The bottle says Abbey Ale, Beeradvocate says European lager, the magic 8 ball says ask again later. I understand how this beer might be perceived as a lager: stainless and herbal hops finish a honey malt clean and not so removed from your favorite Czech Pils, but maybe the spritz of caramel apple-funk or rotting dandelions sets this drink apart. Maybe.

St. Druon de Sebourg has a thin, loose, white head and an opaque, bright-orange appearance, with scant lacing and brown yeast pieces afloat. This clouds up even more upon swishing the bottle and pouring in the residual yeast and gunk. The aroma is strong- alcohol, fermented grain, sugar, citrus rind, and dates. Taste is of a similar cast, with an overall old character. Hop bitterness is minimal. Mouthfeel is medium and chewy, and St. Druon de Sebourg finishes mostly dry, mellow, and relatively easy drinking. It is unusual, as bier de garde tends to be, but I rate it excellent, nonetheless.

A - Light orange pour with a bubbly foam head. Plenty of carbaonation here. Translucent and some lacing.

S - Floral smell and a scent of berries is noted.

T - Decent flavor of raspberries and other sweet fruits. Yeast gives it almost a champagne feel.

M - A bit too carbonated and thin for my liking. I suspect this is what turns many off from this beer.

O - This was an interesting pale ale from France that was better than I expected. Not the best example of the style, but worth a shot.

This beer poured out as a decent looking golden color with a white fizzy head on top. The smell of the beer is malty, grainy and some hop aromas in there. The taste of the beer is bitter and slightly sweet. The mouthfeel of the beer is pretty good, decent carbonation and light to medium body. Overall this brew isn't terrible but it's not the best of it's style.

From the caged, corked green 25 fl. oz. bottle marked L9062-08:16. Sampled on November 12, 2011. It looks like a Belgian Pale Ale with its golden pour although the head isn't much. Sadly, this came in a green bottle along with its inevitable skunky aroma that supersedes any decent analysis. After a few whiffs I can get some sweet, candied malts and citrus. The body was very pleasant falling into the medium range with a honey-like smoothness. The taste was a tad better than the aroma with solid sweetness of malts and a mild and appropriate bitterness on the end. I guess I'm glad I bought it for under $7.

Poured into a 0.5L Duvel tulip from a 750mL bottle. No date, but there is a code "L9062 08:17", whatever that means.

A: Beautiful golden color, paler than most. Head is a bit small, probably due to my pour.

S: Smells sweet, and yeasty, slight grain aromas in the background.

T: Much cleaner than the nose would suggest. A very nice easy drinking beer with good Belgian character. Sweeter than I would like, though.

M: A little too slick and thick from the sweetness I suppose.

O: Pleasing, though I guess I am wanting it to be dryer to complement the abv/lighter flavors.

Taking a day off from the madness of Philly Beer Week. So this is a perfect time for Blind BIF #5, Blind Beer #7, from abraxel.

A-Pour is a mildly hazy straw with hints of peach, a frothy off white head and good sticky lacing. It has the color of a kill shot but not sure.

S-Rather light in aroma. A bit of a Belgian yeast sort of aroma but not much going on.

T-Hmmm. Oddly sweet, a bit tangy, a little slick. Not sure what to make of this but I am guessing a Belgian blonde. Though this could be a lager too, really. Not much flavor.

M-Light to medium bodied, a bit slick.

O-Well, it's not undrinkable. But I don't care for it either, really. *Hoping* this is a killshot. Let's see:

Jenlain St. Druon. Well, I did get the style but was not a fan.

A: The beer is hazy golden yellow in color and has a light amount of carbonation; lots of yeast particles are visible floating in suspension. It poured with a finger high bright white head that never quite completely faded away.
S: The smell is very fruity and has aromas of apples and pears along with hints of grainy malts.
T: Like the smell, the initial taste is both fruity and sweet while the finish has a light amount of bitterness and some notes of spices and yeast.
M: It feels light-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation. There are some hints of dryness in the finish.
D: The beer is easy to drink and the good balance between the sweet and bitter flavors makes the taste rather interesting.

Half-pint at Coles in Buffalo - told it was a hoppier bier d'garde. Arrives a hazy light straw golden color with a little head.

Nose is sweet with hints of lemon and grassy hops. Taste is lemony with a pleasant grassy and lemony hop bitter finish, a sweet almost candy middle from the malt, hints of apples and pears. Drinkable and light, not overly complex and too sweet, needs a drier finish. Drinkable but not overly complex.

12 ounce bottle from the Beer of the Month Club, poured into a Belgian fishbowl glass.

A: Bright yellow color, mostly clear with a wispy white head that recedes quickly.

S: Lots of fruity esters -- apples, lemons, grapes and berries aromas give this a nice bouquet.

T: Lemony tart taste with some yeasty bready qualities. Some grassy and hay flavors as well give this a complex flavor.

