First Review! Hi Guys and ladies!
So I'm reading the back of the bottle and they say it is orange hued. Compared to bud light sure but pretty much a dark yellow with a big white head. Pour this one slowly. I'm pouring it into a frozen pint glass nice and carefully and I'm getting a lot of head and about 1.5 inches of beer which subsides but leaves a nice fine thin head that persists throughout the whole experience. I see all these comments on lacing and yeah it's got it but who cares so lets get onto the smell. I saw another poster and they were getting hints of band aid. I think that's on the mark and may be a product of this type of yeast. Yeah it's there but don't let that turn you off it's band aid good in a way the smell of gasoline or a new shower curtain is good, am I right? I'm not a fan of the style in general but its better than just drinkable. I just tasted a dash of white pepper and there isn't any in here. There is nothing earthy here, all sky from the big bubbles on the palate to the lemons in the tree with more Meyer sweetness than Eureka sourness. Overall I enjoyed this one even the taste of the belches afterward. I suppose I'll have to get more schooled in this style but I'd grab another one of these especially since the price is so right. I love HopDevil so I'm looking forward to more of Victory's brews

split bomber into tulip.
A: hazy golden. very bright. orange at the core. head is very frothy with good retention and lacing.
S: tart, soured fruit. horsehair. hay. pears.
T: a little barny and tart to start turns to freshly cracked black pepper. finish is super dry. not finding a real malt presence here seeing that most of it dried out.
M: vibrant carbonation and refreshingly medium bodied.
D: a well-made saison from victory. i really dig that an offering of this quality is so cheap. i believe i got this bomber for $4 which is definitely one of the cheapest saisons ive had. good shit.

Poured into a narrow pint glass, color is straw gold, head color is bright white with some nice lacing.
Smell is some bready, light toasted malt, some hints of yeast and esters and phenolics and maybe light funk.
Taste is interesting, a little sweet upfront and throughout then transitions to light bready, hints of malt and toast and yeast, some drying esters and phenolics finish it up. A little bitter throughout.
Mouthfeel is a little strong on the tongue and a little sweet, strong bitterness from the taste does not linger in the mouthfeel.
Overall, a touch sweet in flavor for a saison, but there are some drying qualities and light touch of yeastiness. Its tasty and easily drinkable but not a down the line saison.

Poured into a chalice
A: hazy, pale lemon color with a white 2 finger head that hangs out for a while. Ample lacing. I poured some into my wife's Stella Artois glass and it left a big 4 finger head. I guess glass width makes a difference.
S: Belgian yeast. Earthy, funky, light citrus.
T: Lemon/Citrus comes through loud and clear with a Belgian funk backbeat. Wheat. Some bitterness and sour notes. Slightly astringent. A finish of black pepper even though there's none in the mix. Much smoother as it warms.
M: Medium with medium carbonation. Let it sit on your tongue; the bubbles do a tapdance.
O: Fresh, light, zesty; a decent sipper.

Poured from bomber into pint glass
Appearance – Pours a hazy orange-golden color with a huge white head. The head it thick and persistent and lasts for some time. It eventually fades giving way to some quite nice lacing on the side of the glass.
Smell – A stronger lemon aroma is the first to met the nose and is mixed some sweeter tropical fruit aromas. Strong and very nice. A bready aroma comes on the scene mixed with a nice yeast cake smell. A very nice black pepper smell is there as well, mixing with the sour and sweet aromas quite nicely.
Taste – A sour lemony wheat flavor is the first to meet the tongue. The sourness gives way, a bit, to some more malty flavors toward the middle of the taste. The peppery flavor present in the aroma develops more toward the end. It leaves a rather sour yet peppery aftertaste on the tongue. While not awful it is actually slightly off putting.
Mouthfeel – The mouthfeel is a little bit creamier and chewier then the average beer, which actually complement the initial taste flavors very well. The higher level of carbonation is quite appropriate for the style of beer and creates a rather satisfying mouthfeel.
Overall – For the most part it is really quite a fantastic brew with many great characteristics. Unfortunately, the after taste that it leaves in the mouth, really takes away from the overall enjoyableness of drinking the brew.

