what an unassuming yet absolutely amazing beer destination. the food menu was small but the pizza with jamacain jerk chicken and pineapple was excellent! The bartenders were pleasant and the right level of attentive. The beer selection.... It seemed like a wall of beer taps 40 feet long with 2 coolers of bottled high end singles and the second floor had a separate line of oak aged taps. and they have plans to expand?
From my NH perspective, prices were very reasonable and the beer was spot on tasty. It would take me a few months to get through their lineup after work and that doesn't count the rotating taps. Definitely worth a visit if you're anywhere near the area.

We visited Barley's on the way back from Atlanta.
thanks to the reviews I read I knew there was a upstairs. I tried 2 from downstairs then headed upstairs for the others and FREE POOL. My 20 year old son was amazed...he had never been to a place that didn't have Bud or Miller Lite on tap...impressive. ;)
Pizza was very good and BIG! service was good and knowledgeable, my only gripe was not being able to order beers from upstairs while eating downstairs...but I simply walked up and paid for what I wanted and walked back down.

This is the second Barley's I have been to and this location is a slightly smaller version of the one in Asheville, but with the same great beer and pizza. Went on a Monday night so it was not crowded, but the service was excellent, our waitress knew how to pour a beer, which is a plus. Had the Chicken Thai pizza, which was awesome and tried several different beers, some on tap, some in bottles. This is a great place for a beer lover and I will hit this place up several times while in Greenville.

This is the place for beer in Greenville. There are two floors downstairs is open for lunch and dinner with tables outside and a long wall of taps. Upstairs opens in the evening and has a smaller tap wall with billiards and darts. The tap selection upstairs and downstairs does vary so check out your menue or ask your server. The beer selection is the best and they offer just about anything your heart could desire. They also frequently change some of the line up. They also host a lost of events with terrapin and Harpoon. Last but not least the pizza is the best in town.

Barley's is the place for beer in Greenville. Between upstairs and down, the tap selection is extremely good. The pizza is always excellent as well. Having tried Barley's in Asheville and Greenville on successive weekends, the pizza was quite a bit better in Greenville. The waitstaff in Greenville told us that the water is more consistent there and easier to work with.
Had Terrapin Imperial Rye, Stoudt's ESB, and Rogue Locker Stock Love and Hoppiness IPA - all very good and served in a non-chilled glass. Signs were up for the Weyerbacher release party this week.
Beer-crawling through Greenville with Blue Ridge at one end and Liberty at the other, Barley's is the anchor.
Sothern Tier and Stone now being served!

Hit this on a recent trip to Greenville, and left wishing we had one down here. The hype didn't quite live up to the reality (most of the brews they had on tap, I had tried already), but still a more-than-solid selection. My friend had a sampler of beers, and I'll have to hit that next time, it was affordable and included a good amount of brew to sample. We split a pizza which was a good bit better than anything in these parts (plus, try the garlic rolls), so food was not a problem. Waitress seemed knowledgeable, and knew what brew you wanted without having to break it down. Atmosphere was weird, appearance is like a German beer hall, but on this Saturday we went, a lot of families were there. Would have liked to have seen it on a Friday or Saturday night.
A good selection of beer, really good food, this is a must visit in the area.

This place was located only a couple of blocks from Blue Ridge BC and a few steps from Greenvilles Transit (Bus) Center. Their pizza came highly recommended by the locals, but having just had lunch, I was in drinking, not eating, mode.
Entering the wide double doorway, the m.d.s. was a corner just inside and we were invited to seat ourselves. There was a nifty stained-glass window above the doorway that caught the afternoon sun nicely. The first floor was mainly standard restaurant tables and chairs with a few high tables and captain's chairs scattered throughout.
To the left of the doorway, in the front of the building, was a private party room. The long, blonde wood bar was to the extreme left of the space with a wide cooler and a bunch of tap lines as part of the back bar. The back bar also featured a colored-chalk chalkboard listing new selections, flanked by two mirrors and above it all was a collection of glassware as well as a collection of "dead" tap handles. Along the back wall were the kitchen area to the left and the lavatories to the right. Barley's Upstairs was roped off, so I did not get to even take a peek.
Beers: I struck out on my first two selections - Foothills Seeing Double IPA and Abita Strawberry Harvest Lager. I then turned to a couple of old favorites - Terrapin India Brown Ale followed by Terrapin Rye Pale Ale. The IBA was a wee bit old and more malty than I would have liked or remembered. The Rye, however, was fantastic as always. LNCBC, take note, I like rye beers, but you need to amp yours up.
Final thoughts: Great camraderie among the staff, which is a n important component of any customer-service business.

I can't believe I've never reviewed my favorite hangout, so here goes.
Barleys is set in a old building with a bar and dining downstairs and pool tables, darts and a shuffleboard type game upstairs. No food upstairs but beer of course. If you're like me and like to watch sports while out there aren't but a few TV's but I'll sacrifice that.
I've had almost everything on the menu at one time or another and the food is excellent. I do think they could use some more appetizers on the menu. Pizza is the specialty and they do it well, my fav is the BBQ chicken on wheat dough. But they have a lot of toppings many you wouldn't expect. The Philly cheesesteak is awesome I subistute portabellos for the reg. mushrooms.
The crowd is very diverse and kid freindly which can get a litle loud at times lol. I've only seen unruly people once or twice and they were taken care of very fast. And like other posters have said on Friday and Sat. night they are very busy.
Now for the important part the BEER. No one in the upstate or state for that matter holds a candle to Barleys espcially since the cap was popped. No matter your beer style you'll find something you want and probably several. If it can be had in the state Barleys will have it or be getting it.
The bartenders are very knowledgeable about beer because they are beer lovers also. Most of the wait staff have been there quite awhile so they know thier stuff also. The owner, Josh knows and loves his beer also so that doesn't hurt things at all.
Try this place you'll like it!

What can I say about Barleys but AWESOME! I had the privilege of visiting this establishment just after they lifted the alcohol cap in S.C. (two three weeks afterward). They were ready for it. They had several high gravity beers on tap micros, Belgians, and other imports. Tons in bottles as well. The atmosphere was bar like and festive, but just shy of rowdy. The bartenders seemed to know the products fairly well, considering that they are still in the learning phase. I was lucky enough to arrive during a Flying Dog promotion. The crowd was in a good mood.
The pizza is delicious here as well didnt try anything else on the menu.
Ive been to several beer bars across the U.S. and this has to be one of the best Ive seen.
I think that once this place gets established under the new laws, it will attract people from miles around.

Until they "pop the cap" on high alcohol beers in S.C., this bar is doing as well as can be expected. They have a large variety of bottle selections and 20+ taps. One thing to consider though is that half of the taps are upstairs and this area if often roped off for lunch, hence no access to these beers unless you get a real nice server.
Right now it is pricey at a Saison Dupont costing over $4 but I imagine this will change when they start having higher alcohol beers on the menu and those take top price billing.
The food is good though I must say that the Aheville, N.C. location beats this one in just about every way that a place can be beaten. That having been said I still think it is likely to be your best bet for a nice brew in Greenville. What did you expect? It's still South Carolina.
