A nice bottle with Japanese writing on the label, a nice red color, decent head that faded quickly. No lacing. An odd aroma, perhaps an unusual hop, I couldn't place it but didnt really care for it. Tastes pretty good. Very malty, some hops at the nose/front, but none later. Decent carbonation keeps the malts from lingering in the mouth, but there is something in the aftertaste that would keep me from drinking this very often

ST: 12oz poured into a pint glass.

A: As to be expected it is a nice amber color. In the dark it looks dark red. It has a nice fluffy head and it is clear.

S: Malt, honey, bubble gum, and citrus from hops.

T: Citrus and pine with slight spice. The beer is very bitter, but more malt is present as the beer warms.

M: Medium and dry.

O: This amber ale has a fair amount of hops. It is actually very bitter until it warms. Once it does warm the beer is much more balanced with some malt; though, it still has pleasant bitterness.

The label caught my eye so I figured I'd give it a try.

Pours a decent 1 finger fizzy head over slightly hazy peach orange honey colored beer.

Nose is decent, a nice light amber malt aroma, something else that seems like it's cutting it too like a rice or something, light sweet malts, light aromatic hops.

Taste starts with some toasty malts, sweet amber malts, light crystal, fairly toasty, some grassy and mild spicy hops starts to come through with a bit of bitterness and slight mineral like flavor which starts to become astringent, a bit creamy malts too. Finishes a bit lighter, bit drier, light lingering malt sweet flavors and hops.

Mouth is a bit lighter bodied, but typical, and decent carbonation.

Overall it's OK, nothing special, sessionable except for the light astringent flavor it starts to get, malts are decent.

I must admit this beer appealed to me by the label was supprised however on a number of levels my brother picked up this beer for st patricks day (a red american style amber ale brewed by Ezo for the rougue label). I must admit the irony in that most foxes have a tail that would be called a brush, I'd call the head on this beer the brush and it had a heck of a fuzzy head. Smell was sort of sweet nothing earth shaking, taste was what really let me down, it was a bitter taste nothing more nothing less, not a hoppy taste with vague hints of the usual amber taste in the finish, a bitter malt taste, it wasn't offensive, just average I have to describe it as average. Its pretty smooth and easy to drink down. I'd say mostly this beer is ok overall not anything exceptional though appearance asside.

This bottle was filled near the top. It slowly started to overflow, but I had enough time to pour it into the glass. Starts with a moderate head that settles to a single layer of bubbles. Some spotty lace. The color is closer to light brown than amber. Hard to tell, but it appears to have a light haze.

Strong caramel aroma. Lightly sweet. No notable hop smell.

There's gummi bear quality to the taste. It is mildly sweet, but not from what I expect in malt sugar. The brew gets dryer as the taste gets to the finish where a touch of bittering hop shows up. Pretty good complexity. Rich bodied with a decent level of carbonation.

Second beer I've tried of this Japan/Rogue collaboration. I've liked both of them. In a pint glass this beer was a hazy red/orange color with a medium tan head. A bit of lacing. It had a sweet malt/caramel aroma, somewhat floral. Caramel taste, pine that lingered. Kind of tangy mouthfeel. Very nice.

Cider colored with a thin orangey-beige head that doesn't rise up too high and settles out quickly.

Aroma of bready malt and ripe fruits, hint of cinnamon.

Flavor of toasted cracker malt, some citrus and pine bitters, plus a harsh astringent burnt grass flavor that cuts a path through the tongue. Some metal and american macro adjunct notes. Orange rind pith bitters linger.

Thin mouthfeel, a little slick, but finishes tingly. Average drinkability, not too smooth.

I had this beer while traveling in Japan so I had only been drinking Japanese lager at the time. This was a world of difference in taste.

It is Rouge's Dead Guy so if you have had that you know what you are getting into.

The beer is a nice amber ale, medium color and body. The hop flavors come through in both the smell and the taste but are no where near as powerful as a pale ale. They compliment the beer nicely.

The beer is smooth and very easy to drink. Just slightly bitter and a medium body to remind you you are drinking a beer with character and flavor and not just a light lager. All in all a great beer to sit around and have a few while staying warm.

i bought this at Canal's in Mt. Holly, NJ of all places. I love Rogue's American Amber Ale and I like japanese handwriting, so this one certainly caught my eye.

