Tasting this year's version; label says bottled 5/10/2015. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Elizabeth Station in Bellingham. Dark brown with just a flicker of foam, though some suds roil up as you sip. A little coffee aroma, but it smells more like damp grounds.
The taste is dominated by the slightly sourish coffee note. There is nothing sweet or malty about this. Light body. Flavor flattens out to a dishwatery dry graininess. It seems unlikely that this is anywhere near 8.5%. I don't know what went wrong with this one.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing opaque in the glass, with a half finger brown head that dissipates to patches and a ring around the glass with slippery lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, brewed coffee, light chocolate. Flavor is dominated by coffee with dark toasted malt, light lactose, vanilla and a hint of chocolate. Finishes slightly acidic, with the coffee overtaking the malts a bit. Slight grassy hop bitterness in the finish. Medium bodied with light carbonation. Works as a good presentation of the Velton's coffee, with clear brewed coffee notes, the malt body is ok, but does not stand out on its own. The interplay between the dark malt, light malt and coffee are nice overall, but a bit more malt depth would have balanced things out better. Uneven, but good coffee stout.

Poured from 22oz bomber into a tulip. This is billed as an imperial coffee stout, and it's brewed with Velton's Twilight Blend coffee. Bottled 5/21/14.
Appearance: totally black with a finger of fizzy dark-tan foam without much retention. Color is great, head leaves something to be desired.
Smell: roasty and chocolatey with a good coffee character. There's a sweetness, but it's not cloying, so the overall mocha effect is quite good. I like it.
Taste: big coffee right up front, with a bit of a green quality. There's a fair bit of roastiness, but it finishes with a smoother milk-stout feel. Interesting to finish up so much more smoothly than it starts -- that first bit of coffee is a real kick. Not bad, but maybe could be a bit more refined.
Mouthfeel: medium-rich body with a good mouth-coating texture. Carbonation is decent, and creaminess is OK if a bit rocky, but the overall effect with that coating is quite good.
Overall: despite is roughness here and there, I find this to be quite enjoyable and drinkable despite its 8.5% ABV. You taste a lot of elements here, but alcohol isn't one of them.
