Brewed with the finest imported German malts and hops, using traditional German brewing techniques, the Texas Backyard Blonde Ale is inspired by the hoppy golden kolsch ales of Cologne. More complex than your average blonde, bready, biscuity malt flavors combine with ample grassy, spicy hops and fruity esters in a crisp, refreshing brew, perfect for steamy Texas days.

This pours a cloudy blonde as the label describes. The beer is exceptionally effervescent and has a fast building head that last and last as if it will never go away. The head settles slow leaving foam reminiscent of sliced bread. The lacing is decent but is drawn down with the thickness of the head as well.

The nose is a bit in the funky side and has some sour notes to it as if it were wild yeast. There is also some citrus, floral and hops.

The taste is refreshing and malty with the tiniest hints of some sourness that has notes of bread, citrus and subtle bitterness of the hops.

The moutfeel is rich and and more than expected for the beers other attributes.

Overall a rather drinkable beer that ia greater than the sum of it's parts. No one characteristic is exceptional or actually good that combine to make a rather drinkable and good beer.

Backyard Blonde pours to a golden/straw color with a nose that presents toasted malt, spice, and some fruity notes. The nose is not what you normally would expect in a blonde beer and it does pique your curiosity to take a sip.

This beer offers flavors such as biscuit- like malts, toasted notes, light spice, and some grassy flavors from the hops. Grainy flavors dominate, but the added spice and grassy notes keep things interesting. The body of the beer is lighter, as expected for the style, and the beer is easier drinking than most other craft beer.

Backyard Blonde is a good beer when you want something a little more refreshing and more acceptable to a larger cross- section of the population. I find the bottled version- the version I am using for this review- more complex and interesting than the draft, but then again, the draft version is smoother and easier- drinking. It really is a matter of preference as to which one you will like better.

All in all, this is a good beer when you want something a little more refreshing and a little more complex than the average blonde. Brunettes are still my preference, but an occasional deviation from my preferred style is welcome and Backyard Blonde is a good beer for those times when you don’t want to think or analyze too much, but just want a good, likeable beer to fulfill your malt beverage needs.

On tap at SL Flying Saucer

A: The lace recedes quickly. Good color.
S: Nice toasted malts, little finish.
T: Very grainy.
M/D: Good carbonation, needs better balance for sweet blonde, though.
Notes: Had a free pint, and the Saucer servers have great beer knowledge, just pushing this FB brewery too hard. Have the Southern Star Blond if you're new to the area.

On tap at Down House in Houston, TX

A: Pours a clear golden/yellow color. At first a two finger white head forms, and recedes to a ring. Light lace.
S: Toasted malts, with a light sweetness. Cereal grains, and not much else. Very neutral and middle of the road.
T: Again, light toasted malts and sweetness. Grainy flavors take over. Light diacetyl as this warms. Again just very neutral and inoffensive
M/D: A light body, just a but to light for me. Good carbonation that is crisp and effervescent. Not hard to drink. Something to quaff if in the mood.

Overall, I understand what they are trying to do. Making an easy to drink beer for the masses, and one that might convert a few along the way. Though I have still had better from a Texas brewery in the same style. Like Southern Star Blond, and Real Ale Fireman's 4.
