A: Dark red/brown, light head, cloudy, not much retention or lacing.

S: Fruity, lots of hops, refreshing light malt.

T: Good hops, not very complex, some fruity flavors (grapefruit), malt is light and bready. Not as good as many of its competitors, though.

M: Dry, non-astringent, good carbonation, medium body.

D: Goes down pretty easily.

Enjoyed at the Oregon Brewer's Festival 2010

Poured from the bottle into a Dogfish Head Signature glass.

A real nice caramel brown and red body, highlights with some dark chestnut brown around edges. Light tan head makes four fingers and settles slowly with a nice cap, kind of creamy a little fluffy.

Nose is tea like herbal hops and soft brown sugar malt undertones. Quite nice and refreshing.

Palate hits with a good rich body, and density. Tea and sweetened Southern style tea action seems to hit on the palate. Juicy malt profile with a refreshing leafy hop angle. Finish leaves a little bit of caramel tasting malt goodness.

Overall pretty tasty, but the sweetness is a little much. I am also not a big fan of sweetened tea and this beer reminds me of it a bit.

On tap at The Red Hot in Tacoma, WA.

Appearance: Deep red amber with a one finger creamy head.

Smell: Pine hop aromas and a rich malt aroma.

Taste: Big chewy malt, bread, and caramel malt flavor. Finishes with a moderately hoppy pine finish.

Mouthfeel: More full-bodied, creamy, average carbonation.

O: A more malt forward amber/red that is straightforward.

A: Poured a clear crimson color with a nice dirty white cap, good amount of bubbles and lacing

S: Big citrus nose with a little bit of pine

T: Immediate fresh, big citrus followed by a light pine, there is some lightly toasted malt. The finish is dry, a light hop bitterness, booze sting

M: Medium bodied, well carbonated with citrus dominating the palate and mouthfeel

O: Lots of fruity esters. While this beer was a great drink, I thought it woudl have had a little more backbone.

A - Poured out a clear, burgundy color with a one-finger, thick head of tan foam. It left sticky rings of lace on the glass.

S - It smelled very spicy and piney with a toasty presence.

T - This is a great imperial red. Big roasted malt taste with a strong pine and citrus bitterness.

M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A medium bodied beer with a dry finish.

O - This is a really good imperial red ale. Big bold flavors all around.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a clear medium reddish orange amber. One finger fine light tan head with great retention and lacing. Great aroma of pine and citrus hops with light fruit and slight sweet malt. Flavor is very well integrated sweet malt, pine and citrus hops with light fruit juice and citrus. Flavor is subtle at first, but the flavor element reveal themselves in a pleasant way. Citrus and hop finish. Medium bodied with nice creaminess, excellent mouth feel. A very nicely made red ale; glad this rare one made it up to Seattle.

I tasted this over the weekend at a Laurelwood pub house in Battle Ground, WA. I had it on tap, served in a 12 oz. glass.

The color was a dark auburn, with minimal head and virtually no head retention.

The aroma was very nice, very hoppy, and also very fruity. The strongest fruit note I could detect smelled a lot like lychee.

This ale tasted great, very nicely hopped, sweet and floral up front, with a mildly bitter hop finish at the back. Minimal malt flavor, mostly overpowered by the hops. It had mild fruit notes, milder than the aroma, and I couldn't quite put my finger on any specific flavors.

This one has an average mouthfeel, smooth, not very rich, but not thin by any means.

I rated this one fairly high on drinkability, but if you don't like strong hop flavor and high ABV then this one may not be for you. This probably isn't one to pair with any mildly flavored food either. It would go great with a flavorful pizza, or a basket of well-seasoned pub fries, but it somewhat overpowered the taste of the goat cheese stuffed ravioli ratatouille I had with it.

