I've been meaning to try this one for ages and finally got the chance tonight... Bottle was a bit of gusher... Dated March 27, 2009...

A - More than three fingers worth of light tan head with is both big and chunky as well as mildly creamy... A deep rich copperish bronze color with a faint amber hue... Burst at the seams with ultra rapid carbonation... Loads of lacing clings to the sides of the glass...

S - Belgian yeasts... Loaded with brettanomyces... Some grainy notes... A touch of tartness... Simple, straight-forward, slightly overpowering, but quite intoxicating none the less...

T - Yeast and brett are first and foremost and sit atop a strong hop base... Some distinctive sour notes emerge as well... Touches of pepper and spice...

M - Light to medium bodied... Intense hop bitterness... Exceedingly dry... Quite dense... Harsh intense carbonation on the tongue...

D - A very interesting offering from Victory... Rumor has it that it has been discontinued and I needed to try it before I lost the chance... Quite happy I did and would recommend others grab bottles if even the chance...

750ml -> Dogfish Head Chalice. Split with my buddy Greg on brewing/bottling day. We're harvesting the yeast from this for our first sour. Bottling amber ale (Fat Tire clone). Brewing an experimental batch and a bourbon porter. Haven't had this brew in about two years. I remember enjoying it quite a bit at first taste, first full review is below.

A - Murky, apple cider appearance. Light brown. Big fluffy head and lacing.

S - Slight hop notes, sour citrus

T - Hops not nearly as present as I'd expect. Nice breadyness (almost like sour dough) with a sharp quick tartness.

M - Feels about medium bodied and very clean.

D - Very easy to drink as it's not incredibly high ABV and suprisingly not heavy on the palate. I'd drink this again without question. Seems to be a difficuly one to find around here.

Appearance: Pours a clear slightly burnt orange color with an enormous 4" head after a careful pour. There was a whole lot of force behind the cork when I touched it, but it didn't blow when I took the cage off. There are tons of bubbles rising, so I don't think that the head is going anywhere anytime soon.

Aroma: I started getting the leather as I was still pouring the beer, so the Brett is definitely there. There is some sweetness in there along with a healthy dose of American hops. The aroma is dominated by the Brett, but it has a defined complexity that is nice and somewhat unusual for an American beer.

Taste: The flavor follows the aroma pretty closely in the beginning, but the finish departs from the aroma completely. It has plenty of hops in the flavor, but they are very reserved in the finish. The beer starts out pretty dry and fizzy, but somehow in the middle of the profile the tides turn and the malt and sweetness start to show up and run things. There is a little bit of grassy and slightly citrusy hops in the finish, but the caramel, Brett, and Toasty malt are the predominant flavors to linger. The alcohol contributes a subtle warming, and is lightening the mood as I am about half-way through the glass. Overall the beer is medium bodied with somewhat high carbonation. It is somewhat heavy on the palate for a beer this wild, so I assume that they have a pretty substantial amount of longer sugars in this one to hold off the wild yeast. As carbonated as this was now, it may be a "popper" in a year or so...I dunno.

Opinion: Overall this is a pretty good beer. The Brett is definitely the showcased flavor in this one. I personally prefer my wild beers with some more depth than just Brett, but this is still a good beer, and I appreciate where a number of the braver commercial brewers are going...by unleashing the beast on their own breweries. I brew them myself, and it takes dedication as you really can't cross equipment after they have been "infected", so this is a bold statement. Victory brews top-notch beer, so hopefully this is indicative of the wild side to come. I am looking forward to it.

Wow what an awesome beer. If you liked superfriends this one should be right up ur ally.... something about hoppiness and funkyness really gets me going... look clear golden color. smells hoppy and funky. tastes sweet, than bitter, than a little tart. the combonation of hops and the brett fermentation is really great. i wish BA had a section for IPA's with Brett. Since they get mixed in with the categories Belgian and American IPAs.

