Although usually identified with landfills and pipelines, the Hackensack Meadowlands is an amazingly diverse ecosystem providing vital animal and plant habitat. In a nod to a once common food plant here, we’ve brewed this beer with wild rice. We also added organic brown and white rice, as well as pils and pale malts.

Rice helps the beer ferment dry to better showcase the five different hops we added. Lots and lots of them. We then dry-hopped this Double IPA with even more–generous additions of Chinook and Citra hops to create a nose that hints at tangerine, mango, papaya and pine. This beer pairs extremely well with spicy foods and all kinds of seafood. And of course, it’s quite enjoyable all by itself.

Exit 16 deposits a hazy straw gold, SRM 2-4 when put to the light, into a Dogfish Head Fisheye pint glass. The fluffy one-inch white head leaves a thick webbing of lace.

Peppery hops are punctuated with celery and apricot. As expected, this beer is all about showcasing the hops. Notes of lemongrass come out as well. The aroma does have an oddly welcome dustiness to it.

Pineapple and grapefruit are prominent as expected with celery playing a secondary role. While fairly simple, these flavors are well done and bitterness is under control long into the finish.

Alcohol is present, though less than 8.2% would suggest. A combination of dryness and strong hops tends to numb the gums while the medium to light bodied beer pushes fine carbonation.

IIPA’s can hardly be called easy to drink, yet this one approaches that description, perhaps due to the rice. Exit 16 will easily match whatever summer has to offer.

I have a couple of Flying Fish's Exit series in 12-fl. oz. bottle format that I want to drink and review today in anticipation of a big New Beer Sunday tomorrow. This will be my second of the two.

From the bottle: "Hoppy highs of tangerine, mango and pine"; "This beer is all about the hops: 5 different ones in fact. Rice helps this beer ferment dry to better showcase the five different hops we use. We then dry-hop with generous amounts of Chinook and Citra to create a nose that hints at tangerine, mango, papaya and pine."

I Pop!ped the cap & began a slow, gentle pour since I could think of no reason to do otherwise. This worked out well as it not only maintained its clarity, but it also formed a two-finger cap of dense, rocky, French Vanilla-colored head without any outside help. It seemed determined to hang around, so I took note of its solid-Gold color (SRM = 5) as The Gelt Gang of Croesus, Mammon & Midas arrived for a taste. Nose had the unmistakable sticky, resinous pine tar smell of Chinook, underlain with tropical fruits & now my hophead mouth was watering! Mouthfeel was big, full, soft & creamy so I let it roll around on my tongue like a happy puppy. The taste was making me happy! The pine remained prevalent, but the tangerine, mango & papaya were not hiding, either. I was watching the 2017 season of "Beerland" today & they kept talking about "unbalanced" IPAs & I kept thinking that if they don't like seriously hoppy beers, then just avoid them. It would mean more for me, like this one. This was really scratching an itch on a frigid winter's evening. lemme tell ya. I really liked the way that the maltiness was biscuity, keeping things quite dry, aligning well with their use of rice. Finish was very dry, very pine-like with just a hint of fruit. Phew! I could drink this more often.

A very good DIPA. I enjoyed the flavor with the subtle infusion of mango and pine. A great balance of hops and malts. I will be a regular shopper of this brew!

$ 9.00/four pack of 12 oz bottles ($ 0.167/oz) at Franklin Beer Co, Franklin, PA.
Undated bottle stored and served at 42 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
Aroma – moderate pine and a little citrus. Pine fades and the citrus becomes more noticeable by the end of the glass.
Head – large (Maximum 5.5 cm, aggressive pour), off white, dense, good retention, slowly diminishing to an irregular two to four mm dense ring with tight lacing remaining from the head reduction. There is a thick heaped island.
Lacing – wide complete rings of extremely tiny bubbles.
Body – medium yellow, slight haze.
Flavor – Not really very bitter, more of a dry ale. Allowing it to warm in my mouth releases some sweetness but still ends bitter. The aftertaste is slightly fruity – mango but not picking up any papaya. No alcohol, no malt, no diacetyl.
Palate – medium, dry, soft carbonation.

A passable IPA but certainly not high enough in IBUs to be considered “a double IPA”.

Appearance 4.25, Aroma 4, Flavor 3.5, Palate 4, Overall 4.

12 oz bottle

Pours clear golden, coarse white suds for a head.

Smells of honey, biscuit, pine and herbal hops.

Flavor is of biscuit with some honey malt sweetness, maybe a hint of maple. Hops are mostly piney with a little citrus and herbal spiciness. Woody finish.

Medium to full body, stinging carbonation on the roof of the mouth.

Really solid DIPA, nothing at all wrong with it, but not particularly memorable compared to other very good DIPAs. I just think with IPAs and DIPAs, you really have to do something to stand apart these days to be excellent. It's such an overrepresented style. Still, you certainly won't regret getting a pack of these if you see them.

My first time trying a Flying Fish offering - not a bad way to get introduced to a new (to me) brewer...

The IPA pours out a thick white head with good lacing that follows all the way down the pint glass. The smell was the best part of this brew for me - a strong scent of oranges blending well with the advertised wild rice. The mouthfeel had a distinct astringent-ness to it, and it had a medium-bodied and slightly carbonated touch, even some smoothness to it as well. Though it had a strong taste of citrus, some spice, and of course the IPA bitterness one would expect, the bitterness wins out and the equal blending I look for just wasn't there. I have to say, I've had better double IPAs, but this one at 8% ABV is very drinkable - so much so you gotta be careful not to slam more than a few...
