Bierkraft is an ok place. When I heard about Bierkraft I was expecting alot. Their selection is decent, but not great. They may have a bunch of beer, but nothing that's too hard to find. The Key Food grocery store on Flatbush and Sterling has a comparable selection of beer. This "beer store" is in competition with a little grocery store. Lame. You can also find beers at random quicky-marts that Bierkraft doesn't have. I really think they should have laid off on the trendy chocolates, pastas, meats, and cheeses, and focused on beer. I do like how they have growlers. They usually have about twelve or so beers on tap. That's more than other beer stores in the area that only offer two or three. I do enjoy a good growler. Their service is good. The guys who work there are very knowledgeable, and helpful. They can go on and on about each particular beer which cool, but not unique. The thing that really chaps my caboose is the price. Very expensive. I was there a couple weeks ago probably spent $50 on beer which is fine. I go to another store with a similar selection and could have saved like $20. That's $20 that could have been beer. Argh. Overall I think it's eh. I would recommend going there at least once to check it out, but I don't think I'll go back except for an occasional growler.

Bierkraft could be a great beer store. They have a very good selection of bottles and draft and they are in a great neighborhood. But their prices are beyond insane. They really are taking advantage of their customers on certain bottles. I don't know why anybody buys beer from this place when you can go to any other place and get the same beers for a lot cheaper. They do have some good food in which you can sit down and enjoy your beers with which helps.
I'll start going back to this place once they come to their senses on pricing.

This place makes me mad. I do some teaching right around the corner, and since I love beer, I love to browse the local stores. I always walk into Bierkraft because it looks cool. There are always people there, they always have stuff that I've never seen. ..
I'll start with the good (the few good)... Sandwiches, awesome... Selection, awesome (for how small the place is)...definitely some rare bottles... tap prices, ok...
Now to what makes me mad about this place...The bottle prices are atrocious. You can get some of the same beers at the bodega around the corner for much less. It really feels like robbery, like they're taking advantage of their willing regular customers. They obviously are looking more for profit than they are just being an awesome beer store.
I'll pass on this place. Overrated and not worth the money.

We were very excited to go about ten on a Sunday night visiting (and kid-less!) and we found out as truth what we gathered by checking out reviews; THIS IS NOT A BAR as if it was it would have been open! To have a bar does not mean you are a bar and we'd have made other plans if we knew, certainly to check this place out after reading reviews. Noone mentions this so I figured I would... Take off that they are a bar, they are not no matter how good a selection of beer they might have since I haven't had a chance to check that out due to false labeling... It a appears a store with beer, with a sandwich shop next door that you can get their beer through. Hopefully we'll make time during the day. The bar we did go to was down on 4th; the one we surmised'd be the best of the lot there for our tastes and it was a goodie, from waiter to variation; we stick to Belgian beer pretty much and were not disappointed at the 4th Avenue Pub. Go there if you want a bar, cause Bierkraft isn't one and they shouldn't claim it as such... Will review it later IF we make the time to go...

I really really love this store - everything except the service. The beer selection is excellent - many beers that I haven't see elsewhere in the US. And I have never gotten an oxidized bottle here. The growler fills are a great new addition (though $4.50 a deposit for the growlers is a bit steep, and they refuse to refill other growlers). I come here regularly to fill up on Sixpoint. The cheese selection is also quite nice, and they give samples before you buy.
I have had good experiences with service here, but the last two times, it was inexcusable - on two differnet occasions, two different employees were rude and condescending when I asked them questions. If you are going to serve specialty products that attract knowlegable consumers, please treat your consumers with respect!

I'm fortunate that Bierkraft is quite close to my Park Slope apartment. In addition to a great selection of bottled beers, they always have a selection of 10+ drafts for growlers/22oz bottles. I find the draft beers to be a good value, while the bottled beers are a little pricey (even for NYC). In addition to the beer selection, they have a great selection of charcuterie, cheese and chocolates. So, it's really hard to go in here without dropping some serious $$$. The staff seem knowledgeable, although I haven't interacted with them too much.
August 2012 update:
I have been back numerous times since my initial review 3 years ago. However, not nearly as much as I would if their bottle prices weren't borderline ridiculous. I went again very recently, and just couldn't get myself to buy anything. Eagle Provisions, about 20 blocks away on 5th Ave, has a better selection and prices about 20%-30% lower. Also, I find the service at Bierkraft to be hit or miss - too many visits where I was treated like they were doing me a favor by filling a growler or ringing me up. I really want to like this place, but they make it too hard.

This is a small gourmet shop in the middle of Brooklyn. It's not paradise, but you may find some interesting beers here. All of the beers are in coolers along one side. There are also a few glasses to choose from. They had some 3 liter bottles (Arrogant Bastard and some belgians), though I did not see how much they were as I do not have much use for that much high alcohol beer in a sitting. They look cool, though. Anyway, the prices was fairly high and I spent way more than I would have liked on just 6 beers. Oh well my prize was that they gave me a slightly old bag of Blue Cheese and Onion Potato Chips for free. They weren't half bad.

Stopped here after visit to Brooklyn. About a 20 min subway ride.
This place is a combo beer store /bar. A small place they have 8-10 coolers with a fairly decent selection of stuff including some obscure foreign brews. Warm bottles line the shelves on the other side. Singles are available for everything and you can take to go or drink in. One side of the store is the beer aisle the other side has a deli counter where you can order sandwiches and sweets, well as 6-8 tables. They aso have a nice patio outside.
In the back they have 10-12 taps of cask but selection was nothing special. Growlers avail to go like many places in NY.
Overall this is a cool place with a good atmosphere but the prices are crazy - 40-50% markup on many bottles i've seen elsewhere

I don't know if it is just that I have been spoiled by Half Time or something different, but Bierkraft doesn't floor me like I thought it would. Will I go in for the odd bomber when I am strolling around the Slope? Of course. Will I try and make it to their tastings? Verily. However, I don't find their selection all that encompassing, and the prices are somewhat absurd at times considering I can get a lot of the same beers elsewhere for less. At times they deifinitely have a couple rare bottles that I am willing to pay extra for and they have a very good Belgian selection. However, overall it is nothing more than a very respecatble beer store. What makes up for that is the artisanal foods that they also carry. You can always make a good meal out of some fresh bread and cheese, and what better way to top that off than a good beer from the cooler?

After missing Bierkraft's Tuesday night tasting (damn!) and going elsewhere for dinner, a friend and I did a mad dash through here about 10 minutes before closing. Really nice selection of regional beers, including lots of DFH stuff I hadn't tried before, and quite a few that I hadn't seen in other stores. Grabbed Chateau Jiahu, Stone Old Guardian, and a couple Goose Islands (this is all I could fit in my suitcase to fly home), and ran for the register.
Next time I'm there I'll try the cheese and chocolate, of which they also seem to have a really nice selection. My friend grabbed a truffle on the way out and said it was fantastic.
Good looking place, and I look forward to returning!