AGED REVIEW (13 months old)
This bottle has been aging in the basement cellar for a little more than a year now.
A. (3) Semi-hazed darker yellow color with an initial rush of white foam three fingers high that fizzles back down to a collar in about half a minute after delivering the initial aroma burst payload. No real lacing left behind, nor is there any noticeable sediment present.
S. (4.5) The first thing I notice is a tart green apple sour funk combined with a medium level of belgian yeast funk! Excellent! More probing and I can pull out aroma elements of white pepper, lemon peel, something sort of like galangal scent (a Thai relative of ginger) There are still some subdued floral and wet hay hopping elements present that time hasn't eliminated. I am very happy with the amplification of the funky tones in this one which has occurred over time. It's not too far gone into sourness nor is it too acidic...just right for my tastes.
T. (4.5) Funky sourdough yeasty bread with cracked peppercorns and a low dose of band-aid bite. Yes, the normally bright and crisp hopping is significantly reduced from how it was fresh but it has become equivalently more tart and sour in exchange for this loss. Light tones of funky gingersnap cookies prevail throughout the gentle mostly-dry white wine-like finish. Sweetness levels are actually lower than when sampled fresh as a result of the funk / sour conversion. Plays out like a cross between a Berliner Weiss and a Saison because of the residual lemon peel character and the "zombified" undead grassy hops fighting with the soured bread and peppercorns for your attention...
M. (3) Texture is medium thick and carbonation is rather poor after the initial rush upon opening the bottle, but that was to be expected from an aged bottle. These are the sacrifices we have to make sometimes in the name of flavor mutation...
I call this one a cellaring success. If I were to spend the money to do it again I would sample at about 10 months to see if I could get slightly more brightness out of it while still preserving my beloved funk levels. But as it is, I still enjoyed it immensely at 13 months. So if you like to amplify saison funk levels in your basement like I do, I can tell you that it does work properly with this particular brew.

22 oz bottle
Pours a hazy golden yellow with a towering off-white head. The head is thick and creamy looking, although of mixed texture. Plenty of lacing is left on the glass.
Smell is very yeasty with a wheat base. Not bad for style but not my cup of tea. For one thing, it makes me think of soap, On the other hand, it had a nice boldness and complexity.
T: much better than expected. Yeast and wheat are central, but with a nice citrusy tartness.
The mouthfeel is also very good, with none of the wateriness sometimes seen in comparable ales.
O: a pleasant surprise given the unappealing aroma.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a Golden Monkey tulip.
Appearance: A dark straw color that is barely transparent. Very consistant with the style. A small white head rises and slowly recedes leaving minimal lacing.
Smell: Grass, pepper and malt dominate. A smell that conjures up visions of summer. As the beer warms the peppery spice really shines.
Taste: Follows the nose with a brief hint of hay and grass up front which gives way to a nice malty smoothness. The pepper takes over making for a very crisp and refreshing finish.
Mouthfeel: Perfect carbonation with bubbles bouncing off the tongue. Light and drinkable.
Saisons are not my favorite but this is one of the best examples of the style. I would consider a few of these while sitting on the patio after cutting the grass.

I picked this one up from Total Wine a couple of days ago. I had heard good things about it, so I decided to give it a try.
A: Clear and yellow. This is kind of unique for saisons, as the bready character usually makes beers of this style hard to see through. I assume that they put an ample amount of yeast in it, though, since Belgian saisons are know to have high yeast contents. It produced a nice head when I poured it into a glass, though a little smaller than most other saisons I've had.
S: Very nice. It smells very citrusy and grassy. I also detect some hop bitterness.
T: Excellent. Lemon, grass, white pepper, clove, hops and yeast dominate the flavor. I've tried the beer both cold and warm and, unlike most other saisons, I prefer this one cold. It's quite refreshing, though it is more bitter than traditional saisons.
M: It goes down well. There isn't much carbonation relative to other saisons (see Ommegang's Hennepin), so it feels very smooth.
O: This is a good beer. While it differs with regards to other saisons, it's still nice. I would put this in the BPA category.