A hazy deep amber color with a decent white head and lots of healthy lacing. The aroma offers a pleasant sour Alka Seltzer citrus with mild wheat grain. The flavor comes on with a very odd chalky Pepto Bismal/Alka Seltzer idea. It's fizzy and brings some sour cherry. There's a vague cotton candy sweetness but mostly this offers pretty medicinal sour qualities. It's light to medium bodied and heavily carbonated. Modest drinkability and not really something I'm anxious to finish. Not sure what this is but it doesn't much matter.

Rather disappointing offering from Victory, I see where they are trying to go, but I just think they fall short. Bottled in September 2009.

Pours an orange amber color with a HUGE head. The head fades after a while and leaves nice lacing down the glass.

Smells like grapefruit, bread, and funk. Its really not that funky.

Taste is grapefruit up front, bread in the middle, and funk on the end. The funk lingers on the palate, and is slightly unpleasant.

Mouthfeel is light and well carbonated. The carbonation doesn't clean the palate as I would like it to.

Drinkability is not good. Its not inviting and I'm struggling to get through this even with people taking sips from it.

I expected more, but I'm guessing I do not like 100% brett beers. I feel like without the sour component, the brett falls flat.

Pours a slightly hazy soft caramel color with a large fluffy off white head. The aroma has a moderate caramel maltiness with some hints of lightly toasted bread. There is still the nicely hoppy citrus fruits from the original Hop Devil along with the new funky Brett notes. The flavor has caramel and bready malts, Brett funk, mustiness, earthy, woody, and some IPA citrus hop bitterness and acidity. The finish is dry and lightly bitter. Medium-full body with good carbonation. Good beer, interesting to try once, but I would probably just drink the Hop Devil.

Like this beer a lot. Picked up on a whim with some other brett beers I was trying.

First pour.. .25" of beer, 6" of head. Whoa. This continued until the fourth or fifth pour. Massive carbonation activity upon opening.

Head was full and frothy, almost drinkable on its own. Pours a cloudy amber color. Slight brett smell, which to me is close to a lemon gone moldy :)

Reduced brett on taste, its there, but the hops overpower it nicely. The brett is a welcome addition instead of an overpowering obsession.

Very nice. Will buy again and plan on longer pour times next time for sure.

Upon first taste, this ale seems much more akin to American Wild Ales with the hop influence for a complex (if not contradictory) sour/bitter interplay.

Aromas of bright lime, tart under rippened berries, dusty/musty/attic-like character shape the nose while bruised fruit (esters?) of peach, appricot, green apple, and pears add to the growing list of adjectives to describe the aroma. The hops nearly get lost because of the strong musty, leathery notes.

While pouring a rust-colored hazy hue, the beer caps with a firm and froathy yellowish head that retains very well and laces strongly all the while. A very nice look.

Acidic tartness takes over the taste immediately and really bring the lemon-lime and berry character to life. Backup notes of decayed woods, leather, and dried tobacco round out the mid palate along with the bruised fruit flavor and mild brown sugar sweetness. Finishing with a zesty hop bitterness and citrus rind flavor, this is the spot where the hops really make their mark and leave a lasting impression.

A carbonated fullness holds firm through the acidic notes early for a creamy effect that's short lived. a quick transition to dryness of alcohol, astringency, and bitterness keeps the beer very drinkable and refreshing in the finish.

The normal take on a Belgian IPA is to take a Tripel or Saison-like beer and hop it to IPA levels. This more complex and challenging base style is much more funky and in Wild Ale or Lambic fashion. It makes sense see where this beer can go; similar to a few of the more hoppy Jolly Pumpkin beers.

Poured this beer from it's 750 bottle into a couple goblets. It was a murky deep yellow with notes of orange and a nice small bubly head.

Nose was Bretty which reminds me personally of a musty barn. Then there were some piney hops but they were'nt upfront as in the sister beers aroma.

The yeast continues to show through in the drink as a team player. It is not very strong but rather more of a balanced component. The hops although a little bitter were somewhat hidden when compared to Hop Devil.

I was expecting a bit more of a wild ride but than again it was'nt bad.

