From Hipercor Huelva. In Maredsous chalice. Shared with JJ. Drinkable but not memporable. There are better winter beers but also much worse ones. Not too much sweet.

Seems like a classic Belgian Bruin. The head is generous but disappears pretty quick. The nose is yeasty. The first sip delivers nothing at first and then pours sweet malt on the swallow. I definately taste "vanilla" and "tobacco leaves" as stated in previous reviews; those are similar flavors and seem to be symptoms of the candi sugar macerated by a cultured Belgian yeastie. A slight sourness at the end hints at some wild yeast, but I'm guessing it's the youth of the beer instead (my bottle is marked 14/04/06).

I wouldn't pair this with cheese. I'd get a black bread, something made with molasses, toast it heavily to get it crisp, spread it lightly with truffle oil and toss a few grains of sel de mer on top.

BB 08-03-06. Nice head and a beautifull dark brown beer collor with red shine when holding to the light. Nose is lots of vanilla, backed by caramellic malts ans part of coffeeroast. Overall fruity though mostly cause of vanilla but yeast brings in some ripe apple and banana. Taste is also nice and full being strong and creamy cause of the vanilla with nice caramellic note and good banana taste strongly alcoholic and probably spiced litle also, moderate bitterness in aftertaste and overall enjoying and good fresh taste. Well worth trying sometime as the vanilla certainly gives it a different twist and overall a well drinkable brew.

Appearance: Thin lacing to start with shows that the head is deficient. Bright brassy brownish amber gives off clarity.

Smell: Smells of passion fruit, fresh tobacco leaves and toasted grain.

Taste: Substantial tropical fruitiness gives a feigned sweetness that has a juicy middle. Spicy alcohol drops a handful of solvent flavour. Sizeable bitterness both from the bold phenols and hops. Leathery dry finish.

Mouthfeel: Solid crispness, medium body and a layered smoothness make a nice feeling in the mouth.

Drinkability & Notes: Oddly complex but quite flavourful none the less, pair this one with a complementing sharp cheese or contrast it with a sweet soft goat cheese.
