22oz bottle picked up the second day this was on shelves in chicago. drank from my sierra nevada hop tulip glass.

A- this one pours a lightly hazy light orangeish colored body with a short but long lasting bright white head on top. small spots of lacing are left behind.

S- spicy rye malts are the first things to greet my nose. after that i get some bready and biscuit like malts with some added caramel sweetness. decently hoppy. pine and grapefruit.

T- the taste starts out with some biscuity and bready malts. after that i get some caramel which adds a mild sweetness. spicy rye malts move in next. nice and hoppy at the end. mostly grapefruit and pine.

M- the body is a solid medium. the carbonation is about average also. nice and bitter.

O- i like rye IPAs, and this was no exception. ill be picking this up again. i like the affordable price of $5 a bomber also.

Note: According to New Holland website, this beer is not retired but will be made again (next ship May 2013).

2012 Vintage poured into a snifter-type glass.

A little disappointed in the smell; seems like a standard pale ale or even with low hops. Nice white foam with lacing on the sides after the head dissipates. Color is nice copper.

Taste is pretty good, but nothing to write home about. Mouthfeel seemed medium-light; lots of carbonation.

Overall, I find myself wondering if I've let this get too old and it's lost some of the flavor (7 months old; kept in a refrigerator for a few months and the rest in wine/beverage cooler at 45 degrees). Either way, I'd prefer Red's Rye (one of my favorite beers). I wouldn't be offended if someone served this to me at their house, but I don't think I'll buy it again.

A- Hazy red copper. Head is one finger white, retains pretty well and leaves several wisps of lacing.
S- The smell is a bit lacking in the rye for me. Has a nice juicy citrus aroma, that under most circiumstances would be considered good, but the rye is really lacking here for me.
T- What I said about the aroma does not apply to the taste! It still strikes me as an IPA that has a second-fiddle rye, but I like the combo of flavors here. Citrus and woody hops pair well with an earthy, slightly spicy rye. Good flavors here.
M- At first it struck me as a bit chewy, but the carbonation is a bit strong and on the whole I would call this a dry finishing beer.
O- The flavors are spot on. I would like a bit more rye on the nose, but still a strong effort.

New Holland is a great brewery that produces one of my all time favorites: Dragon's Milk. Mad Hatter IPA is their flagship brew, though I haven't always liked it. But, Mad Hatter has always been zany with randalized, dry hopped and other versions at festivals. For their 15th Anniversary, New Holland is hatterizing seven different version of their flagship.

I came across Rye Hatter at Chicone's and couldn't pass up the new version. Hazy copper ale with an off white head that builds quickly and lingers. Nose is an assertive hop blend with a pungent rye note. In the taste, the rye battles with the hops for supremacy over a caramel sweetness that attempts to balance but comes up short. Dry finish keeps the rye and hop lingering in the mouth.

A good beer that's an overflowing punch of flavor that I'm enjoying for tonight, but I probably won't pick up another bottle of it.

Poured into a perfect pint.

4.0 A: Moderately hazed orange amber color. Two fingers of frothy beige head. Retention is pretty good and tons of lacing is left.

3.5 S: Citrusy hops with emphasis on orange, mango, and papaya. Caramel sweetness to accompany the bready maltiness. Not a whole lot of rye in the nose, but enough to add a touch of earthy spiciness. Earthy hoppiness secondary to the citrus and herbal underneath that. Equivalent balance between malts and hops. Good.

3.5 T: Again equal balance between hops and malts. Citrusy orange and mango with earthy undertones. Mild bitterness. Caramel sweetness with breadiness from the malts and yeast. Rye is more apparent in the taste giving the earthy spiciness that it does. Again, good.

4.0 M: Heavier medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Good creaminess and quite smooth.

3.5 D: Quality beer with no real faults, but not really that impressive. I think more rye would have given this more of an edge over a standard IPA.