A - Pours a very effervescent golden orange. The head is colossal, two inches of head over the beer. The lacing is sticky and full.

S - Tart lemon, grassy funk, piney hops.

T - The lemon tartness maintains for the whole taste, the grassy and brett funk hangs around in the middle and the finish is a dull hop flavor; some grass and pine

M - thin body and massive overcarbonation is rough, not good.

D - I do not want to continue drinking this. It's worth noting that I had this fresh and the gross amount of hops + the funk made this a drainpour. At a few months old, it isn't quite a drainpour as the hops faded a lot.

Appearance: This beer pours with a deep copper color and with a huge rocky head. The head goes onto produce some major, sticky lace. This sample was a gusher and its taking a long time for the head to dissipate to a drinkable lever.

Smell: I first noted some carmel and toffee notes, which were followed by some very floral hop elements. There is also an apple and bubble gum smell to this beer.

Taste: This beer has a sweet earthy taste to it, which is followed by complex levels of hops. In all, this is a tasty brew.

Mouthfeel: Full body and smooth.

Drinkability: This is a well balanced and potable beer.

A: cloudy and peach-colored, big frothy yellow head is a brief affair.

S: yeast funk, green apples, sour cherries, apple cider vinegar, all the familiar signs of Brett.

T: yup, Brett and lots of it with funk, almost like an aged cheese, grapefruit, sweet grain and a bitter hop finish.

M: medium bodied, average carbonation, dry bitter finish.

D: Ok, it's kind of like a weak sour, not sour enough to be interesting, not hoppy enough either. It seems a little bit like it can't decide what it wants to be.

750 mL bottle at 45 degrees into a tulip.

A: It pours a slightly clouded red-orange color with a huge head that, despite a controlled pour, measures three fingers of egg shell white foam that turns quite rocky but laces well.

S: Barnyard mustiness, floral hops, lemon zest, and cereal malt.

T: Heavily floral with some horseblanket, citrus notes, pepper, and cereal malt.

M: It has a medium body that is heavily carbonated but not in a prickly way, and it finishes smooth with some peppery flavors lingering.

A: pours a hazy brick red into a Duvel tulip. A slightly off white head that leaves a pretty good amount of lacing.

S: tart and sour with a lot of hops to be down and dirty. There are some funky things going on here.

T: um wow. This is my first brett beer and its a little more funky than I expected. A lot of hop character that comes out as a tart/sour orange and grapefruit. The nice sour mask the malt but not completely, there's still a sourdough quality to it.

MF: medium to heavy body and a chewy quality. The sourness is astringent across the tongue. Fairly creamy and extremely rich.

750ml. bottle split with 2 other friends. poured into a standard pint.

this bottle was quite a gusher when the cork was popped which resulted in a huge, billowy, rocky, 4 fingers of white head. lots of bubbles rushing to the top and a bit of sediment within the orange golden body. tons of furry sticky lace and great head retention.

funky, barnhouse at the forefront. light mustiness, acidic, lemon citrus, and a bit of plastic.

sharp, funky, barnhouse, acidic mustiness at the forefront. lemon citrus with just a touch of pine from the hops i presume. just a bit of a bready malt. moderately hoppy bitter finish.

medium bodied with some average feeling carbonation. acidity and a bit of bitterness linger on the palate.

drinks pretty good, but one pour would be enough for the night.

overall: the brett was definatly at the forefront which seemed to mute out the hops a bit. the only other brett IPA ive had was ithaca-superfriends and was much more hoppy and delicious. i still very much enjoyed this beer and i would drink it again, but if you like this style, you need to try the super friends!

Knew good things would come from this beer, now it's time to see if I actually know what I knew...?

Appearance:
Right off the bat I can see a dark amber IPA that is richer than a typical IPA. There is enough carbonation throughout the duration of the drink, but the head is very soon a memory of the past.

Smell:
Citrus hops with a fruitiness from the yeast and sweetness from the malt. The hops come through the most, which is expected for an IPA, but then there is this unfamiliar yeast note that is not characteristic. This realization makes me excited because I am interested to see how these flavors work together in the flavor profile.