Slightly hazy, deep gold with lots of streaming carbonation and a big, but short lived creamy white head that turns rocky.
Spicy with some barnyard notes and lemon zest. Unfortunately there is also some sulfur and soap.
Flavors follow the nose, however, they are rather astringent and bitter. This beer is okay, but far from what I could call a Saison.
Light to medium body with sharp and astringent alcohol.
Fresh and zesty, this will serve as a lawnmower beer or something to drink while cooking on the barbeque.
Either this was mishandled, or something has gone seriously awry. My recollection of this beer from an earlier, unreviewed tasting was more favorable.

Bomber from Warners at the Bay, poured into a Golden Monkey tulip.
Pours a light golden colour with a relatively clear appearance. On top is a large 3 finger head of white foam that retains well with no lacing.
Smell has grain, lemon, orange zest, orange along with some pepper. Interesting and combines well early, fades away though.
Taste has plenty of yeast, some of the pepper hits as well. The yeast can dominate, particulary towards the end of the bomber, bashing away the lighter apricot flavour that tries to creep out.
Mouthfeel is pretty harsh, i think its a little overcarbonated, even for the style. Gets prickly and combines with the yeastiness, doesn't do it any real favours.
A solid saison that can get a touch overbearing at times. Not as drinkable as it should be with all the yeastiness and prickly feel, but still compares ok against others.

Pours a slightly hazy light amber with one finger of dense white head, settles to a thin layer leaving a few splotches of lace on the glass. Smell: lemon, pepper, cut grass, lightly bready, medicinal and light barnyard notes. Taste: yeasty bread, lemon peel, pepper, a little funky and estery action. Medium bodied with a soft, plush feel. Nice saison, six packs? 2012.

Poured into a Duvel tulip glass from a 22 ounce bottle that says "Enjoy by Sept. 29, 2012."
A: A slightly hazy light amber/straw color with a thick white rocky head which dissipates rather quickly to a thick coating.
S: Funky and bright smelling with a sourness coming through and even a slight leather smell to it.
T: Really earthy tasting, I can't really describe it, there's a slight tartness coming through on the finish which is rather dry. I'm picking up a lemon zest throughout with a light spice to it.
M: Sharp alive feeling carbonation with a medium body. Very fresh and lively.
O: For $4 this is quite a bargain even if I'm not a huge fan of this style. There's a lot going on here I still can't fully describe though, one day I'll have a better palate for this style of beer.

Poured from a bomber into a standard pint glass. Best by September 29, 2012.
A - Nice two finger head with lots of rapidly ascending bubbles. Transparent yellowish gold. Very clear with no sediment or cloudiness.
S - Intense aroma with alot going on. Some cirtus zest, sour hops, and mostly belgian yeast.
T - I get hops immediately, and more powerfully, than in most saisons, but it works in this case. This is followed by funky yeast and lemon. Very nice.
M - Very highly carbonated. Prickly and peppery on the tongue. Nice, crisp, dry finish.
O - It isn't the best saison out there but it is very good. Helios is one of my go to bombers because it is always available, cheap, and comes in a style that is usually more difficult to find. Saison is one of my favorite styles and the fact that I can run to the grocery store and grab a bomber of helios for half the price of inferior saisons is very nice.

A: Poured into a pilsner glass, gives a 3+ finger head, white. Golden yellow and crystal clear. The head retention is fantastic, this thing never goes away. The carbonation continues through the whole drinking experience much like a soft drink does.
S: Coriander and orange peel combined with some toasty malts thrown in there. And then that distinctive funk that I've heard comes along with farmhouses.
T: Follows the nose to a "T". Toasty malts up front with hints of coriander and orange peel followed by something that can only be described as "funk".
M: Carbonation is prickly and moves the flavors all around. Doesn't leave much of an aftertaste.
O: This is my first real experience with a farmhouse and while it wasn't a bad experience, I'm going to have to bone up on these to really appreciate them. Overall though this is what I expected from this style.

