pours out of the half litre bottle a nearly opaque crimson/ruby hue with a thin tight tan head. lots of festive lace. sweet malty aroma; molasses and fruitcake come to mind...pretty nice. euro flavours of light chocolate and caramel, with hints of berries and cream. some smoky, dark roasted coffee notes finished with noble hops. all very subdued and laid back. the mouthfeel starts with a carbonated note immediately followed by some silky smoothness. it slides down easy. the body is fullish for a dark lager...quite satisfying. drinkability is good...i could down a few.

overall a nice dark lager from austria.

L: large khaki head and black body with red edges
S: faint molasses, yeast, charcoal, and cream
T: coffee and bread
F: excellent carbonation

Very similar to Kostritzer Schwarzbier, but made to a higher, fresher standard. Very good schwarzbier / black lager.

On tap at The Map Room in Chicago, IL.

This one pours a darkish brown color, with a small white head, and lots of lacing.

This smells like toasted bready malt, cocoa powder, roast, and slight nuttiness.

This feels pretty much spot on for the style, with a wonderful creamy malt character, and very little hop character of any kind. There's almost a pecan like flavor, with bittersweet chocolate, and loads of bready malt goodness.

This is very creamy, and very drinkable, with a wonderfully smooth finish.

I could drink dunkel all day.

On draft at Kaiser Tiger [Chicago] into 1L krug.

Pours a dark brown with a thick white head. Medium body, full malt profile, well balanced as to be not too sweet. Easy drinking, and not boozy at all.

Absolutely delicious, yet with a fine tuned amount of not too robust chocolaty undertones. I think I could drink this all day and night and will attempt at this any given time.

Had on draft 7/31/21 @ Hopleaf.

Mostly opaque dark brown appearance, with a but of orange at the edges.

Small khaki head; strong lace.

Creamy, medium mouthfeel.

The nose & flavor was medium roast coffee, mild cream & faint hop bite. A very well made beer!

Hirter Morchl is a dark, deep, leathery brown. It's amost deep enough to look like a porter. The head is dense, cream colored, and lasting.
Very malt forward aroma. It smells like fresh baked loaves of dark rye and pumpkernickel breads. The nose is also slightly toasted and fairly sweet. Earthiness, nuts, and leather give the aroma depth and structure. Sweetness reminds me of the lactose sweetness in milk stouts, only more of a malted milk sort of profile. Aroma finishes soft and dry.
Mouthfeel is full side of medium with a prominent, up front sweetness. Other flavors are very rich in their maltiness, giving the same fresh baked rye and pumpernickel I found in the nose. The center reinforces the up front sweetness with flavors of ripe dates. Hints of leather and earth give a too brief balance to the beer's overall sweetness.
I'm having a hard time liking this as much as everyone else seems to. My main point of contention is the slick, rounded mouthfeel which is almost porter or stout-like in nature. Dark lager or not, this kind of throws me off a bit. Also, I'm having trouble getting past the beer's up front milk sweetness. Maybe my palate just needs to be more educated.
