look: 3.5 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 4 | feel: 4 | overall: 3.5

Type: 12-oz. bottle
Glass: Firestone pint glass
From: Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido, Calif., on Dec. 27, 2012
Price: $19.99 for a variety 12-pack
Misc.: Box said enjoy by March 10, 2013.

Poured a honey, caramel amber color with about two fingers of khaki white head. No lacing on the sides of the glass on the way down and below average retention on the tops.

Smelled big whiff of floral hops up front with a bit of a caramel malty finish. Also got light notes of citrus hops (lemon and, even less so, grapefruit), wet cascade hops and pine. Maybe even a bit of rye in there. Not much bitterness on the nose.

Tasted similar to the nose, but within even more malts and more bitterness. Hops seemed to be dominated by cascade hops, but also citrus (light lemon, grapefruit and orange) and some pine late on the tongue. Still got some rye and also some iced tea. Malts were mainly caramel.

Light-to-medium body. Oily-to-creamy texture. Lively (above average) carbonation. Long, bitter finish.

An OK IPA if you like the maltier kinds. The best of the Victory variety 12-pack for me was the Headwaters Pale Ale, followed by this IPA (Hop Devil), then maybe the Prima Pills and Golden Monkey.

Bottl into snifter

Appearance: dark amber/mahogany, thick white head

Smell: you can smell the bitterness, earthy floral hops, minor fruity notes, pineapple and citrus

Taste: very smooth, less bitter than the nose and name would imply. Extremely well balanced, very resinous earthy hay undertones with a sharp citrus backbone. Alcohol and malt are pretty well disguised by hops. One of the more balanced ipas ive had.

Mouthfeel: not much carbonation

Overall: a very well balanced ipa with loads of hops but not super bitter like i expected. Truy an amazing beer, will be buying again. Highly drinkable.
