A pale golden ale featuring a crisp, clean malt flavor, Gold Spike is the perfect quaff for a warm day or when you are just looking for something a bit more refreshing. Brewed true to style, this interpretation of a German Kölsch uses an authentic yeast strain tracing to the beer’s ancestral home of Cologne.

22 oz bottle, Best by 3/22/11
Golden in appearance and a 1 finger white whispy head that gets the job done.
Smells crisp. Some lemon grassy like hops with a nutty bready malt scents popping out as whiff further.
Very crisp and very refreshing, this Kolsch displays a crisp hop bill being slight citric quality. Bright nutty grainy malts make this beer so well balanced.
Medium bodied with very n ice crisp carbonation. Slightly dry finish has you coming back for more.
Extremely drinkable and very crisp and refreshing. I will be looking for this beer during the summer for sure. Great job BBC!

I'm not an expert on Kolsch-style Ales but have recently tried a number of them that have appeared in my market area. Purchased a single can of Gold Spike at the Craft Beer Cellar in Westford, MA and found it very enjoyable as to both taste and overall feel. I'm not sure how Gold Spike would rate as an example of the Kolsch style but can say that it merited a return to CBC to purchase a 4-pack. Hope it continues to be available as a part of Berkshire's product line.

Can. Pours a crystal clear yellow. Looks macro. Thin head-ring. Aroma is much like several of the style I had before. Buttery bread. Flavor is pretty clean. Has a nice, fairly crisp finish. Pleasant aftertaste. Really simple, really light, really easy to put down. A pretty solid Kolsch.

Can from Bantam Market
A clear straw yellow with a thin, white head that falls off rapidly leaving little lacing, this looks decent. The nose is mildly fruity and unfortunately, mildly buttery and a hair metallic. A pleasant lemony hop character is present. The palate opens soft and doughy with a mild creamy, rustic dough character, along with a mild fruity note. The mid palate is where all the off flavors are most prominent. A little butter, a mild grainy tartness and a very thin and disjointed feel. Drying on finish, this beer is mildly carbonated. Disappointing.

From the 650 ml. bottle best by 11/05/15. Sampled on July 22, 2015.
Straw yellow pour under a boisterous white fizzy head that fades to a ring.
Aroma of crusty malts, crackers, toast, dank cellar, and a little bit of grassy hops.
Light to medium body.
The taste is mildly sweet and toasty with a mild to moderate earthy or grassy bitterness coming up from behind.
