look: 4.5 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 4 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4
Appearance: Poured from a 12oz bottle into an old fashioned pub pint glass, this porter came out as expected: a deep dark brown with two fingers of head. The head appeared a thick creamy tan, think latte, and sustained well into the session. Some yeast residue remains in the bottle.
Smell: A very accented caramel and roasted grains, perhaps traces of coffee, suggestive of a sweet taste. I poured it much colder than the recommended temperature for dark ales, but it was nonetheless intensive and remained so without fading.
Taste: As the smell made me anticipate, caramel taste is front and center, then some brown sugar and roasty flavor. However a few nice surprises await here: the beer appears to be on a much dryer side than the smell would suggest (a big plus for me); and there is a stout-like smoky flavor on the palate which is quite enjoyable. Hopping is low but still makes the bitterness on spot for this style; some presence of what are probably mild English hops shows in the aftertaste.
Mouthfeel: Feels creamy and goes down smoothly. A medium body and moderate to high carbonation (given the style) makes this porter pleasant even in warmer weather. Mild enough to easily finish two in a row, yet robust enough to make you feel a vibe.
Overall: This turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. A high quality product from a small startup in Serbia that measures up to the big names. The fact that it is not too sweet is much appreciated. The mysterious trace of smoke is a treat, and makes me wonder if there is a bit of smoked brown malt in the bill. I am a hophead but I enjoy this beer even though the style is not my favorite. I would not change a thing--which is a rarity.
Pairing: I'd like a nice, medium, 11oz, USDA Prime, New York Strip Steak with this.
