Finally the first time I've seen this beer on tap or bottle. Poured into a snifter, a hazy orange with a 2 finger thick head. The smell had some citrus and caramel sweetness to it. A little bit of everything in the taste, biscuit, malts, grapefruit, soft pine, a little heat from the alcohol. The body is hearty, and very smooth and balanced throughout, with creaminess in the beginning and dryness at the end, leaving a slight hop bitterness lingering on the tongue. I had 4 of these in row, so I would say its pretty easy drinking at 9%. GO RU!

Well this beer at least convinced me that Flying Fish does use hops. Pours a crimson red, nice, good head, retention. Aroma was hoppy, not pungent, a bready aroma.

Taste, good, delivered on its hoppy promise, alcohol well hidden, good red tinge of the base malts, maybe irish moss. Not overly complex, was hoping for something approaching Loakal Red or Nugget Nectar, but this is a solid second tier amber/red ale for a hophead. Slightly grapefruitish to the hop mouthfeel.

Again, at $10 though, it gets docked overall. Better value/quantity choices at that price.

A - Orangish bodied beer with two fingers of white foam that left some nice lace and webbing on the sides.

S - A bit of a fan of the hoppy amber, and there is a nice hops presence to this one. Pine and resin, on a caramel backbone with some fruity notes.

T - Toffee, caramel malt backbone surrounded by citrus and a little bit of pine. This tastes quite nice and the bitterness is a great balance to the sweetness of the malts.

M - Medium bodied, good carbonation, a little bit sticky.

O - Quite easily drinkable, considering the relatively high ABV. A good beer, would like to drink this again.

Iam a sucker for a big hopped up red,Iam not sure this is a red but its damn good.Poured into an imperial nonic more a of copper tinged burnt orange with a creamy-like one finger white crown that left two full rings of lace as it settled.Big pithy hop aromas along with tropical fruit and slight pine resin,the alcohol presents a little sweetness but its not overbearing,a hint of caramel as well but the hops win out.Big resiny and tropical-like hop flavors overtop of caramel malt and sweet alcohol,to be honest to me it tastes like a DIPA should taste like or what alot of American Strongs do taste like.Whatever the style its an outstanding beer in my mind,I will buy a few of these in the near future.

The pour was very big. Lots of dark orange colors swirling about and a good sized head of white reaching up and over the top to around two inches before settling back down again. Really nice layered look to the sides of the glass as it was thoroughly coated all the way down, really good retention here I have to say. Lots of malt in the nose right off. Caramel, sweet notes mixing with a very big hop note, especially as it warms. Piney with a sweet orange rind like citrus touch as it comes close to room temperature. Very thick feel, sticky and full with nice carbonation, definite enough to get it done. Initially you get the piney hop bite as you take the first sip, but it became very well balanced mid palate as the rich, almost scotch ale like buttery notes start to come through and really give it quite a smooth flavor. A bit hot still and a definite big one, it hurts the session ability of it a touch, and by the end you are really pushing it with this one.

Overall not bad, actually very, very good. Straddles the line of several styles, but I would call it a strong ale as a catch all. A bit strong and young still, this would serve up great after 6 months I am sure.

Golden amber with thick foamy head. Citrus herb hoppy aroma with an underlying hint of roasted malt. Hoppiness is foremost, nicely balanced with alcohol, acidity, and malt sweetness. Citrus alcohol aftertaste with slight fruity esters, and bitterness.

This pushes the boundaries of an amber or red ale, for sure, with intense hop and citrus. The best part of this beer is the balance between sweet, acid, hop, and alcohol, which is masterful. This is a prime take on the style, especially for hop lovers.

Thanks to Beerlando for this one. Always excited to try another "Top New Beer". Served in a Half Acre pint glass.

A - Nice two fingers of creamy off-white foam that settle to a thick cap, leaving glass-coating lace. Hazed golden body that isn't very "amber".

S - So I'm guessing this is about six weeks old? In any case, a decent amount of piney and slightly catty hops - Chinook seems preeminent. Some light tropical fruit notes, and a cereal grain malt backdrop. A touch faded, but still pretty solid.

T - Again, lots of tropical fruits as well as some citrus, sweet toffee malt, lightly burnt sugars, and a growing bitterness that mounts over the course of a glass.