Poured from the bottle into a tulip glass. Enjoy by August 5 2012, so off we go!
A nice off white and foamy head, lots of large bubbles in this, kind of styrofoam looking, sits on a nice golden dark lemon body. Slightly opaque, easy to see rising carbonation. Nice looking beer here, as you drink and the head clumps all around.
Great nose on this. Slight salt, wild yeast sense and floral. Hints of mushy sour peaches, slight funk, very creamy, banana mush. Real unique nose.
Taste brings a nice saison palate. Yeasty bread, following a sharp spice of clove. Nice malt body on this, a little hint of tight fizz but not much which I like, not very gassy. Finish is even sweet fruits of apricot, orange, mixing in with a good funkyness.
This is a great enjoyable saison. Mix of interesting characters of density, brightness, fruit, funk, hint of sweet, just great.

Best before Sept 29, 2012.
22 oz bottle served cold into a pint glass.
Helios opens with a loud hiss and pours with a massive amount of head. More than half the glass is foam and it settles very slowly with chunky lace left behind. The beer is a very clear staw yellow color.
Aroma is intense with spicy Belgian yeast. Lots of citrus too.
Flavor is also bold and big with lemon, pepper, funky yeast, and tart citrus candy. It's almost like an imperial pilsner with saison yeast. Really unusual but in a good way.
Mouthfeel is medium-light in body and nicely carbonated. Well balanced but full of flavor.
Overall a really pleasant surprise. This beer really impresses right now. Definately worth a try and probably more than once.

A-Pours a mostly clear sunflower color. Bigger head. Head is bright white and frothy with big bubbles that slowly pop and leave half-circle lace imprints on the glass. Head dies down to a jagged sea-foam froth. Lacing is this and sporadic.
S-Smells like a slightly funky apple juice. Tart, unripened apple flesh. Pear accompanies and mimics the apple aroma. Alcohol is evident but far from offensive. Has a secondary aroma that reminds me of a cheap flowery perfume.
T-Akin to the nose, this beer is pleasantly tart and funky. Rotten apple juice (somehow a compliment). Grassy with a minute dose of Belgian spice. Euro hops lend a lasting grassy flavor. Alcohol hidden for the most part. Citrus flavor leans towards lemons.
M-Lighter body than the ABV would allow you to assume. Carbonation is exuberant. Very bubbly and assertive. Alcohol dries the palate a bit.
O/D-For just under $3 a bomber, this is an incredible deal. I have had $12 Saisons that aren't as good as this. I was pleasantly surprised by the funk/tart aspect of this beer. Enjoyable and probably my favorite Victory beer. To me, this beer is an underrated gem. The money value here is exceptional. Literally one of the better Saisons I have recently had & for a quarter of the cost of some of the overseas versions of the style. Much better than I expected.

Pours a clear golden color with a fizzy white head that leaves little bits of lacing.
Smells of funk, but like a locker room, very earthy and not what I would call pleasant.
Tastes of the funk which then blends into spice and malts. Funk leads off with an earthiness that is more pleasant than the nose. Spices then come through with pepper. This then leads to fruity notes with lemon and a bit of apple that end in a grainy sweetness. Finishes fairly dry.
Mouthfeel is medium with a smooth amount of carbonation.
Overall, this is a decent attempt at a saison, but I find the nose to be quite offensive.

A - Towering frothy white head that provides decent lacing. Beverage itself is cloudy and pale yellow.
S - Tiny bit of foreshadowing funk leads earthy, peppery and raw dough aromas.
T - First taste is the funk, followed by a peppery band-aid taste that comes in just before a touch of heat. Finish has a yeasty taste that gives way to a fairly bitter finale.
M - Thin, highly carbonated and tons of bitterness in the aftertaste. Dry finish.
O - Not typically my first choice of style, but I was hoping for a little more depth in flavor and maybe some sort of fruitiness, which I simply didn't get at all.

