No, Andy, I’ve never heard of it, but I can investigate in my spare time fleeting. So, this may surprise you but Flatbush was an absolute shit show the length from the Manhattan Bridge all the way out to 7th Ave. I know, shocker, right? And 7th Ave was pretty much a breeze, but then we drove right by the place ‘cause I wasn’t looking for a mountain of stacked pallets out front. We’ll get back to that, lemme grab a beer first...
Find the gate that gets you in, walk through the biergarten, and inside to the rear. A long, straight, stained stainless steel sheet topped bar on the back wall with a cinderblock base & piping foot rail; seating for a dozen and a half on hightop black leather chairs. A logo light box ‘T’ tower on the center of the bar and rounded piping towers to both sides. 24 taps in all with nondescript handles. Barback is a black countertop with another rounded piping tower on center, and a small events board above. Long horizontal mirrors to both sides fronting tiered booze. Framed shelving boxed up above the mirrors up to the ceiling with booze displayed. 3 door glass front coolers with bottled & canned selections, and shelved glassware below.
Large square boards mounted; weekly specials on one, and draft beer on the other (name, origin, ABV, & pricing). Small boards on the ends listing beer can pricing & coffee, food specials & hot drinks boards, and a ‘from the kitchen’ board (of the grill & fry, mostly; burgers, dogs, brats, fries, rings, wings, mac & chee, salad, chili, corn on the cob, and that’s about it).
Cinder block walls on 3 sides, black on the barback below the white backing of shelved boxes of booze above, and redfish on one end, exposed on the other end. The wall behind me of garage door paneled windows for the roll up. Must be cool in the warmer weather when those window walls are open. Concrete floorings, and I-beams running across the room above, below dark rafter ceilings with 3 skylights. Exposed ductwork, drop single bulbs caged running over the bar, and hanging bowl lamps over the floor. Flats angled in the corners, barside, and another on the far wall. Holiday wreathings, strung garland sprucings with wrapped baby lighting, stars of angle, and those potted red flowers whose name escapes me. 9 hightop tables with wood stools throughout the room, and a corner rounded half booth hugging a really cool fireplace piece on the far wall cutout into a massive pipe; it must get toasty there. Single stall bathrooms off the door with really cool fixtures.
It’s a nice easy day today; not too cold between storm and storm, so I went a-lookin’ around out front. A most amazing enclosure constructed from alt height stacked wood pallets with flower boxes atop, intermingled with mesh steel cagings 3 sides around, meaning the length of this shorty block between 19th to 20th streets and off their corners. It’s most unusual, and is apparently easy to miss if you’re driving by and don’t know what you’re looking for. Cement floors and baby rocks sectioned areas. 3 bocce courts on one end and an old storage unit converted into an outdoors bar on the other end. Nearly 3 dozen tables riddled about collectively, between the long narrow Radeberger tables, smaller rectangular ones, & the hightop bar counter blocks. It’s a very well manicured garden.
2 dozen beers on tap broken neatly into near 1/3’s; New York State craft (Kelso Pilsner, Brooklyn Winter Ale, Sixpoint Sweet Action, Captain Lawrence Liquid Gold, Blue Point Toasted Lager, Shmaltz Coney Island Lager, Ommegang Rare Vos), regional and other American craft (Smutty Winter Ale & Finest Kind IPA, Peak Organic Winter Session Ale, Narragansett Lager, Founders Breakfast Stout, Green Flash West Coast IPA, Lagunitas A Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’ Ale, Stone Smoked Porter, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale), and imports (Hofbrau Hefeweizen, Weihenstephaner Dunkel, Gaffel Kolsch, Radeberger Pils, Duvel, Hoegaarden, Stella, Guinness). I drank the Kelso Pilsner (Kelly, make more of this), and the Founders Breakfast Stout (served in a pint glass but not at happy hour pricing).
And just shy of 2 dozen bottles (Brooklyn Local 1, Local 2, & Sorachi Ace, Ommegang 3 Philosophers, Allagash Tripel, Alesmith Old Numbskull, Delirium Tremens, and a half dozen meh imports, macros & gluten frees), and cans (Oskar Blues Dales Pale Ale, Sixpoint The Crisp & Righteous Rye Ale, Brooklyn Lager, and a handful more meh).
The crowd a mix of neighborhood play from all directions. Not now, but in general. Kids, do not climb on the pallets. Parents… parent! Tunes, as they will. Lots of U2 & Coldplay, today. And we’ve discovered that Ed hates “Mad World” (and ‘Donnie Darko”, too). Good to know, yo. Did I mention the excellent outdoor space? Good beer selection and solid happy hour play.
