Clearly the preeminent beer bar in Asheville and one of the better beer bars I've seen. Looking up at Barley's out on Biltmore ave., you really have no idea just how sizeable this place is. Upon walking inside, there is very large dining area with an informal vibe. This place has almost something of a crackerbarrel vibe to it in the downstairs dining room, except that in this case there is a good size bar area in the back on the left, and then there is another good size pool room and tap room upstairs as well.
The draft selection here is large, diverse and well thought out, with a clear emphasis on local and regional breweries. I would add that just because there is an excellent selection of 20 or so beers downstairs, don't figure there's therefore no reason to go upstairs. There are another 30 or so beers upstairs, and from what I could tell, there is no overlap in the two draft lists. There is no crap on tap here, and while I'm sure they likely sell BMC products, I never saw anyone drinking any macro swill the two times I stopped by.
As for service, it was very good both days I was here. The first day the upstairs bartender was very, very knowledgeable, very quick and efficient, and more then willing to let me essentially buy sample glasses. The woman today was every bit as friendly, and while not quite as attentive and knowledgeable, I still felt as if I got good service.
As for food, I ordered the calzone. You have your pick of ingredients with your order, and in my case I got the Italian sausage and black olives. My calzone was enormous, and the young lad next to me blurted out "oh my God" when he saw it arrive. My thought was pretty much the same, and I was impressed by the size and quality of my order. Like their beer selection, it's apparent they take their food here very seriously.
One last thought. All of the places I visited in Asheville have been family friendly, and it only struck me as I was leaving here that the staff at Barley's had no problem with a young (maybe he was 9 or 10) lad with his dad at the bar next to me. Both were enjoying a slice, with the young man enjoying a coke while his dad had a beer. For a moment, I felt as if I'd been transported into some parallel universe, one where common sense and sanity were the order of the day. Ah well, not to worry, I know that feeling won't last for long.
In any event, this was a very impressive place, and one I would always visit whenever I'm in town.

Large open room, bar to the left, dining on the right. Bar is really quite long.
Tons of draft selection. Somewhere between 20-40, dont recall exactly.
I love that most of the selections were local, which is the point. Much better than the Thristy Monk in that regard.
Had a sandwich that was fairly decent, nothing revolutionary. With so many other awesome food places this aspect can be skipped.
Servers were really patient while you examined the selections, there are so many, and they offer samples which is key in my opinion.
Definitely a must stop in Asheville IMO.

We went here on a Sunday afternoon and drank at the bar upstairs. My wife was on crutches and they were nice enough to let us ride the food elevator to the upstairs bar.
The upstairs bar is very big with plenty of pool tables and dart boards. We didn't play pool but I think I heard someone say it was only $0.10/minute per table, not bad at all.
The bartender was nice and knowledgeable of the beer he had to offer, but had a dry personality. As I was sitting at the bar, a group of craft beer noobs were asking for suggestions to try something new, the bartenders response seemed a little snobbish to me, and I later heard the noobs talking about how rude he was.
Upstairs had around 20 taps, 8 or so were NC beers. Overall it was a nice selection and I had a Lips of Faith beer that was brewed only once. One thing I loved was that there was no BMC to be found anywhere. Didn't try any of the pizza. Prices were pretty reasonable, $5-6ish per beer. Overall, a nice laid back place to drink a beer. I'll have to try the pizza next time.

Great selection of beer and ale. The pizza is superb. This is a very busy place. A lot young college kids partying here. It is very loud. Expect a wait on the weekend. I drank the Highland Porter. Enjoyed it much. There is something for everyone here. I definitely plan on going back.

Large space with a "historic" feel, with a nice long wood bar, tin ceiling, etc. Plenty of room, with well spaced tables. We went during the lunch hour and it wasn't all that busy.
This place has a boat load of taps. The overall quality and selection, left something to be desired. Alot of really nice NC brews, but nothing that was outstanding. I love how the culture in Asheville embraces the beer scene, but overall the beer being produced there falls behind the likes of Michigan, WI, and CA.
We did not try any food, and we did not return during our three day stay. Not that we didn't care of the place, it just didn't offer enough for us to return a second time. There are better options in Asheville, and they are close.