M - Resinous, sticky, medium body. Medium carbonation, and extremely deceptive alcohol - would never have guessed this was 9%.

D - This was probably a bit better right out of the gate, but it's still pretty enjoyable after a month and a half. Well-hidden boozes makes this one dangerous, particularly because it comes in 750ml bottles. I'd definitely buy this if I knew it was a fresh batch, or if it showed up on-tap.

A- amber, thick,foamy head leaving nice lacing

S- citrus hops,grapefruit dominates

T- good balance between sweet malt and piney and fruity hops

M- medium body, good carbonation. bitterness is just right for my taste.

D- Its a good drinking brew but be careful with 9% alcohol. Not a heavy beer but yet refreshing.

I like this brew from Flying Fish Exit Series very much and I hope they plan on six pack offerings.

Poured from a bomber into my Deschutes tulip...

A - Pours a golden amber color, with a very foamy white head, leaving some great lacing as it slowly slides down the glass. I poured mine kinda quickly, so I got some sediment in there too. Oh well...

S - Big piney, citrusey aroma. Grapefruit, orange, almost piney even. The smell makes my mouth water.

T - Woah, the citrues bitterness matches, and caries over very nicely from the aroma. The aftertaste is almost that of lemongrass. Bitter and earthy.

M - Has a medium/dry mouthfeel, with great carbonation.

O - I was very suprised by this one. Great combination of a red ale, and an ipa. The hop character is perfect. I would definately buy another one of these again.

Hazy amber body, tons of carbonation, topped by two fingers of snow white foam.

Big citrus nose. Tons of orange, with apricot support. Smack of pine. Clean, fresh, inviting.

Sweet juicy fruit hits the tongue fast. Nice bitter nip at the swallow, with deepens in the aftertaste. Great hoppy taste but not overly abrasively bitter.

Medium mouthfeel moves things along nicely.

Overall, a nice tasty effort from Flying Fish. I enjoyed it - despite the Rutgers references (Seton Hall, 1981). Flying Fish needs to make this at least an annual release.

This is a good beer

A - An unfiltered slightly red hew. Very nice legs from my Brandy glass/snifter. Very nice.

S - Light sweet malt. Small nose. Earthy/grassy smell hint.

T- Is medium in bodied & good/slight carbonation.

M - Very nice beer with complex notes. Nice quality.

O - This is a very complex, quality beer which tastes great and is not fully of fruity, grapefruit hops (primary). Very impressed a top notch beer. Very good.

Pours out a cloudy, amber with a 2-finger white head that has good retention and splotchy bits of lace until it warms and then a layer of lace.

The smell is a nice, crisp grapefruit with a mild, sweet malt aroma at the end of a large inhale.

The taste is a 3-way balance of grapefruit, bitterness and sweet malt. The alcohol, while nicely hidden, starts to warm after the finish.

Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied & good carbonation.

Overall: Tastes like it wants to run along with Nugget Nectar but it doesn't quite have the endurance. Still, this is a very fine beer that I enjoyed quite a bit. FF would be well served to put this in their regular line-up.

Pours a hazy amber color with a half inch of head. Leaves a nice lacing down the glass.

Smells like pine, citrus, herbal, caramel and bread in the background with a tinge of alcohol mixed in.

Taste is pine and caramel up front, moving into a citrus hop profile and there is a moderately long pine resin and citrus finish.

Mouthfell is thick with nice carbonation.

Overall its good, as good as I remember it being on tap. Personally I prefer this style for a hoppy beer to an IPA for the most part- this is a good example, second to the troegs amber ales

Poured from 750ml bottle into a tulip glass.

Appearance: Pours a dark reddish amber with a finger of fluffy, bubbly white head.

Smell: Floral hops with hints of sweet citrusy fruit mixed with a decent malt sweetness.

Taste: Caramel sweetness followed by a wave of citrus (bitter grapefruit and mango) and slightly bitey hops.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and crisp.

Overall: Definitely my personal favorite of the Exit Series so far. Reminds me a lot of Nugget Nectar. I'm stocking up on this bottle (which I'm sure won't last long).

A-Pours a clear amber with a rather thin off white head and a pool of head.

