12 Oz Bottle - Nov 20, 2007. Thanks much Sean! Aroma with settled caramel, oak, vinous malt. Light spice and long reduced hops. A nice burnished ruddy brown, quite clear. No head. Flavor is a calm, gently spicy wood tone. Sandalwood to be exact, backed with some tea-like musk and a smattering of Mediterranean spices, bright. Classic old yeast and aging malt flavors, some certain oxidation, of course, at this age. Dry. Not bad after 7 years, really. I’m happy to have gotten a chance to try this really rare treat.

12 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 5/15/2017. Pours fairly hazy/cloudy medium orange/amber color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky off white head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Thick soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap, Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big grapefruit, orange, lemon, peach, pear, plum, golden raisin, apricot, melon, red apple, citrus peel/rind, wood, peppercorn, pine, honey, caramel, brown sugar, toasted biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/earthy hops, fruity yeast, and dark/bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, orange, lemon, peach, pear, plum, golden raisin, apricot, melon, red apple, citrus peel/rind, wood, peppercorn, pine, honey, caramel, brown sugar, toasted biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of grapefruit, orange, lemon, peach, pear, plum, golden raisin, apricot, melon, red apple, citrus peel/rind, wood, peppercorn, pine, honey, caramel, brown sugar, toasted biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/earthy hops, fruity yeast, and dark/bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and no cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering bitterness. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/bready, and sticky/resinous/rindy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 9.6%. Overall this is an excellent American bareywine. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/earthy hops, fruity yeast, and dark/bready malt flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the big ABV; with the modestly bitter/resinous/drying finish, not overly aggressive. Feels like Chinook/Centennial, reminds me of Bigfoot. Awesome balance of juicy/earthy hops, fruity yeast, and dark/bready malts. Not overly sweet/heavy from lingering resinous drying. A very enjoyable offering, and spot on classic tasting style example.

Just had this a few days ago (do the math) and I'll just say that there's a strong case to cellaring some strong beers on lees. It was a transcendent experience--I'm fortunate to have a lot of old ales, barleywines, and other high-octane stuff, most of which continues to improve with age. The "problem" is I need to start drinking some of these rather than just "inventorying" them! I'm glad I made an exception in this case. I hope I can get more of their other high gravity offerings for my cellar (and eventually, my palate)...

Pours a murky brown in color with a touch of dark copper in the light, plenty of sediment in this one, a small medium tan, dark cream head quickly recedes to a ring. Aroma shows some prunes and raisins, a good bit of old worn leather, some sweet cherries and spices, with a hint of the alcohol. Taste is similar with the ginger like spice making a strong showing, sweet cherries, a fairly drying woody and grassy finish with some warming alcohol. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy, low level of carbonation, but what is there carbonation wise has started into a sparkling phase, keeping the feel lighter with a little zip. An outstanding barleywine fresh, this one has aged very well. The aroma shows some good oxidation, but pleasantly so, and whatever the ginger like spice is that has developed is quite nice and blends well with the somewhat sparkling carbonation.

Been sitting on two of these beauties for about 2 years now and have been waiting ot open one for a special occasion. Well there is no special occasion except for my liver needs fed.

Damn good looking BW here very dark russet in color with loads of sediment. A hard pour yielded very little in way of head besides a tan ring around the glass and some lace here and there, very minute.

Well from the nose I would say this beer may be at its peak and may have a few more years of life. We shall see what the mouth suggests. Thick with dried fruits led by fig and date with raisins and brown sugar in a reduction of maple syrup and milk chocolate. Malty as hell and very thick toffee notes. Slight hints of oxidation which deters in no way at all from the aroma of this complex giant.

Much drier than I thought it would be. Very little residual sugar. A very bitter finish with oxidation noticeable on the finish and mid palate. Finish seems to last forever with a fig paste flavor that lingers and lingers. Dates, raisin, mollasses half way in the process to brown sugar with hazlenut and toffee. Amazing how bitter and tannic this is. I would guess this beer is slightly past its peak yet will hold up nicely for another three or four years. An amazing beer and a pleasure to sample.

Obviously this one was made before the year 2000 in recognition of the hype. But I just drank it last night so it's been aged for over 4 years. Well, the aging has definitely made this a beer worth savoring. I couldn't believe how smooth it was and how drinkable this beer was. The flavors melded together perfectly. It wasn't too hoppy either, unlike most American Barleywines. Alcohol was there but only provided a background to the sweet flavors ensuing around it. Lots of caramel and raisins mixing around with the abundant yeast sediment. The hops were also present towards the middle and left just before the finish. The finish was somewhat creamy in the way the alcohol wavered out and more malts came in. If you can find this, get it.
