France 44 has enjoyed a reputation as one of the more notable local beverage retailers even since before their remodeling several years ago. Said remodel turned a once claustrophobic space (think the original Zipps, Hennepin-Lake Liquor, etc) into one of the most architecturally pleasing and visually engaging specialty beverage retailers around, so if youve grown weary of the industrial glare of the would-be Warehouses that blanket this town, youre in for a surprise. But make no mistake, they are a beautiful, boutique retailer for a reason, as they share breathing room with one of the more posh neighborhoods of Minneapolis, and are but a short stroll from both Saint Louis Park and Edina. As such you would naturally expect prices to follow suit, thus making them one of the most expensive specialty beverage retailers in the area, and in this assumption youd be half-right. Prices do tend to spiral up a bit by comparison to retailers known for their exceptional budget-minded prices, and yet at the same time the diligent shopper browsing through this stores wide selection will notice many a mark-down from an otherwise high MSRP or Price Point (as an example, for those of you whove yet to pick up a bottle of DeuS, I saw a solitary bottle that could be yours for just a bit over $17.)
In-store tastings, a wine cellaring program, and a bright and airy specialty food and cheese shop are all among the many features that make France 44 stand out from your average corner package store, and yet their beer selection does not suffer in any way, easily a notch or so better than the best of the MGMs here in town (although the selection is in no way on-par with the stellar Cellars or boundless Blue Max.) Moreover, theres a greater variety of beer in their coolers than stocked on their warm shelves (including a great single bottle selection for you gotta-have it now impulse buyers) and the abovementioned remodel saw the addition of a walk-in beer cooler, making France 44 one of the first area retailers to offer this feature. More recently theyve added a mix-a-six-pack shelf complete with six-pack cartons, located toward the front of the store (but not so far away from the beer coolers that youll miss it) and well-worth checking out. Bottom line? While they may not be a Beer Advocates first choice as a destination retailer (*cough, cough* - Blue Max!) you owe it to yourself to stop in for a visit if you happen to find yourself in the neighborhood of France 44.

France 44 Wine & Spirits has become my stand by beer store since I moved to Minneapolis, because it is the closest store to my place that has a good selection. They are a wine store first and foremost, and I find myself browsing their wine selection more so than their beer selection. However, they do still carry more than just the commonly found craft beers, and all but the make your own six pack section are kept in the cooler. I have found the service to be really good when I am looking around the wine area, and nonexistent when I'm in the cooler looking at the beer. The young guy who is usually at the register, however, seems to know some about beer, and has commented intelligently on the beers I've been purchasing a number of times. All the service I have received has been friendly and knowledgeable. The beer prices seem to be on par with what you'll find at most other stores in Minneapolis. The wine prices are a few dollars more per bottle than at other stores, but they do carry a lot of wines I haven't seen elsewhere. So I'll forgive them for that. Overall, this is a destination store for wine. For beer, however, it is a nice store to shop at if you are in the area, but nothing to go out of your way for.

A- A big, fairly spacious place. Coolers of beer in back right, with a fairly large portion of the beer in a walk in cooler.
Q- All the beer except the mix a six beers are in coolers. This is a bit more of a wine store than a beer one, but there seems to be a good amount of care dedicate to beer.
Ser- Friendly, quick, knowledgable.
Sel- Selection is a step behind Four Firkins or Zipp's but still pretty solid. American bomber selection is strong. A pretty strong quantity of regional beers.
Prices on bombers are quite reasonable. The rest of their selection is average or a dollar above.

Located in a big biuiding that also housed a deli and wine shop that dwarfed the beer section. I was not very impressed with this location. You have to walk through about 10 aisles of wine racks and people talking about the virtues of wine before you reach the miniscule beer section. Most of the beer singles were non-refridgerated, with most of those being overpriced belgian singles. In the refridgerator cases they had some locals and regional stuff, but not that spectacular of a selection (tons of mendocino, for some reason). I wouldn't go back to this place, not a very convenient location, and their love of beer is evident by the locations of the product in the store.

I've ordered just off of their online store, so this is going to reflect that. The site is organized very well, and they have a ton of beer I cannot get in PA (Surly, Goose Island, Deschutes, etc). Prices are about standard for the product...paid 8.49 for a sixer of Black Butte, 16.99 for Surly Wet, 8.99 for Surly Cynic, 19.99 for Surly Five...nothing egregious. Customer service is great, with multiple emails sent on the status of my order from both France44 and UPS. On my most recent order, I actually got an extra bottle with a sticker that said "this one's on us" on it....really cool. Shipping costs are very reasonable....22 bucks for eight cans and ten bottles seems fine, with everything enclosed in a bottle shipper with brown paper in abundance in the box. Another order I got from them featured my order wrapped in a ton of bubble wrap with packing peanuts in the box. Excellent web shop, would recommend.

A clean, spacious store with an ajoining cheese shop/deli that may be worth checking out in forthcoming visits. All the beer is kept in the cooler and most of the domestic craft located in a walk-in cooler. Not exactly the best enviroment to look around but you know the beer has been stored correctly. Not the most extensive selection as it is surpassed by many stores in the metro. Did not see any employees helping customers but they were friendly and helpful at checkout. Prices are at or just barely above the cities prices. Good store for the neighborhood, but not really a destination store.

I had my experience with France 44 through their online ordering system and had 6 bottles of Sheaf Stout sent to me.
First off, the transaction went very smoothly and I'm now chilling one of the bottles to enjoy later. Great communication and quick to ship my order makes points with me.
I see some beers on their website seem a bit pricey but if I am hankering for some beers from Surly, I now know where to go.
I had, like I said, a very good experience and I'll be shopping with France 44 again.

Nice store down towards 50th and France area.
I like it. Yes, it is more expensive than other places but they get all the limited releases that sell out fast at other stores. The staff is friendly and will hold bottles for you if you ask nicely. Nice walk in cooler of beer along with a many cooler doors of beer. They also do singles and BYO 6 packs. The only really knock on this is the overall value as prices tend to be a little higher. If you're hungry they have a small deli on the other side where you can grab some food.

I ordered a 4-pack of Abrasive and Furious online late Thursday. I live in California, so I was okay with shipping rates to try these two high quality beers. What I didn't expect was service that went beyond my expectations. Based on my experience with other online beer purchases, I expected my package to be shipped sometime the following week. No, it was shipped the very next day on
Friday!! And, I received the beers four business days later.
I received my shipment today, and I am thrilled. Both Abrasive and Furious are really fresh.
I will not hesitate to order from France 44 again, if they carry beers that I can't easily get my hands on in California.
Very happy customer.
