Pours from the growler a blackish brown with a substantial mocha-colored foamy head. Nice aroma of roasted coffee, some chocolate, earth and pine. The taste is substantially the same as the nose, though the chocolate comes through stronger. Medium mouth and somewhat chewy. Well-made. I'm contInually impressed by the amount of flavor Roughtail is able to pull from their low-point offerings.

Appearance- Black, very slight brown/red hue.
Aroma- Chocolate, roast, and some fruity hop notes as well.
Taste- A mild milk chocolate and caramel is noticeable at first followed by some citrus/orange hop flavors. At the finish there is a very mild hop bitterness and roasty malt to rounds things out.
Mouthfeel- Soft, dry in the middle, and creamy in the finish. I'd say this in between light bodied and medium bodied as it has a noticeable malt body upfront, but fades into a lighter/clean finish that really makes for easy drinking. Once again Roughtail hides the low abv very well.
Overall- I definitely see their reluctance to call this a black ipa considering this has a hop presence for sure, but it isn't the dominant feature. Leans more towards being just a hoppy stout as chocolate and roast malt flavors stand out the most, but the hops compliment this very nicely. Overall, this is very good with great chocolate-roast balance with a citrus hop that makes for a flavorful hoppy dark ale. I'll be looking forward to more of this. (85/100)
