other BAs in future trades (as long as they really, really like bourbon). I will definitely buy this beer every year. Mark my words: if it improves even a little bit from year-to-year, it won't be long before this will be a highly-anticipated release. I just wish it wasn't quite so expensive.

Appearance - pours nice and dark, holding up to light shows a fuzzy burgundy color. Thin head formation of light mocha, fades quick but holds a strong collar well.
Aroma - very bourbon-forward, backing notes of cocoa powder and oak, even some caramel going on. Estery alcohol vapors inhibit any pickup of malt presence but a good sniff besides.
Taste - some brief roasted malts, some chocolate flavor alongside. Covered quickly by the bourbon, major abv heat. This is all whiskey and little beer. Tasty but not very balanced. Ends very warm and boozy. The malts do smooth out the flavors and give them a heavier, sweeter profile.
Mouthfeel - medium feel, pretty smooth. Carbonation is frisky but not excessive.
Drinkability - this tastes like a beer you think will age and mellow, but never does. The heat reminds me of early Avery Beast, just very spicy on the alcohol. At $7.29 a bottle, I passed on the opportunity to buy some to age. Worth a try and tasty if you enjoy bourbon. Nicely done, LBC.

From 12oz silver wax dipped bottle to Bruges hybrid glass on 3/19/12
*From notes
-- Bottle 117 of 2324 --
A: Ehh, it looks ok I guess. More mud brown the black. When I give it a firm pour, I get a meager and thin .5 finger head. It doesn't stick long, and fades to a disappointing collar.
S: Easily the highlight of the beer. Oozing with liquid dark chocolate and bourbon. All the ADIS bases are covered: cocnut, toasted vanilla bean, cool whiskey, cigar tobacco and dark vine fruit.
T: Brownie batter and a bit sweet up front. As it moves back, it becomes apparent that this beer isn't what you'd call complex or unique. It's heavy-handed, with astringent alcohol hitting on the mid and never really wearing off. When warmer, a decent amount of vanilla smothers the taste buds, helping curb what otherwise is a sloppy flavor profile.
M: Massively disappointing. Tell me this doesn't drink like a homebrewed Brown Ale brewed by a first timer. Way overcarbed and extremely thin. If this thing had more oomph, it would push the flavors to the next level. I really do accredit the flaws of this beer to it's mouthfeel.
O: (Que sighing and rolling of eyes) Another ADIS that just doesn't work. I'm getting the feeling that most every brewery out there assumes that just because it's been in a spirit barrel and has a wax dipped cap makes it special. Lemme tell you all a secret: it doesn't.
Don't go out of your way for this one, though to be totally honest, I wouldn't turn up my nose if served one at a friends house or a decent watering hole.
Forgettable and uninspired.

A: black, opaque. Slight cocoa ring around the edge of the glass. Little to no head to speak of.
S: wow! Oak soaked booze and lots of it. Not a lot of the roasted malt and chocolate you expect from most stouts. Perhaps its out of balance, but the pleasant aroma makes up for that.
T: simply, brilliant. The oak and bourbon really come through not just at the front, but remain a constant on the palette. As it warms, the booze subdues just a bit and some hints of roasted malt and coffee notes peek through.
M: medium to full bodied. Velvety smooth viscosity that really coats the tongue. A slighty dry and boozy finish.
O: really enjoyed this brew. A bit expensive at $7 per bottle, but you can really taste the effort put into this. A sipper to be sure, probably best to be had on a cold night. The booze will warm you up, the flavor will keep your attention and the 10% abv will have you loving life.

With a seriously booze component, the influence of Bourbon barrels are undeniable in this- Listermann Brewing Company's Cincinnatus Stout.
This inky Stout pours with a slower and more viscous decantment that sing the praises of heavy malt, richness, and robustness even to the eye. The onyx-like sheen conveys the notion of clarity although the sheer darkness prevents any light from penetrating. A dainty sandy colored espresso-like creme builds on the beer and slowly retracts to a skim sheet on the beer's surface and glass. It's obvious that the barrel and bourbon has limited the head character here, so a forgiveness Barleywines and Old Ales are needed here.
The strong aroma of alcohol- bourbon, brandy, and rum all play a part in the nose, even if bourbon is the only actual injection. But savory throughout, the well-melded scent of roasted grains, cocoa, burnt molasses, licorice, grape, black currant, and sherry all play apart in the varying aromas that continue to open up as the beer warms and with each visit of the nose to the glass.
Delicious and powerful flavors play out in a struggle that make me want to sip frequently but frustrating because the power of taste suggests otherwise. Stongly alcohol flavored with the barrel contributions of aged wood, caramel, vanilla, coconut, and oaky tannin- these are the perfect accessories to the underpinning of lightly scorched molasses, espresso roast coffees, bittersweet chocolates, and nondescript malt. Estery and other fruity alcohol notes strongly resemble cherries, berries, currants, licorice, grape, and rich vinous wines of sherry and port. Where the balance of the beer heavily favors alcohol and roast, the offset to sweetness and savoryness lies in the coffeeish roast that most resemble burnt embers and woody hops.
Surely full bodied, but not with the heavy viscous texture that we saw in the pour, nor with the extreme complexity found in taste. The initial low-lying carbonation prevents the full explosion of effervescent creaminess in the mouth and allow the beer to coat the mouth with a light and velvety feel in comparison to its aesthetics and taste. Still, the beer provides a strong alcohol warmth and slight numbing feel to the tongue and throat as the beer develops from mid palate on. Semi-dry in finish, the beer retains a savory malty and tawny feel that extends into aftertaste to accompany the roasty, bourbony, fruity linger.
The barred influence is very strong with Listermann's cincinnatus as the beer's tannin properties deliver a near powdery feel along with the plethora of taste that's already discussed. It's a desert, digestive, cordial, and company all in one glass. Great job Dan Listermann, you've made one stellar Stout!
