Brewed for the first time in 2010 as a festival special for FyneFest, Jarl is a full on citrus experience and a cracking session beer. Jarl is single hopped with Citra, a vibrant and powerful American hop that gives the beer a very distinctive citrus flavour and aroma. Jarl was born out of an experiment with Citra, which was a rarely seen new variety of hop at the time, after our former Head Brewer Wil Wood got a tip off on its unique character and flavour profile.

Fyne Ales was one of the first breweries in the UK to use Citra in a brew and the results were fantastic. Jarl is now is our best selling beer and has won a number of prestigious awards, including being the current Champion Beer of Scotland. The area of Argyll is shrouded in Viking folklore and the name Jarl refers to the name of the Norwegian Earls (Jarls), who claimed many of the surrounding lands in the 12th century.

Fresh on cask in Fisherman's, Broughty Ferry.
One of the many ales now trying to entice the lager drinker. Hopefully it will work!

Bright, fresh straw colour. crystal clear.

Nice and hoppy bitter tang.

Great session beer. Better than Bitter and Twisted.

Aug. 2017: Cask halfpint at The Grill, Aberdeen. ABV 3.8%. Pale golden colour, white head. Toffee and citrus in the aroma. Citrussy flavour, decent bittering hops.

(approx 10 oz pour at NERAX last week... ramblings from vague memories)

out of many fine cask ales I had over those two days, this was quite simply the stand out champ, and I went into it not knowing the primary hop was Citra and I truly wouldn't have guessed that, based mostly (I believe) on the yeast and water character and the perhaps unique marriage of their hopping regime and the malts/grains used... I don't know how else to explain it without having had another sample on a later day in the fest and/or measuring that drop vs a bottled/canned version... the Citra character was NOT what an American would expect, with its flavors leaning more toward bitter/green-forward notes and not the common citrus pulp, semi-tropical tones found in many (NE)IPA... I recall it having a mildly hazy, yellow-hue to it, almost outdoorsy and evergreen (not pine) undertones, with the a sub-undertone of perfumy citrus... the depth of flavor was incredible, blasting my palate front to back, arresting my senses, giving me pause between each sip, wondering if I was really tasting this... ymmv... now I have another destination in Scotland when I eventually return (2134)

Pint on cask at Fyne Ales Taproom (£4.25):
Pale golden & clear with a half cm, bubbly white head that holds well throughout. Slightly floral & zesty smelling, nothing overpowering but pleasant with bread malts, hay & some light pine hops. The taste is quite zesty & bitter too, lots of earthy hops & pine with a perfume-like backing. It's well balanced & fresh, faint carbonation & a subtle tang too - best cask beer I can remember trying.

16oz can from Salt Horse. Very pale clear golden with a spotty head. Light, sweet malty aroma. Taste brings more malts along with a dry, mouth coating bitterness. Not a lot of flavor, but the bitterness lingers and clings to the palate.

Pours a clear brass color with an inch+ of pretty airy white head. All right retention, good lacing. Nose of bright lemon zest and orange pith citrus, light malt. Flavor has a nice pale malt middle with some vague bitter, citrus oil aromatics to balance and keep it interesting. A very drinkable beer, medium bodies but a light feel, medium carbonation. This is a very nice, simple, tasty, low ABV, very enjoyable beer. I usually switch it up in a new bar in a new country, but I drank three of these. A nice balance of old and new world, a little crisper and spritzier than some casks I've had, but still has that nice round, soft character. Good citra component without being a juice bomb or having that hollow bitterness some do. A really nice beer!
