A - Pours a clear amber with a thick off-white head. A few small bubbles of carbonation are visible. All in order here, nice start.

S - Light hop spiciness, floral note, caramel, fruit esters. Pretty good.

T - There is some breadiness and caramel at the start. Green apple pokes forward in the middle. The finish there are flavours of hay, fruit esters and clean grassy hops. A pleasingly dry aftertaste lingers and only now does some of the warmth of the ABV show in the mouth.

M - Prickly carbonation keeps the mouthfeel on the lighter side of medium. My preference was to soften this down somewhat by agitating the beer.

D - An interesting brew. Belgian Tripel with big elements of English Bitter. Not a classic, but worth a try.

330ml bottle served in a chalice glass.

A: Pours a hazy copper color forming a medium thin bubbled creamy beige head with excellent retention and lots of spotty lacings left. A small layers remains forever on the top

S: Very fruity with strong notes of grapes. A bit acid which reminds a bit a Flemish Red Ale. Candy sugar and Belgium earthy-bready yeasts. Alcohol

T: Slightly sweet upfront. Again, very fruity with strong notes of grapes. Candy sugar, caramel. caramel malts. A bit metallic. End is mild bitter. Pleasant

M: Medium to heavy body. Medium to low carbonation. Bittersweet aftertaste. Malty fruity with a nice hoppy sting

O: Good drinkability. Not the best from Struise but still an very enjoyable beer

Beer is a deep ruby-brown with a frothy, resilient head and healthy lacing. The nose, I guess not surprisingly, has that tart lactic aroma of a flanders red! Some sweet caramel apple in the aroma as well. Smooth caramel and an effervescent snap make this balanced and palatable. Unusual but good.

I've been wanting to try this for a while. Bottle from State Line. Best by August 2016

A clear copper with a dense, off-white head with excellent retention and gorgeous lacing, this looks great. While a little darker than a tripel should be, it's OK. The nose is a little disappointing. Very fruity with over-ripe tropical fruit, pears and peaches, this beer is also moderately spicy (allspice) with some dark honey. Quite yeasty as well.

The palate is mildly sweet, moderately spicy, moderately yeasty and a little bitter. Honey and a little biscuit lend a lot of malt flavor (without an excessive sweetness). The mid-palate has flavors of allspice and orange peel (fruitiness and bitterness). Yeasty (a little too much) on the finish, this beer does also feel a little watery. Medium-light in body with medium-high carbonation, this beer feels decent on the body. Decent, but as with most tripels, this beer leaves me wondering why I didn't by the St. Bernardus Tripel instead.

Poured from a 330 ml. bottle into a wine glass as was its younger brother last year. At 8% vs. 6% for the regular Westoek I'm hoping for a bit more. Pours is deep again for the style, golden amber in color and more golden in the light. Offers a light haze and a half inch of near white foam which offers decent retention/lacing.

Nose offers some intriguing yeast notes along with a bit of earthy hops and a light malt backbone. Bit of pear and apple and some earthy and peppery spice though still a touch restrained yet better than the 6% Westoek. Occassional mango or papaya comes to play though remote.

Flavor is spicy and mildly phenolic with a hint of dilute brown sugar in the middle. Finishes with a drying bitterness in direct contrast to the quasi sweet notes. Actually quite dry overall and with a fair grainy character.

Meel is light to moderate though the carbonation does keep through the glass and keeps the 8% in the closet fairly well.

Overall pretty good and an improvement for me over the lighter Westoek. Yeast still plays a lighter than expected role on the aroma but is well matched the the total makeup of the brew. Worth a visit.

Note: Best before Aug. 2016.

Mildly hazy amber-red colour with a smooth, creamy, tan head. Good head retention.

Spicy aroma with some light apple and stone fruit notes. Hints of berry and mint.

Sharp fruit notes with light malt and plenty of apple. Light spicing. Classic Belgian ale.

Medium-light body with moderately-high carbonation. Nice.

Tasty and easy going but lacking a little bit of rounding.

11.2 oz brown bottle into a cervoise. The brew appears a hazed copper color with some orange through the body and more of a clear yellow around the edges. 2.5 fingers worht of frothy tan head appear atop the brew and fade leaving some patches of lacing on the glass.

The smell of this brew first and foremost has a solid mineral inclusion that blends into a bit of herbal hops and grassy to sulfur character. Some hints of hops come forward that are a bit fruity, floral and citrus-like. A light amount of alcohol hints the back end of the nose.

The taste has caramel malt sweetness which develops into a bit of orange pulp flavor. Some herbal hops are present as well as some toasty caramel malt flavors. Mid palate, the brew is a little buttery. A touch of solvent alcohol is noted as well as a bit of sulfur to grassy and herbal hops across the back. The collective combination of toasty grain, bitter herbal hops and solvent alcohol make for a flavor that develops almost into a plastic or burnt rubber flavor mixed with diaper that isn't particularly inviting.

This is a medium bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. The alcohol is decently integrated for 8% but the arrangement of flavors is a bit off and just doesn't jive for me.

Had this on tap at Gourmet Haus Staudt (Redwood City) in a .3L glass..

Pours a dark brown color with a deep reddish brown hue that changes as the glasses becomes more narrow. Lacing is so heavy that it's as if the head sticks to all parts of the glass.

Warm mollasses and maple syrup in the nose, a bit of a roasted almond scent comes out once it reaches room temp.

In the front your first hit is a sweet walnut flavor with stone fruits mixing in with the nuttiness. I'm wondering if there's more, i wait till the brew warms up and it gets even better. The flavors come alive as it warms up, intense hay qualities come out with a nectarine finish.

Carb levels are amazing on this one, just enough to open up the flavors but not so much as to take away from the creaminess.
Great beer, even better when you let sit for a bit.

served in a duvel tulip

pours a dark hazy honey with a creamy head that sits still.

aroma heavy in spice and yeast. some hops in the there as well.

spices hit right away. probably the strongest ive had in a tripel. after your spice od, the candy sugar kicks in followed by malts

finishes pretty dry and just a tad flat.

33cl into a tulip. Pours a fully hazed orange butterscotch, minor eggnog colored head retained nicely, ok lacing.

Aroma is of yeasty candied fruits with a earthy phenolic undertone. Rather simple but pleasant.

Sweet and dry all at once. Flavor exceeds the scent in complexity. Apricot, banana, citrus and spices, just a tad of pepper. Slight metallic note in the aftertaste. Full bodied lively mouthfeel.