Got a half-pint on tap at Bailey's taproom. Pours a deep amber-red color with a decent-sized creamy white head that leaves some attractive lacing on the glass. Aroma of hops, hops, and more hops - resiny, sticky goodness with a formidable backbone of sweet-smelling caramel malt holding its own as well. A touch of very ripe fruit (peach?) and a touch of pine also make their presence known.
Palate is seriously hoppy up front. Pine resin is the primary note, with the caramel and fruity notes of the malt balancing things out a bit. Grapefruit notes from the hops emerge on the swallow, along with some caramel sweetness. The bitterness of the serious hop content lingers on the finish, yielding a pleasantly sticky reminder of what was recently enjoyed.
Body is full for a red, though not at all chewy. A significant stickiness is the result of the overhopping here, and I for one am enjoying it. I will say that a 10 oz glass was plenty for one evening, but still, this is a damn tasty beer. Well done.

I had this on tap at the Laurelwood Pizza Company. The server warned me that it was only sold in a 12 oz. glass for $4.75. I was OK with that because, hell, that's a lot cheaper than what I pay for stuff in Philly! But I would have liked a pint, two 12 oz. glasses would have been too much... although I do kind of remember her saying that I could only get one glass, so maybe they were trying to ration it out...?

So a "free-range" organic red ale... I'd never had one. It was a dark amber with a reddish-cast beneath a short head of off-white. The retention was good, and it left thin veils of lacing about the glass.

In the nose it expressed a medium caramel maltiness and lots of piney and citrusy hops.

The flavor was also balanced towards hops, but there was just enough malt there that it didn't seem lacking in any way - just balanced towards hops! Piney and grapefruit-like over caramel, it finished with lingering hops as well. A very solid bitterness backed it, but I highly doubt that it was the 100+ IBU's that they touted. It just didn't seem that bitter to me, and I'm guessing that that number was derived from a calculation that gave too much credit to the flavor and aroma hops.

In the mouth it was medium bodied with a dextrinous edge. Starting at 20 Plato, it should have dropped to around 3.6 to achieve its listed 8.6%abv. It was moderately carbonated, and a touch creamy-smooth.

Overall, impressive! I'm not normally a big fan of red ales, but this was almost a west coast red ale-barleywine. Unfortunately, they were already out of bombers or I would have taken a few with me!

Yes boys and girls. On cask (no take out, no growlers and no happy hour discount) at the Laurelwood Pizza location on NE 40th.

The beer pours the expected amber red color with good head retention and lacing. The nose is complex, showing lots of sweet malt, but countered very nicely by the wave of hoppy bitterness. That being said, the nose is not as pronounced on cask as this beer is on CO2. The flavors on the palate, however, are simply mind blowing. This beer is much more sweet and malty on cask, but the tidal wave of hoppy bitterness imparts all kinds of flavor and hoppy goodness. I get sweet malt, baked apple and a hint of cherry, which is then countered and intensified by the hoppy bitterness. There is noticeable pine, pepper, citrus and quinine, all of which marries incredibly well with the sweet malt. In some ways, the cask version of this beer reminds me of a hoppy English ESB (a VERY hoppy ESB), or a somewhat lighter (again think very, very hoppy) English style barleywine (but without all the sweetness). Mouthfeel is very smooth and long, which while interesting, really doesn't work very well with this beer. Also, the sweetness hurts the drinkability just a bit, though this is still a very drinkable, absolutely delicious imperial (hoppy) red amber ale.

If I didn't have the regular Deranger to compare it to, I'm sure I'd find this to be a completely awesome, mind blowing beer. However, instead I find it to be simply a very good, very well made beer... that unfortunately simply cannot hold a candle to the CO2 version of this beer. Nevertheless, there is no denying that this is an excellent beer.

On tap Laurelwood Public House 51st and Sandy 9/16 poured into pub pint glass. $4.75 a pint, no happy hour discount.

One finger faint tan head, quick dissipation with excellent lacing. Dark reddish amber body. The nose is bready malts upfront, but after that the hop bomb is dropped. Taste is bitter, piney hops dominate with some citrusy sweetness (meyer lemon, pineapple). The finish is a bitter hop bomb, but nice balance with malts to even things out. Nicely carbonation with noticeable alcohol heat. At this ABV not sure if multiple pints are in order for the non-designated driver. One of the best IRAs I've had, worth seeking out.

Weird seeing a pic of a bottle... didn't know they bottled it ever...

Had it on tap at the PIB... couldn't wait...