S-Caramel malt dominates the nose with some nice citrus juiciness. Not as appealing as the tap version which was better balanced.

T-Malty sweet with a bit of an iced tea character. A nice hop bitterness in the finish.

M-Medium bodied with a slightly heavy lingering bitterness.

O-Nice, though I enjoyed the tap version a lot better.

750mL champagne style bomber poured into a tulip pint

Pours a reddish amber with a fluffy ecru cap that rose quickly and billowed to a solid 3+ fingers. Some raindrop style retreating and lines of lace on the side.

As soon a I popped the top, the unmistakable smell of citra hops permeated the air. An aggressive hop bill that leads to an aroma of mangoes and papaya with underlying notes of pine resin. A very clean, biscuity malt bill lays the foundation for these hops to play.

The flavor profile is loaded with hops. Again, a clean, but sturdy malt bill holds it down for the pine resin and tropical fruit to stand up. As a lover of the humulus lupulus, this is right up my alley. An aggressively hopped red ale that is as advertised.

A medium body that is chewy and a bit sticky due to this thick, pine resiny characteristic it puts forward.

Overall, I found this to be a hit. A clean, bitter amber ale with a decent kick of alcohol. Not a great session like most ambers, but this is one that I am glad bucks the trend. Another solid addition to the flying fish exit series.

On tap @ TJ's Restaurant & Drinkery (Paoli, PA) on 4/3/11. Served in a pint glass.

Pours a crystal clear copper, with a thin frothy covering of bright-white head. This retains with some rich edging and leaves back some foamy swathes of lacing which slowly creep down the sides of the glass. The aroma smells sweet and sticky in the nose, with notes of caramel and ripe tropical fruit. An earthy and leafy bitterness adds some edge to this.

The taste has a lot of sweet caramel action going on with it, with a bit of an extra roasty push underneath. The bitterness here is initially very raw feeling, with a harsh pithiness in the finish that really sticks hard. Fortunately, as this warms up, more and more fruit character emerges to help balance a lot of this out and make the overall experience with this beer a lot better. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with an assertive sharpness to the carbonation which really helped draw a lot of that initial aggressive bitterness out. A slickness along the back helps carry a lot of that balancing sweetness in the profile. I must say for 9%, the alcohol here is very hell hid, with just some beefy warmth being present in the body.

As I suspected, my experience with this here on draft was much better than it was on cask. Problems with the aggressiveness of the hops aside, this luckily did end up being a flavorful and well balanced Imperial Red by the end of the glass, with that sticky tropical fruit character eventually swooping in to save the day. Pretty impressive drinkibility on this for an almost 10% beer as well and while I wasn't quite blown away here; this definitely ended up as a solid entry in the Exit series.

Big 750ml bottle poured into a Stone Imperial glass. Dark amber orange. Clear without a lot of carbonation bubbles. I poured this a bit more aggressively than I wanted and the small mouth of the bottle made the head about three fingers and it is bright white. Lace is sticking in beautiful patches.

Smell is of sweet citrus hops. Not much alcohol. Maybe a bit of biscuits and yeast.

The taste is not much like the smell. Sweet form malts. Not so much hop flavor comes through. A bit of yeast flavors come out. Not over powering though. Alcohol is not masked very well and is definitely in the flavor profile. As it warms I am getting a bit of very sweet citrus flavors... Maybe a tangelo. Not at all bitter though. I am also licking sweetness off my lips as I type. The alcohol really mellows with the bit of warmness too.

The mouth on this one is great for the style. It is well carbonated and not a bit hollow or watery anywhere in the swallow. It kind of borders on sticky, chewy. This mouth is more of a well balanced IPA, not an amber. Well done!

Overall I must say that I am very happily surprised at this one. Thanks to tsblack05 for the extra. I always enjoy getting an extra that is someones local brew and they are really proud of. Then I find out why they are so proud of the beer and the brewery. I just hope the kids at Rutgers can appreciate the beer that was named after their exit. Highly recommended!

750ml bottle, served in a small pint glass

A - pours with about half an inch of mostly creamy, somewhat dense light tan foam. the beer is clear yet some bottle sediment fell in. burnt amber in color.

S - rich with pine, lightly citrusy hops. sweet caramel malt shines through. simple and balanced, yet inviting.

