I will base this review on the Midtown branch, but my overall rating would be the same for either location. The atmosphere is dark and eclectic, with random memorabilia and signed pictures everywhere. There music used to be great, and is now ok since the addition of Muzak. The quality is high, as far as I can tell. I never had a bad beer. The service is great, everyone there is laid back. Tattoos are a plus in applying, I would guess. They have at least 20 taps going with new beers added frequently. With the amount of business they do, the kegs do not sit long. As far as bottled beer goes, they have well over 200 lined in glass-front fridges right behind the bar, which makes it fun to pick out what you'll have next. Food is what originally brought me to Vortex and it is great - the best burgers in Atlanta. As you can tell I am a big fan of the place and as luck would have it, I lived in the lofts above the place for two great and fattening years.

Such a fun place! The decor is fun and the atmosphere is fun. Its a little cramped and crowded, but it was very hospitable and quick. The service was friendly and knowledeable.
The beer menu is a large one. It doesn't have anything hard to find, but plenty of quality beers to choose from.
The food was amazing. I've been twice. I got the quadruple bypass burger the first time. This included a half pound burger, 5 slices bacon, 5 slices of cheese, a fried egg, grilled onion, and in place of the buns were two grilled cheese sandwhiches. I couldn't eat it all but it was absolutely delicious. The second time I got the blue shroom and it was awesome too. They also have an Elvis burger that has fried bananas and peanut butter on it. The place is known for its burgers, but my wife had other stuff and raved about that too.
Definitely a fun place, good service, good beer selection, and a friendly atmosphere. If you are ever in Atlanta, you should go.

The Vortex is a fun bar, unpretentious and with just the right amount of sleaze. The outrageous decor includes some skeletons (I presume they are plastic models, not the real thing!) on motorcycles, sort of the bar's mascot. Beer selection is very good - they have a number of local brews and quite a few craft brews, plus an impressive selection of imports, both in bottles and on tap. Food is delicious and reasonably priced. Serving people are quick, friendly but not overly so, and efficient. Music is turned up but not so loud that you can't have a nice conversation. Smoking is allowed, so it is open only to patrons 18 and older; however, this means you don't have to worry about screaming brats running amok and interrupting your meal, date, Meetup, or whatever. A great place to get together with friends, or just hang out and enjoy some good brewskis.

I eat/drink at the midtown location of the Vortex at least twice a month and I absolutly love the place. They have some of the best burgers in Atlanta (and you have to try some of the variations for tater-tot toppings). The beer selection is first class and they have done an excellent job of stocking the high proof beers. If you are also a liquor drinker they have something to make just about everyone happy. On busy nights service can be a little slow but not to bad, and they always bring out the food hot and fresh. The Vortex is also a great place for a first date because with the colection of odd art (for lack of a better word) gives more than enough Conversation starters. My biggest complaint about the place is the parking, the pay lots close by are very tight and overpriced and all the street parking is usually full. Still if you are a resident who has never been to the Vortex or are planning a trip to Atlanta you have to check out this place.

This was a really fun place to go. Wild decorations abound. The beer selection was great. They had about 150 bottles and another 30 taps. The beer samplers they offered were good. Some of the local GA brews were decent. The 420 and Terrapin Rye Pale Ale were excellent. Check out their website for all of their "policies" about their customers and how you should act. The burgers were also very good. It was alot of fun and any time I'm back in Atlanta for business, I will definitely be back at the Vortex.

I stopped into Vortex's Midtown location this weekend for lunch, and definitely want to go back the next time I'm in Atlanta. The menu was by no means complex, but there was a great variety of burgers to try (I had the Bleu 'Shroom, and highly recommend it) and the food was great.
More importantly, the beer list was really impressive. Not as many draughts as I would like to see, but hundreds (literally) of bottled offerings--a quick count put the total beer options at about 250, counting "mixes" like Black and Tans, etc.
The atmosphere was eclectic (decorated with tons and tons of stuff--no better way to describe it) and the wait staff was friendly and helpful. I'd like to go back and check it out at night to see what the crowd is like.
I tried the house beer, Vortex's Laughing Skull Pilsner. Review to come soon, but it was solid.

This is definitely the go-to burger joint in Midtown Atlanta (and the Lil' 5 Points one is the burger joint of Lil' 5). Not only a great burger but the variety is incredible. What surprised me in coming here was not only how consistently great the burgers were, but their surprising beer menu. If you are looking for a place to try uncommon beers, this isn't that place, but their selection is better than most restaurants. I usually get a pitcher with friends while eating here, but am always intrigued by their micro brew and foreign beer lists.
The service is always friendly, knowledgeable, and quick. The atmosphere is definitely one of the most unique places in town. Definitely go here for the burgers (their Pesto Burger is amazing), but you can enjoy a wide variety of beers here!

Had a blast at The Vortex. The service was very good, and the vibe is very hip but diversified. We ran into a bachelorette party and business people while in line for drinks.
The beer selection is better than average, but they mostly have a large selection of mainstream beers. There is a craft brew selection, but not a lot of specialty series, one-offs, or rare beers. Still, simple clean beers pair awfully well with a great burger, and I think that's what they're going for here.
Overall, the sexy photos on the brick walls, crazy good burgers and upbeat atmosphere make this place what it is, not the beer selection. Still a goodie, though, and an Atlanta must.

Not really a beer bar per se but they have a excellent selection of very good brews. The atmosphere of The Vortex is very different than any other place I know. Old stuff all over the walls and hanging from the ceiling etc. The staff is well a bit different is how I'll put it :). But let me add in a good way, it's one of the things I enjoy about going there.
As for food everything I've had is good but this is the place for BURGERS! Just how many ways can you fix a burger? Well The Vortex list has many combinations with catchy names and they are EXCELLENT as are the sides as well.
We always try to make it to one of the locations when in Atlanta. I prefer the one in Midtown simply because there is more room. But the one at Little 5 Points seems to have a more diverse crowd. Either way just go it's a fun place with good food and a beer selection to make you happy.

I just kinda fell off of the Marta and stumbled into this place on a recent trip to Atlanta. The edge-y demeaner of the bar is exciting, intriguing, and slightly intimidating. It's kinda like a hole-in-the-wall, biker bar meets a Topix mall store. A spit shined, grunge bar. However it's a bit too nice but tries to be too bad, I appreciate the cover pages to the beer menu and food menu. Their no-nonsense approach is dead-on! The taps are favorable as well. After browsing the coolers (stocked with about 300 beers) and their taps (aobut 30) and the list, I settled on a Lagunitas Censored bottle and a St. Bernardus Abt. 12 from the tap. Although the staff was not overly friendly, they were timely and helpful, but don't expect a ton of dialogue here. They try too hard to act so bad. Although the place resembles a goth-cartoon, it's very clean and presentable. I recommend the bar when in the area, but never mind the attitudes; it's all in pretense.
