Pours ultra light pale Bud-Light but coalesces into semi-milky straw color with monumental fourteen finger head. Needless to say head retention doesn't seem to be a sticking point.

Highly lemony with spicy cinnamon + wheat-straw clove accents.

Tastes lemony wheat w/baking spices as overtones. Pretty watery, non-distinct on the buds.

"tis no Drag's Milk. Must make do.

A-golden amber color with a nice off-white head and decent laving

S-yeasty bread, bananas, cloves, toffee

T-bready malt, bananas, cloves, hint of pepper, slight sweetness

F-medium body with moderate carbonation, smooth

O-a solid domestic Tripel, not at the top of the style, but a very tasty beer

Poured from an undated bottle into a tulip.

Appearance: Pours a slightly hazy , deep honey color. There was almost no head. A thin ring of foam remained.

Aroma: Typical Belgian funk with slight caramel.

Taste: A nice balance between the funk and the caramel which had equal billing in the taste. There is very slight bitterness and spice, with the slice accentuating toward the end. It finished a bit sour with a slight astringency.

Mouthfeel: This beer has a full body with fairly light carbonation.

Overall: I like this one a lot. I'd call it a classic Belgian. Very refreshing and satisfying.

A- Clear, Golden, a bit darker than the glass of Merry Monks sitting right next to it. (Merry Monks is a very cloudy bright golden, while this is a deeper richer color.)
S - nice, but muted. Too cold? Perhaps, thermometer says 45, exactly the same as the MM, but the MM has a stronger brigher aroma. But this is actually nicer, more fruity, apples and pears or maybe banana? And maybe a bit of Juicy Fruit Gum?
T - Sweet start, fruity, and with a nicely bitter, long, dry finish. No alcohol that I can detect.
M - nice, light, washes over my tongue with complete viscosity.
O - very drinkable, nice, I would certainly have again. My comments seem critical, and maybe I was expecting this to be better, but the reviews are mixed, so maybe this is one of those that everybody has a different opinion over. I'm just doing this to try to improve my tasting abilities, esp with the belgians. I expected to like it better than MM, but I think MM will still be my standby (not saying there aren't better tripels, but easy access to Weyerbacher products here and they're always reliably excellent). But I'm very close between Black Tulip and MM and wouldn't be the least bit disappointed if I went somewhere that only had BT but not MM. Certainly worth trying and seeing who's review you agree with.

Bottle (vintage 2013) poured into a Chimay chalice.

A- 1-finger, khaki head drops to a light film and leaves light spots on the glass. The body is a ever-so slightly hazed copper with moderate carbonation.

S- Sugary sweet at first. Some clove and black pepper with light banana and green apple accents. Almost like banana bread with the sugar content upped. There's a lot going on, and it all comes together in harmony.

T- Whoa, that's big. Lots of residual sweetness. More of that clove and black pepper with a little apple. The alcohol wants to peek in, but it's not harsh in any way. Clean, dry finish.

M- Full bodied with moderate to heavy carbonation that does its best to keep up. A little alcohol warmth.

O- Very full flavored example of the style. The Tulip Time celebration has just come and gone, and it got me wondering whether New Holland was still putting this out. Lucky me found this at the Copper Vine. I'm thinking of hitting up the New Holland tap room this week. Maybe a tap offering is in order?