T - begins with some rich caramel sweetness which carries through to the end. crisp bitterness chimes in about halfway, bringing lush pine, grapefruit, and slightly floral hops.

M - medium bodied with light yet crisp carbonation. slightly creamy throughout, aided by ample sweetness yet cut into by a pleasant bitterness and very mild alcohol burn.

O - wonderful in its simplicity. basically a solid amber with a healthy hoppy edge. not quite at Nugget Nectar level (which I feel all hoppy ambers are judged against) but yummy nonetheless.

appearance: more on the golden apprearnce with
a little red glow. how can you call this a scarlet ale when you did not accomplish the color wanted?

smell: huge hop aroma, lots of pine, some citrus

taste: in that nugget nectar category but less power. very nice balance of caramel and hops. This is a easy drinking 9% imperial red.

mouthfeel: medium bodied

drinkability: This may be one of there best beers. Very nice.. what kept this from being a an A+ was the finish. The hop flavor did not linger at all. kinda falls off. otherwise. I like a lot : )

Pours clear amber with a sticky rich white foam head that falls to good lacing.
The aromas are quite inviting with copious amounts of citrus and extreme grapefruit; in the background you get some subtle caramel maltiness and a little spicy pine hoppiness.
The tastes begin with a quick flash of sweet caramel malt but immediately shifts to the bitter grapefruit flavors; there is plenty of citrus and finally some spicy pine buried beneath the blanket of citrus and grapefruit flavors.
The mouthfeel is thick and resinous, the bitterness lingers pleasantly on the taste buds throughout the finish. This is an amazing drinkable beer, especially for the ABV. 9% seriously this drinks like a 5 or 6%, so flavorful throughout. Overall another great great offering for this Exit Series from Flying Fish. Can someone tell me why they bottled and offer the worst one of this series in a 4 pack? This and the Rye and the Chocolate Stout should be their new seasonal offerings because all 3 are amazing. Perfect complement to for Thai duck which I had for dinner tonight.

dark amber with red hues and a tannish head that holds pretty well and leaves tons of lace. lots of yeasty chunks in the last pour. should've been a little gentler, but it doesn't seem like taste/aroma/mouthfeel are effected. nose is tons of gorgeous hops with a caramelly and (to a lesser degree) sweet toasty/bready malt character. pine, grapefruit pith and tropical fruit. a very hop forward beer, but the malts do their part and harmonize to create it's personality. taste follows suit and hits you with a big blast of grapefruit and pine, which is rounded out by the malt, but balance is there, and nothing seems too extreme, although there are definitely copious amounts of hop here. medium full body. slightly bitter in the finish with some sweetness and a wisp of alcohol. one of my favorite types of beer to pair with food. thought it was awesome with vindaloo. another very good beer from the exit series. keep 'em coming flying fish!!

A - Reddish, amberish hue, slightly cloudy appearance. A little straw colored head, a bit of lacing while drinking.

S - With the hops, the expected grapefruit. A refreshing hoppy cleanliness. Wonderful clean aroma.

T - A very tasty beer for a hophead like myself. More citrus than pine. Very good.

M - Hops tingle the palette, the beer is pleasantly not overly carbonated. Medium body.

O - Being a Rutgers graduate, I'm very happy FF made such a great beer to celebrate my old stomping grounds! I may have to take a few bombers to an RU football game this fall. Well done, FF!

Nice amber color, with a very good white head. Smell was a bit understated in the malt category, but plenty of hops to talk about. Flavors were very pleasant, with hops taking the front seat and a very slight amount of maltiness. Finish was excellent which I belive has something to do with the hard water used to brew this beer. Nice carbonation, went down very easily given amount of hops. Refreshing overall with good balance, but doesn't fit the mold of your red ale except in color. RU hoo-rah!

Pours a lightly hazed, lighter than expected copper color, nice small cap od dense khaki head. Scent is dominated by citrus and piney hops, light carmely sweet malt backbone with a touch of roast. Taste brings a solid IPA quality hoppy background and bitterness, malts hidden in the background. Body is lighter then expected, good cask carbonation so that wasnt the issue. Would have liked a bit more malt and heft in the body, closer to an IPA in style then an Amber.
