Victory NATO Ipa

Pours a clear light copper. Large soapy topping leaves plenty of lacing down the pint. Smells of herbal, woodsy hops and bready malt. Strong bitterness, mild peppery note and fresh grapefruity citrus. Malt is complimentary only, providing almost enough to balance bodied feel with soft yet ample carbonation. Overall, this tastes like Hop Wallop's little brother. Quite hoppy and very drinkable. One vote for NATO!

A: Poured from the growler into a Sam Smith's nonic-style pint glass. Body is clear amber-orange with a big (3-finger) ivory head that leaves thick foamy lace.

S: Biscuity and caramel malt foundation with citrusy & floral hops on top. Not terribly hoppy in the nose, which is a bit of a surprise.

T: Sweet caramel malt is followed by piney & citrusy hops; finishes with piney bitterness - resin, pine needles and a lingering bit of spruce. Aftertaste is quite bitter, though malt sweetness remains underneath.

M: Good creaminess; carbonation is modest, heft is medium.

O: Easy drinker if you like a long, bitter finish. Surprisingly balanced otherwise, however; it's jut that piney bitter finish that reminds you that this is an American IPA.

This is a smack in the mouth IPA. It's going for pure punch with no intent at grace or a suave delivery. Strong pine and citrus tones are definitely here. Carbonation seems a bit high as I feel it for some time after I finish my sip. It's good, if you like that hop punch, but for me at this point, I like things a bit more refined and evened out. Especially since I'll be working up the ol' hop allergy with this one.

On-tap, served in a pint glass

An orange colored body. Crystal clear with some streams of bubbles. The head was a firm two fingers of off-white foam and retreated slowly, in raindrop fashion. Spider web lacing left behind.

Oily hops on the nose. Fresh cut flowers with some bready notes underneath. Additionally, some lemon, pine, and peach notes poke through.

A little bit of sweet caramel adds some complexity over these soft but bright hops. This is hoppy without being biting. Tremendously balanced. Notes of pine, lemon, peach, and apricots with large doses of flowers.

Just hop oil throughout. Extremely oily. On the lighter side of medium, with a light lingering bittersweet floral flavor.

This is an interesting IPA. I couldn't find much information online. It's almost like an American IPA meets an English IPA with German malts. This is solid. Bright but perfectly subtle hops.

Served on tap in a pint glass

Appearance – Served an orange-amber colored brew with a tiny white head. The head fades fast to leave a nice level of lacing.

Smell – The aroma is bready with notes of caramel mixed within. Along with these aromas is a nice blend of hops. The hop aromas are mainly of a floral nature but also contain some smells of a pine and herbal aromas as well.

Taste – The taste begins with a smoother malty and lightly caramel sweetened taste with notes of a pine hop. The pine grows a bit stronger toward the middle of the taste with the sweeter and maltier flavors losing some of their ground. Lighter citrus hop and some herbal flavors join the profile more toward the end. All the flavors, when combined in the end, create a moderately bitter hop flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the light to medium side for a 7% abv IPA in terms of it creaminess and thickness with a carbonation level that is rather average. Pretty good for the style and it made for a rather fast drinking brew.

Overall – While it is nothing that is out of the park it is a nice IPA and one to try if you can find it.

Found this on tap at the Somerset Hills Tap Room in New Jersey. The appearance is clear, pale reddish-copper with a polite white head and decent lacing. The aroma delivers a fairly grassy citrus with a sort of funky evergreen quality that finishes tart with a near sour cherry sweetness. The flavor brings a neat cherry-grain mix that features more of the medley of hop beauty; citrus, pine-evergreen and grassy edges. This a bit different and highly wonderful. It's medium bodied with a quality feel that is slightly viscous yet clean with a hint of a resinous surface. With moderate carbonation this brew is a thoroughly satisfying hop refreshment.