- Dark caramel and brown appearance.. somewhat clear, but rich looking.... very bubbly head... large bubbles... they hung around awhile...

- Wonderful citrus hop smell... this puppy is bursting with fresh citrus hops with a touch of pine and herb... sweet caramel...

- Taste is like a smooth fresh hop red version of hop stoopid... but a much better fresh hop taste and natural citrus backbone... seriously a fantastic red... wonder what a triple Deranger would be like....

- Little dry, crisp.. bites the tongue... but overall a mouth watering experience..

- Very drinkable, smooth, decent carb, and not too chewy... a great red although I still lean more towards their free range red ale for flavor... this one mimics a certain profile that Lagunitas has drilled into the ground....

06/20/08- Had on tap at the Portland airport.

Presentation- Via the tap into a standard pint glass.

Appearance- Amber colored pour with a 1/2 inch head and light lace sheets.

Smell- Lightly assertive, but a nice nose of pine and citrus hops. Mild caramel malt noticed.

Taste- Hops are pine in majority with a light grapefruit rind flavor. Very intense flavored hops at that. Caramel sweetness works wonderful with the hops.

Mouthfeel- Average carbonation, but very smooth. Nice lingering aftertaste.

Drinkability- I would love to find a liter bottle of this stuff. Great strong ale...wonderful rich lasting flavors. This beer is a seasonal and is not retired.

10 oz. nonic at The Horsebrass on cask, and then a full impy pint, cause this is just so fucking good! The is an amped up version of their Free Range Red (which I never really cared for), 8.6% ABV, 100+ IBU according to the pub's menu.

Appears slightly chill hazed amber, with a khaki head that is very long lasting and thick.

Smell is very strong PNW hop goodness, citrus and pine, so fresh and pungent, wow! Semi sweet, spicy malt.

Taste is fantastic. I really love these big red west coast hop bombs, one of my favorite styles, and this one really nails it. Very spicy, citrus hops just dripping with resin, a super pungent tongue curler for sure, but I mean that in a great way! The bitterness is kept in check, just enough to balance the malt, which has a nice gingerbread taste. I've never had too much PNW hop flavor (bitterness yes, flavor, no), but this one gets close...to perfection!

Mouthfeel is very smooth, with a lighter body, and a bit oily.

Drinkablity is perfect. I had no problem drinking 30 oz's of this, and had I had the time, could have drunk 20 or 40 more no problem - well, at least until I woke up!

Organic Deranger Double Red. Bottle left over after GABF judging that was given to me for volunteering at GABF.

Pours a three finger dirty yellow head over minimal hazed brght rust liquid. Goreous clingy head hangs around. Smells pink grapefruit, piney, winterfresh, lemons, orange wood, and clean alcohol.

Tastes yummy. Oragnes, grappefruit, and lemon from the hops. Nice malt sweet hangs flavors around, but the end has a grassy counterpoint that's smothered int he strong malt. Tonight I was looking for some hoppy traet and I sure got it. Finish is clean on the very front, but modest other locations. Buttery hop character from amarillo hops. Bitter isn't piercing, it's more of a slow dull ache that builds as I get further down the glass. Alcohol burn is noticable and I'm normally not fond of such. But this is clean and at appropriate levels for th style.

Md-thick body and thick mouthfeel. Medium carbonation. Fantastic beer.

First beer back from a month-long break! I was saving the beautiful one liter bottle for a special occasion, and this seemed as special as could be.

Uncaps calmly, but pours well, producing a two-finger head in an imperial pint glass. Nice, clear red/orange color with a dirty head that leaves some lacing.

Fantastic aroma: straightforward, fresh, nothing but Cascade. Very juicy Cascade.

Good hop-forward flavor, but somewhat one-dimentional. The darker crystal malts come out more as it warms to provide a just-under-burnt level of carmel against an assertively bitter finish. The aftertaste is quite hot, much more than I would expect from an 8% beer.

Nice and smooth on the palate, medium-light without being spritzy. Well conditioned.

Overall, this is a nice assertive brew that does suffer some from the heat that comes through at the end. Best as a small dose beverage served a little warmer.