22oz bomber poured into my Ephemere tulip. Thanks for this one, Steve!
Live review
A: Pours a nice straw yellow with a very slight orange tinge, hazy, 2 finger white head of small bubbles sticks around for a few minutes, and then settles slowly to a full cap. Leaves decent sized lacing that sticks to the glass and won't let go. Very, very nice.
S: Different for the style. Spicy, floral hop, similar to Prima Pils. Some slightly sweet malts, and a powdery yeast. Lemon and a very weak tartness are in the background. Nice.
T: If you've had Prima, you know this profile, floral, spicy, earthy hop is up front, and slightly bitter for the style, but then the yeast comes in and interrupts it. Malt comes through behind the yeast, slightly sweet and cracker like. Hints of pepper, tartness, a *gasp* slight funk, and a faint alcoholic tinge show themselves before the dry finish. Nice, again. ABV is WELL hidden, as I said, you only get a faint warning about it's punch.
M: Only part that I'm not liking as much. Thin, slightly watery, prickly carbonation. Meh.
O: Good take on the style for an American. If this one is around for the summer, I'll buy the hell out of it. Recommended.

Victory Helios Ale
22 oz brown bottle
Served in an Allagash tulip glass
Pours a golden bright yellow with a hint of orange. A huge fluffy bleach white head forms on top leaving nice trails of sticky lacings. Mini carbonation bubbles race to the top of the glassware.
Interesting nose with whiffs of freshly chopped lemons, chalk and hops.
A clean, yet snappy beer with strong lemon zest flavors and a dry chalk quality (must be the yeast).
A tad sour and sweet (apple) with a clear nod to citrus flavors of lemon and lime with an herbal flavor. There is also a touch of spice, perhaps black pepper mixed in as well. The hop snap on the finish is equally as spicy.

My first beer of this particular style! And in a quite affordable bomber. Sept. 09, 2012 date on the bottle.
Poured into a pint glass, there is a pretty serious head, very fluffy white, 2 fingers. Pretty good retention too, but not a lot of lacing is apparent.
It smells very champagne-y. Interesting. Light, citrus zest, yeast. This would be a nice summer alternative to hefeweizens.
The taste is much like the smell. Bready malt. Nice, well carbonated mouthfeel, a bit like a wheat beer, but slightly heavier.
I have to thank Victory for introducing me to a new style, and for making it affordable. I will have to pick up some more bottles and explore a few other saison options.

At $2.99, this is by far the best price I've ever found on a bomber, and a bottle conditioned one with Brett no less.
Pours yellow with a big, bubbly and quickly receding 3-finger white head. Retention and lacing moderately sticky through half the brew.
The nose is funky and barnyardy with a nice Bretty-horse blanket wrapped around the hay bale, faint malt, pepper and waves of apple and pear fruit that are vaguely peachy at times.
The palate is med-bodied, dry and fruity up-front with a creamy yeasty texture- mild apple and pear flavors washed out by a bitter pink lemonaid flavor when the hops arrive, bringing with it the peppery spice, Brett and dry malt flavors. The brew ends dry and spicy with a smack of bitterness, then a bit of juicy acidity and lingering flavors of cereal grain, apple skin and more barnyard.
Overall, not the absolute best siason (it's that pink lemonaid middle dragging it down), but it's fairly close. And as a budget minded foodie who really loves pairing beer with food, absolutely nothing can beat this at $3.

1 pint 6 fl oz brown glass bottle with standard pressure cap served into a N'ice Chouffe stemgoblet in low altitude Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live. Expectations are moderate.
A: Pours a one finger head of slight cream, decent thickness, and fair retention. Colour is a transparent orange-gold. Looks appealing.
Sm: Very yeasty - which I like. Also some bacteria, souring hop quality, and some citrus tones. I'm looking forward to trying this. Aroma is moderate in strength.
T: Nicely citrusy, with some wonderfully handled yeast notes. Some nice hoppy notes are in there too, but are rather subtle and nicely balanced - as is the beer as a whole. A lovely build. Some touches of candied sugar and a bit of cream set the whole thing off with a tingly effect. Quite a nice little beer indeed.
Mf: Tingly, smooth, and wet. A bit too thick but it's forgivable; it probably needs that to cover up the ABV.
Dr: It's very drinkable for the style and ABV. I'd like to try this on draught. This makes me excited to try more beers from Victory in the future.
