Bottle to pint. Let's see where this stacks up.

Pours brick-black with a tan cap of froth. Holds well, too.

Light aroma reveals dryness and light smoke, even, with notes of mocha and browned fruit. Interesting, but subdued.

Dry stout staleness with roasty malts offer hints of cocoa and instant coffee, but the wateriness uncovers some gritty astringency. Bitterness is surging with the level of carbonation, and there's not enough sweetness or flavor to balance it out. Mineral notes retain an earthiness. Hint of peat smoke is appealing, and I'm not entirely sure where it comes from. Unexpectedly fitting. Has an off-kilter hop profile (grassy/minty) that estranges me a little. Body is weak and missing chew.

After all this deliberation, it's honestly still an average Irish Stout. Quality of ingredients suffers a bit, but there's interesting complexity.

Pours to a ruby black color and off white permanent head and moderate lacing. Aroma is roasted barley/coffee, vanilla and toffee. Flavor is much of the same with a malty sweetness and a balancing bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium ad CO2 is just right. It is not exactly a dry stout but it is a good stout nonetheless.

Yet another of my local, in-person trader's many drop-offs. Many thanks, tone77! I always marvel at what you manage to latch onto.

From the bottle: "Brewed in the Irish Tradition"; "Estd. 1864"; "Manufactured Under License from Brasseries Pelforth, S.A."

My pour resulted in just over a finger of foamy, deep-tan head with good retention that slllooowwly fell, leaving some nice lacing in its wake. Color was a deep, dark-brown, allowing zero light penetration. Nose had a smoky, chocolaty quality. Mouthfeel was medium, but the taste was tending towards sweet chocolate, which would be inappropriate for the style. I have a Sweet/Milk Stout on-deck and this was too close to that style for comfort. Finish remained sweet, very chocolaty, which was not bad in and of itself, but not what I want in an Irish DRY Stout.

Bottle acquired earlier tonight at a L.A. area bottle shop. Best before July 15th, 2013. 12 fl oz brown glass bottle with generic label art and branded twist-off pressure cap served into a Mitchells of Lancaster flared stem-tulip in me gaff in low altitude Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California. Expectations are quite low given the brewery; I'm intimately familiar with this style having lived in Ireland for a year and I'm expecting a shite example of it.

Served cold, straight from the fridge, and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Side-poured with extra vigor as overcarbonation is expected and I don't want to dick around waiting for it to settle just right.

A: Pours a surprisingly decent head of one finger thickness and nice light tan colour. Maybe this won't be so bad after all. Decent cream, nice thickness, average (~2 minute) retention. Body colour is a solid dark black. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show. A decent appearance for the style, but not ideal.

Sm: Overly light malts. Some chocolate malt. Artificial coffee. No yeast character or alcohol comes through. No real roast. Generic floral hop character. A milky average strength aroma.

T: Milky with some surprisingly decent cream. A bland dark malt body. Chocolate malt. Very limited roast, if any. Lacks good balance, but I expected far worse. No yeast character or alcohol comes through. Built okay for the style. Misses the mark, but it's not as artificial as anticipated.

Mf: A bit milky, a bit creamy. Smooth and wet. Way too thin and weak. Lacks body. Poor thickness. Overcarbonated. Bad to okay presence on the palate. Doesn't really suit the flavour profile - and it's completely wrong for the style, which demands dryness and coarseness.

Dr: A mediocre example of the style which I wouldn't bother with again. That said, it's better than you'd expect given the brewery. Really not a poor beer per se, but certainly not worth recommending to friends. It's surprisingly drinkable, but still has its flaws. Great value. I think many reviewers are coming down hard on this one just because of the brewery; it'd fare far better in blind tastings.

C+

12oz bottle, pours black with ruby hues when held to a light, foamy tan head sticks around for a while. Aromas are similar to tastes: roasted barley, chocolate, creamed coffee, finishes slightly dry. Medium bodied and smooth. Overall, nothing wrong with this Irish stout, but nothing special about it either.

I had this a few weeks ago, and I hated it. I figured it was because I already had a few beers in me at the time, so I decided to try it again yesterday, nothing changed.

A: Pitch Black, looks almost like a Guinness, which is promising.

S: Malty, earthy, coffee like, so far so good, not overpowering either.

T: This is where everything goes south. Wayyy too strong and over powering for my liking, extra bitter and just coffee like. Its like drinking the strongest coffee ever brewed, but in beer form.

M: Super heavy in the mouth, not only that, but it also didn't sit well in my stomach. I felt like crap after drinking it, made be slightly ill on both occasions that i tried it

O: Not my cup of tea. When I have trouble drinking a beer, then you know there is a problem. Tried to give the rest of the six pack away, but everyone who tried it didn't like it. Ended up putting it in an elevator.

If I'm looking for an Irish Stout, I'm gonna get Guinness. It's a shame too cuz I like George Killian's Red Ale fine. This one didn't do it for me, if you like overly strong and heavy beer that doesn't sit well in ur stomach, then go right ahead, but I'm gonna pass.

The beer pours a pitch black color with a thick frothy tan head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is decent. It has a thin, earthy, black malt scent that's bone dry and bitter and so good. The taste is decent as well. Again, it has a bone dry, black malt flavor. It's pretty one sided and lacks any real complexity, but it drinks fantastic. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a medium/full bodied beer with adequate/good carbonation. This is a very accessible Irish stout that great for those who want something a little lighter than Guiness.