Taste:
I am getting a spicy and interwoven deliciousness composed of pine/citrus bitterness from the hops and funkiness from the yeast. This beer also has a nice backbone from the malt, which is an added benefit to all the complexity between the yeast and hops. Citrus predominates in the aftertaste, I am impressed by how this beer brings together all the aspects of the yeast, malt and hops.

Mouthfeel:
Balanced flavors, a richer IPA than expected, but still a medium body. I like the beer's ability to use a robust yeast which compliments strong, oily hops nicely. There is no gross aftertaste, only a lingering sweet citrus.

Drinkability:
Exceptional beer which strays from the typical IPA profile in a way that is unexpected yet not undesirable. I think that the beer is highly drinkable and I appreciate that it takes an awesome yeast profile and combines it with a substantial hoppy bitterness. These two characteristics in a beer are things which I hold sacred and cherish, but are not typically combined in this fashion. This beer would complement a meal well and I would definitely try on tap.

Cheers.

First Brew of 2011! Gotta always grab a Victory when you see one you never had!

A- a glimmering hazy orange with a bubbly marshmallow like head on top. Sticky lacing lingers, while the haziness keeps company to some of the yeast like sediment. No doubt, this is how you want this style to look

S- big time orange flavor with some sourness and slight barnyard funk. Some citrus character is present with some piney hops scents too. Lil lemon zest should be mentioned as well

T- spicy and flavorful with some musty notes of flavor. Very tart and sour as expected. Dry on the exit. It's definitely complex and full of flavor

M- carbonatation is wicked on this brew. The clash of flavors really linger and I like that for the brew

D- Wild devil is no question full of flavors that puts on quite a show. This is a treat for a brew. As stated on an earlier review, I think brew can be a gateway for other sours and trials for Belgium styles that are emerging. Victory just gets it done for me. I'm thankful their brews are so widely available in cuse

A - Orange amber. Huge, loosely carbonated head almost 5 fingers high - delightfully out of control. Great lacing.

S - Sweet orange, lemon peal, bright hops, fresh cut grass, earthy yeast notes.

T - Bright cedar & grapefruit up front. Soft bready malt early in the profile. Honey. Spicy pepper and lemony tarragon. Strong yeast character. Bitter cedary hop finish.

M - Light body with a smooth round finish.

D - Great flavor, but the IBU's require some heavy lifting.

O - A spectacular IPA. If a peppery saison and an American IPA had a baby, I'm pretty sure this is what it would taste like.

12oz bottle

Pours a beautiful cloudy yellowish orange with an easily provoked nearly white head with good lacing.

Citrus hops overwhelm the nose with pine hops and roasted malts mixed decently in.

Rather sweet up front with a truck load of citrus hops in the finish. It's almost fruity to start but a very abrupt switch to the bitter hops does not mix the best.

Medium body with carbonation that is suiting.

The brew is decent but the odd mixture of flavors that do not blend hold it back from being more.

We pop the cage and cork on this brew and pour into our snifters. It appears a deep red orange that is translucent, with high carbonation visible, and a glow. Once the yeast from the bottom of the bottle hits the glass there is instant haze, with yeast particulates sinking to the bottom. It blasts up a four to five finger head of huge foamy tan bubbles that refuses to dissipate. As it finally does, cakey lacing sticks around the entire glass. The aroma delivers all of the funk promised. The brettanomyces comes through strongly, with brightly floral hops, sweet pineapple, smoky character and medicinal phenols, which could both be from the yeast. As we sip, malts and hops fight for the front. The malts are clean, with the hops somewhere between soapy and piney. The yeast crashes in bitterly through the middle. This, paired with the hops, mark the finish. The hops here are now, surprisingly, floral and a touch sweet. The aftertaste is bitter, of yeast and phenols. The body is medium, with prickly carbonation. The mouth is lightly coated, but cooled and, after a while, a bit dried. The abv is standard, and the beer is quite drinkable.