Pours a nice deep red color with a solid two finger head. I love the smells in this one. Cascade hops are very present, with nice hints of malts for balancing. The smell reflects the flavor-- the perfect balance of hops and malt. This would go great with some BBQ (maybe asian BBQ just to fit the theme haha).

Summary: Rogue's American Amber Ale is by far my favorite amber ale out there. It's not too hoppy or "thick", making it a great session beer. There is no difference between this Japanese version and the American Amber. I just happened to dig the packaging and thought it was worth the buy. Highly Recommended.

Nice pour. Deep, dark red with a very nice head.

Smells very rich. Lots of red ale earth and rustiness with some solid, very American hops. Pretty much a standard red ale, actually, but since I like red ales a lot that's a good thing.

Tastes pretty much like it smells only with a more pronounced, Rougey yeastiness to it. Heavy red ale malts, heavier west coast American hops, big finish of Pac Man yeast. This is a*much* closer approximation of its American counterpart than does the White Crane, which tastes absolutely nothing like American Oregon Golden. This is still a little different from the American Amber, but it's close.

picked this up from siciliano's in grand rapids, mi - never knew that rogue exported as such, and i enjoyed the packaging - to be honest, i haven't tried an awful lot of rogue brews so i can't accurately compare this to the official american version, but hey here goes.

poured from 12oz bottle to standard pint glass - bottle was extremely carbonated, maybe from my own agitation, but i'd like to think the bottle was off a bit age wise. Opening was a challenge, as it foamed everywhere.

poured a creamy red-ish amber dissipating into a foam island.. weird

smells of extreme dry hopping, this is totally an american style amber for sure - heavy pale ale ++

tastes of a dry hop explosion, bitter, metallic / diactaly / like its out of date, flavors of apples and celery

all in all a bitter mouthfeel, but heavy with a thicker consistency and the hop bite was nice.

now i need to try the american amber to get an idea where this was coming from :D

12oz bottle into nonic.

Slightly hazy reddish amber hue with a tan three finger frothy head that slowly settles to a pillowy cap, leaving strong lacing along the glass.

Light roasty malts with some flowery hop aromas.

The malts have a slightly roasted flavor, along with a bit of caramel. The malts are sweet, contrasting the bitter hops. Full bodied with a good amount of carbonation. The finish is the lingering hops.

This Amber/Red ale is certainly American, as it has some biting hops in the main light, rather than some lightly toasted grains. The great thing about this beer is its relatively low (for an American style) so it's great for sessioning. Recommended.

12 oz. bottle with Japanese writing:

Pours dark amber/copper with a thick off-white head that descends, leaving broken rings of lacing.

The smell is of toast, caramel and citric fruitiness. Rogue's Pac-man yeast aroma is in the background.

The taste is of citric fruitiness with a caramel backing. It has a dry, bitter finish.

Medium-bodied, the bitterness lingers despite a largely malty character.

This is an amber ale with a prominent bitterness. I liked it.

Pours a dark amber color, nice carbonation, nice one-finger plus creamy tan head, leaves some nice sticky lacing. The nose is big time malts, and caramel. The taste is bitter, very malty, and lots of caramel. The finish is slightly dry and bitter. Medium body. Drinkable, this is a pretty tasty brew, recommended.

Copped a single, 12 oz bottle from Oak Tree in South Plainfield... a majority of this bottle is written in Japanese, although "Red Fox Amber Ale" and the "Rogue" logo is clearly written in English... an absolutely totally impressive appearance with a full, five-finger head huge and dominating over a dark-copper, mahogany hue... great staying power that just seemed to linger on... great amber, hop, pine aroma which burst-through... very good smell with an equally great taste that included honey, caramel, vanilla, esters, and sugar flavors behind a wonderful combination of bitter-sweet, rich, creamy, and thick flavors... an amazing brew... recommended for sure, with a terffic mouthfeel and ultra-easy drinkability... goes down like water without any trace of alcohol or cloying bitterness... a definite winner... Certainly recommended...