M: Lite to medium mouthfeel, well carbonated.

D: Nice, refreshing enjoyable beer that I thought went well in the late weekend afternoon. Would pair nicely with a tossed or caesar salad. According to BOMC, this is an example of the Biere de Garde that the northern French area is known for.

A - Pours a clear golden straw color. Bone-white head that forms a thin ceiling of tiny bubbles.

S - Spicy Belgian yeast, green apples, pears, clove, lemon citrus, sweet wheat.

T - Clean wheat off the top, not as much yeast as the nose described. Bits of green fruit apples, grapes, and pears meld well with the spice. Has a lemon pepper kick towards. Finishes crisp and dry.

M - Effervescent carbonation, light bodied.

The nose is very nice on this one with the yeast and fruit being on the forefront. Wheat as more pronounced in the flavor. Highly drinkable. Very refreshing.

Big creamy 2 finger head over crystal clear honey straw colored.

Nose of light Belgian like malts, light wheat, little banana, creamy malts, light Belgian like fruity yeast, some straw aroma.

Taste is creamy light malts, straw and wheat, some sweet Belgian malts, fruits with banana apricot etc, light crisp malt and hint of farmhouse dry yeast. Finishes drier but sticky creamy mouth finish and lingering malts and light farmhouse wheats and Belgian yeast fruits. Other fruits like apple, pear, vaprocot, etc.

Mouth is lighter with decent carbonation, less than I expected.

Drinkability is ok with sticky slight finish and almost too dry but still creamy but no booze.

The beer pours a dark gold color with a thick frothy white head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is decent. It has a solid pale malt scent along with a touch of caramel malt sweetness and a dry finish. The yeast gives off some subtle hints of fruit and breadiness. There is also a metallic feel as well. The taste is decent as well. It has a smooth pale and Munich malt flavor with a dry yeasty finish. It tastes almost like a German Octoberfest. There is a faint bready character as well as some hints of yeast fruitiness in the finish. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a medium bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a drinkable beer, but not one I'd return to.

Got this beer as a part of a Beer of the Month club.

The beer is golden in color and and has a thin white head.

The aroma is sugary sweet with a strong smell of hay along with a hint of apple.

The initial taste is sweet and then immediately turns pleasantly bitter. There is a noticeable apple flavor.

In the middle the beer is dry and seems to evaporate rapidly on the tongue. The taste of the hops comes through at this point.

The taste at the end is still pleasantly bitter and there is a slight hint of lemon.

Overall, I enjoyed the beer. I noticed some bad reviews of this beer, but I have also noticed that some people are referring to this beer as a Belgian Abby style ale when it is actually a French specialty ale. For that reason I compared it more to beers like La Fin du Monde out of Canada rather than the more "candy-like" Belgian ales that I actually favor.

Enjoying this brew on tap at Purvs. A decent choice...

Appearance: On tap, the beer is a clear, golden color with very little head. Poured in an appropriate glass ( well, the name of the beer is on it), I did expect a bit more.

Smell: Sweet, big on honey. Rather singular in smell. Some slight hints of banana, maybe some spice.

Taste: Overly sweet for the style, but still enjoyable. Some banana in the background, but nothing overly impressive.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, good carbonation despite the lack of head. Not bad...

Drinkability: An easy drinking, relatively mild brew. Nothing really stands out, but nothing is really offensive. I'd say a quality average beer. Decent, try it if its on tap.

A: Dull golden hue with minimal head and some lacing. Decent looking.

S: Pretty aromatic. One of the more pleasantly smelling beers I've had in awhile. Usually, the aroma of a beer is an afterthought. Not this one. Hints of apples and baked sugar cookies. Nice.

T: The aroma belies how uninspiring this beer is. Such a shame, it has such potential. Mild buttery sweetness, backed by an almost non-existent finish. Not bad, just dull. Missing something.

M: Again, uninspiring. Less than average carbonation, with virtually no finish of any sort. Each sip simply ends abruptly. Folks who dislike hoppy, sour or bitter beers might like this one. Since there isn't much to the flavor or mouthfeel, the drinkability is decent despite the moderate ABV.

D: Better than average. Not thick or heavy, and not cloyingly sweet, but close. Glad I tried it at least, and not as disappointed as I thought I would be after seeing how many reviewers gave this a mediocre rating.

Picked up a single at Nikki's in RI. Served in a tulip glass. Huge amount of carbonation noticed in the body, but no really head formed. There was a fizzy head for a few seconds, but that faded away quickly. Hazy yellow body. Smell had a yeasty, musty aroma, somewhat appealing. Taste was decent enough. Slight bit of lemon, hay, and wet grass. Mouthfeel was the opposite - not very good. Very thin and watery body up front then a sticky sweet finish on the palate. Drinkability was mediocre, as I split a small bottle with my wife, and I found a half glass was plenty. I would be more disappointed if I had purchased a larger bottle of this weak pale ale.
