On Tap
Churchill's Pub & Grille
San Marcos, CA
Hazed golden with a moderately-sized near-white head. Leaves irregular dots and sheets of stick down the glass.
Tropical and citrus character in the aroma, along with some definite sweetness, and a bit of pine.
Big bitterness throughout complemented by tropical and citrus notes, and a bit of sweet bread. Some alcohol presence.
Medium bodied with moderate-high carbonation.
Fairly bitter and a bit of an alcohol kick, but a better than average DIPA.

This impressive DIPA packs quite the punch with its depth of character, silky good looks, and drinkability. It's plenty viscous and dense without being too syrupy, and the tropical notes and toffee-like sweetness offer a nice balance to the more bitter hop forward qualities.

Appearance is burnt orange/honey color with about 2 fingers of creamy, fluffy white head. Smell is mainly your typical big citrus/grapefruit with maybe a touch of tropical fruits, apricot and peach. There is a slight malty backbone in there somewhere. Not quite as potent and in-your-face as I was expecting. Taste is much the same...pine and citrus upfront followed by extreme bitterness on the back end. There is a touch of malty sweetness that tries to counteract that astringent bitterness but the bitterness wins out. This was probably the creamiest head I've ever had on a double IPA...great carbonation and mouthfeel and the ABV is nowhere to be found. Overall this was a very drinkable DIPA that has me pretty excited to try their other stuff.

First double IPA from this new brewery. For their first shot at a massive hoppy san-diego style IPA, it's very impressive! Pours a pale hazy (due to hops) yellow with a nice white head. Major hop nose with massive hops to back this up. Definetly unbalanced in the best way possible. East Coast IPA lovers will not care for it.
I want to rate it higher, and will probably do so on subsequent batches as they dial it in even more. 1st brew and a serious in-park home run... Alcohol is very well hidden for a 9.5% beer. This beer is a solid A, and will be an A+ on subsequent batches!
Had another pint Thursday after my final. Massive tropical hop notes that I didn't pick up the first time. I believe the hops are simcoe, citra and Columbus and its damn tasty!!!
