willett barrels! i love their whiskey, so this is a treat. i also think its very cool to see a beer in barrels this rich and mature that is not a big stout or porter. the red is a neat and unique base to showcase the barrel character without matching it in intensity with dark grains and booze, i think its brilliant. the base beer is still strong, and it is quite sweet, almost takes on barleywine properties after the barrel. the platform is wintery, rich, but somewhat simple, which allows the nuance not only of the whiskey itself but of the oak barrel to come through in a way it rarely can in darker beers. the whiskey is hot on the alcohol, less sweet than others but still with vanilla and butterscotch notes, and the barrel is charred and older, lending a timeless mellowness and sweetness here. lots of body, notes of molasses and honey, nutty toasty red malt that makes this hearty and seasonally perfect, and lingering whiskey there at the end. lots going on, but the genius here is the red as a base beer instead of a stout or porter, great stuff, tastes stronger than its listed ABV.

Bottle poured into snifter.
A muddy deep copper color. Off-white head is small bubbled, thick, and slow to settle. Rings of lacing cling to the glass.
Smooth bourbon, bit of toasted and sweet malt. Boozy.
The bourbon flavor is first and foremost, but it is smooth and pleasant. Nice light caramel and vanilla notes combine with the sweet malts, some breadiness, herbal hops, dark fruits..
Moderate carbonation and pretty full bodied.
Great, smooth, easy to sip BA brew. Nice take, different from the big stouts that normally fall into the BA category.

Enjoyed in a hotel room tumbler after being chilled in the ice bucket--less than ideal, but that's what I'm working with here. Quite a redolent pour, with rich booze-infused raisins and caramel on the nose, along with somewhat subdued hoppiness. Tastes like it's sitting somewhere between an aged red like Clown Shoes Rexx and an aged barleywine. Really enjoyable, a smooth sipper with a bit of spicy finish and plenty of bourbon and barrel characters.

Pours an effervescent & ruddy chestnut color with 2+ fingers of fluffy tan head. Stellar lacing pretty good head retention
S: Bourbon & a little cakeyness
T: Follows the nose, some oakyness & herbal hop notes up front. A little caramel mixes with Bourbon, vanilla and a little dryness as this warms, a little sourmash as well, nice vanilla and caramel as well. Finishes sweet, cakey with a little cherry & sourmash
MF: Cakey, slight carbonation, nice rich body
This one far exceeded my expectations, if there are any bottles still around, I will buy a few more!

Pours a dark brown with copper highlights, some head but recedes fairly quickly
Smells of bourbon barrel and some boozy malt thrown in there.
Taste starts off with a rich bourbon flavor that takes control and is delicious. The end though finishes with a reasonable hop bitterness which is different from most barrel aged styles. The hoppiness of the Imperial red shows here. It works well, but I think age would smooth off a little of that bitter edge and make it perfection.
Mouthfeel is spot on, creamy and rich with perfect carbonation.
Overall a great beer, well worth picking up and possibly even aging to see how it changes over time.