Overall, what we enjoyed most about this brew was the funky aroma, and the outrageous head and head retention. It nearly took twenty minutes to dissipate before we could even get near the liquid. All the while the brew just glowed beneath it. For whatever reason, when we first picked this up we were afraid that this would be only a minor variation of Hop Devil, which we do enjoy. We found, however, that the change in yeast made for a vastly different selection than its predecessor, for a nice, welcome change.

A- Huge white bubbly heading that sticks to the sides of the glass. Gold orange color that is slightly hazy.

S- Holy Brettanomyces Batman! Smell of brett hits you right away fading into some pretty strong barnyard funk. Spicy yeast characteristics compliment the funk smell. Little else can be made out through the barnyard smell.

T- The brett characteristics come out almost immediately in the taste. The barnyard funky flavors pick up and give a distinct band aid type flavor. A slight bitter hop flavor that was not noticeable in the smell. There is also a slight malt underlying the funk as well, but disappears quickly. The end of the beer fades into the familiar funky/brett flavor with slight bitterness. Old Gregg's got the funk.

M- Medium thin body and with a very dry finish that is enjoyable. Very carbonated as well.

D- If you like a funky beer I suggest giving this one a go. Different type of funk than I'm used to with not much sour. But the interesting combination of hops and funk in this one goes together well.

750 mL bottle poured into a tulip glass. Bottled April 22nd, 2009, opened December 16th, 2010.

Appearance-Little bit of a gusher, this one poured a slightly hazy orange copper color, with an enormous beige head of dense, moussy foam. pretty good retention with nice lacing.

Aroma-Intense Brett-y aromas abound here. Sour, apple-cidery, light citrus (lemon), barnyard are the main aromas that I pick up. There's some light citrus/pine aromas from the hops, but the wild yeast aromas dominate. Smells great.

Flavor-The IPA character shows through much more in the flavor. Lightly tart and barnyardy up front, but then some of the citrus/pine hops and caramel malt show through in the middle, before being overtaken again by the Brett flavors in the finish. Quite dry in the finish, and a little bit tart.

Mouthfeel-Medium light body is highly enriched by insane carbonation. I'm assuming that this carbonated so high because of the long period of bottle conditioning with brett (which also leads to the dryness and thinner body from high attenuation). Effervescent.

A fantastic concept, this one reminds me of a gueuze, with the base IPA barely showing through in the palate. Personally, I really liked this one, and found it quite refreshing.

S- Slight piney hops with big brett funk. I love it! Not too much else but the funk. Sour wild-like aroma.

T- Nice sour and tart flavors. Grassy hops are there. The brett shines through in a barnyard flavor. Spicy hops come through as it warms.

MF/D- Light carbonated body(champagne like). I love the funk, but it can hurt the drinkability as I can't see having more than this bottle, especially with the high carbonation.

Picked up a 750ml (caged and corked) bottle in a trade with Dawson's Liquor in Severna Park, MD and poured it into a Stone branded snifter - thanks fellas!

A: Pours a mildly hazy copper hue with a solid three-finger fluffy white head leaving a ton of lace in its tracks.

S: Major yeast funk - musty leather and wood, some sweet malt, fermented fruit with only a small amount of earthy hop in the mix - the yeast funk is very dominant, which i'm not bothered by, but I wish the hop was a little more prevalent.

T: Similar to the nose, but fortunately the bitter hop is much more present in the flavor and balances the yeast funk and sweet malts quite nicely. Being that I am a huge fan of IPA's and Wild Ales, Lambic, Geuze, etc. (anything with Brettanomyces, Pediococcus and/or Lactobacillus), this is a dream come true. If you don't like the flavor of funky yeast though, I would pass on this one. Definitely not your typical Belgian IPA, but a damn fine take on it!

M: Light-bodied with a good amount of carbonation, extremely dry and smooth leaving a slight bitterness feel from the hop.

D: Extremely drinkable - I picked up two of these in my trade and they will both be gone by the end of the night, no problem.

Serving type: bottle
