2006 Batch

Brilliant cherry-tinged amber with a full tan head, just a bit of lace, and a lasting film. Nutty and biscuity malt is smelled with just a hint of artificial strawberry flavor smell. Hopefully that will go away with some time? Starts out sweet and caramelly, with just touces of nuts, fresh biscuits, and just the slightest touch of that artificial strawberry, though on the tongue it is able to blend with other more pleasant esthery undertones along with the caramelly sweetness to be much less obtrusive. Without it, this would only have stepped up to 4.5 on flavor. Overall, this is what an amber ale should taste like (IMO). Not like a slightly darker Pale, but full fo rich malt without being too strong, sweet, or cloying. Hops provide only as much bitterness as needed, allowing the tasty malt to lead the show. Body is full and very pleasing, but light enough to lend itslef to a VERY drinkable brew!

This brew poured out as a reddish brown color with out a whole lot of head on it. I think that the bottle may have been a little old. I felt that it looked a lot like a tea of some kind. The smell was a little fruits with some herbal notes in there. The taste was a lot like an unsweetened raspberry tea. The mouthfeel was thin and not very heavy at all for the color it had. The beer was alright, I'd try it again for sure.

A - This beer pours a deep ruby color, and has a large creamy off-white head. The head left okay lacing on the glass.

S - It smells faintly of toasted malts, a bit of fruit, and some citrus.

T - The initial taste is toasted malts. There is caramel sweetness present, as well as some fruitiness, citrus, and some earthiness.

M - The body is on the lighter side of medium, and it had good carbonation. It goes down pretty smooth.

D - The drinkability is pretty good. It goes down easy, and it is pretty refreshing. This a pretty good beer, and I think its worth trying.

Overall, a pretty bland example of the style. Poured an amberish-ruby. Aroma was vague sweet malt. Overall flavor profile was on the sweet side, with little distinctive about the hopping. Mouthfeel was a touch thin. Not bad, just uninteresting and average.

Had 2 samplers at the brewery to see which beer I wanted most. Many good ones but for a 16 oz this won out. Pours a maroon chestnut translucent color with minimal head. Smells floral, roses, tea leaves. Taste is slightly sweet iced tea with malted tones. Feel is dry and crisp. Taste / feel lingers in a good way. Easy drinkin on a warm summer evening. Wish they sold New Holland in Mass.

s- I've had this bottled and on tap, and of course it's a bit better on tap, so that's where I'll focus.

a- Dark amber, not quite black but very dark.

s- Average. I don't really remember any stand-out notes.

t- This beer instantly tasted to me like somebody had poured Killian's and Guinness into the same glass. If you're a fan of reds, this seems like a pretty fine beer, sort of a sampler for the genre. There's some creaminess and burnt like Guinness, but also some hops and bitter like Killian's.

m- Average. Not too creamy, not too watery. Bitterness and burnt flavors are average for the type.

d- Again, average. This is a pretty good-tasting beer if you like reds, and goes down well. I'm never shaking the last drops out of the glass, but I do tend to look for it when it's in season.

verdict- A pretty good red, and if you'd ever felt pulled between ordering Guinness or ordering Killian's, now you have a solution- order this, and get both! (Actually, I'd still go for straight Guinness, but this is a fun try once in a while).

A - Nice deep amber with no head to speak of which is weird since I had hard pours all night.
S - Mostly rum or bourbon. I really couldn't pick out any other smells but a alcohol smell...
T - Kind of heavy dark fruit. Really wasn't too harsh with the ABV (which is what BTW? I must be around 6 or 7 at least)
M - Really harsh to drink. Almost off putting. Other may enjoy it more than I did and I was defiantly a sipper.
D - Na no thanks better than the Dragons Milk but not as good as the IPA. Wouldn't seek it out again.

12oz btl poured into Kasteel goblet.

A: Copper with bright red highlights shining through. Little bit of head from strong pour, not much of it sticks around for long...just some clingy remnants.

S: Sweet, pleasant aroma. Fruity undertones, but I have to really linger to get much from this one. I'll give Red Tulip a pass in this department b/c I am slightly under the weather, but I don't detect much.

T: Not terribly impressive. This is a very mild beer. Flavors are strictly sweet. No real hop presence to speak of, but certainly this is intentional. Something about it tastes vaguely Belgian...most likely the bread-like finish.

M: So-so in this department also. Feels slightly undercarbonated.

D: I wouldn't necessarily want to, but you could drink several of these mainly b/c there is nothing offensive or particularly distinct about this beer that would prevent sessioning.

I'm not a big fan of this style and that has a lot to do with the low score. If red/amber ales are your thing give it a try. In fact my girlfriend loves malty brown ales and this happens to be a beer that she really enjoys. New Holland has many other offerings that are well worth trying, most notably Dragon's Milk.

Appearance: Pours a clear mahogany color with a rocky ecru head; leaves a few squiggly lace pattern on the pint glass walls

Smell: Caramel dominant, with a toasty character and a hint of grassy hops

Taste: As with the aroma, the caramel malt dominates up front, with some hints of toast and a grassy bitterness that develops by mid-palate; after the swallow, the malts continue to dominate, with a dark fruit and powdered chocolate character on the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium to full, perhaps a bit too syrupy; moderate carbonation

Drinkability: Reminds me of a doppelbock to some extent, even though this is an ale; not bad, for a change of pace from the hoppy side

Had this on tap last night at Fries Cafe. Poured into a pint.

Appearance: Pours a reddish brown, ruddy color, mostly clear, with a short, quickly disappearing white head.

Smell: The fragrance is full of grainy malts, with no hop presence. Very light and hardly detectable overall.

Taste/Mouthfeel: The malts come across as light and biscuity with a slight sweetness and are accompanied by a light, floral hop finish. Overall not very flavorful or impressive - I wouldn't necessarily know this was a red ale if the bartender hadn't told me or the name hadn't alluded to it. Feel is moderate and slightly flat, not really helping accentuate the taste.

Drinkability: Moderately high, but not because it's full of great flavor or feel; just easy to keep drinking because not much gets in the way.
