Ah, weekday mid afternoon drinking. In Brooklyn, with Ben, who is off this Thanksgiving week. I would have arrived on time, but that stupid muni meter was down and then I foolishly entered that door covered with a Paulaner Octoberfest banner and ascended stairs to find construction workers not drinking German beer. WTF? I mean, it was located directly below their exterior sign so why wouldn’t I reasonably, oh, forget it...
Seating for a dozen and a half stooled on a wood plank topped bar with a panel base running a ‘U’ around the underside of a stairwell. A rounded piece sits stuffed in there below with some cooler space, and there’s some booze countered and tiered above. The bar is strangely subway tile lined on the inside.
Frontside is a wall of narrow vertical windows over Court Street and wrapping slightly onto side street Sackett brick wall play. Big brick to the rear, too, with a pair of arches cut in looking in on South Brooklyn pizza and their kitchenings through framed window pieces, sills & shelves holding jarred this and that (Apparently you can enter through the side side and deal pizza directly). And the far wall just off the door done in pressed tin, a little bit of everything. Wood slat floorings and pressed tin ceiling with crown moldings throughout; worn, bowed, dinged, and paint a-peeling, and some pale green pieces, too. Drop single bulbs lighting, some mounted candle bulbs on the arch of yesterday, and some wagon wheel lamps, but they get their best light off that row of windows up front. Not much overkill to the décor; a pyramid mirror here, a framed logo piece there.
There’s an arch in the middle of the room to the seating side; I’m pretty sure it’s from that Star Trek episode where Bones accidentally overdoses on cordrazine, goes temporarily insane, runs through that portal to the past, and fucks everything up. Yes, the one with a young hot Joan Collins (‘The city on the edge of forever’). It sits seemingly out of place and yes, I will say it, time.
A single table sits sad in the front windows off the doorway. Shorty hightops around the bend forward the bar and sharing common benchage, plus another one to the rear, and a strange bar counter jut off on the kitchen openings that I believe sits over a stairwell to down, ‘cause people keep disappearing there. In the seating area, a pair of long banquet tables down center, 3 shortys up front, and 2 in betweeners to the rear side.
And there’s a basement space, their Ratskeller. Great brick play, with arched throughways & candle lit cuts, and some stone. White painted ceiling with rafters, drop spots, mounted lamps and candle lighting. Hightop bar tables, benches, corner cushy chairs, and a shared banquet table. They’ve got a little bar down there, too. It’s cool.
Ceramic blue ornate towers holding 8 taps each on opposite sides of the bar; 16 taps in all (Einbecker Brauherren Pilsner, Radeberger Pilsner, Stiegl Pilsner, Arcobrau Zwickl Lager, Gaffel Kolsch, Hofbrau Original, Hacker-Pschorr Munich Gold, Paulaner Salvator Doppel Bock, Franziskaner Dunkelweizen, Paulaner Hefe-Weizen, Weihenstephaner Kristall Weissbier, Schneider Weisse, Spaten Oktoberfestbier, Hofbrau Oktoberfestbier, Paulaner Oktoberfest-Marzen, Erdinger Oktoberfest Weissebier), the list carved out by style with a few words describing, and pricing for .3, .5, & 1L servings. I drank the Arcobrau Zwickl Lager, Hacker-Pschorr Munich Gold, & Franziskaner Dunkelweizen.
Also, 10 bottles & cans (Dab Original, Kostritzer Schwarzbier, Schlenkerla Helles, Augustiner Brau Pils & Brau Weissbier, Stiegl Pils, Hofbrau Muncher Weisse, Schneider Aventinus Weizenbock, plus oddball Italian beer AMA Bionda Golden Ale, and a single cider from Doc’s).
No, Ben, I have not yet fooded today. Yes, perhaps we should, perhaps we should. I had a most beautiful pretzel; it came with some sort of beer cheese. Bacon, scallion, cream cheese, all, none, don’t know; I just used the mustard, which was real good. Ben had a spinach & cheese dumpling in a mushroom sauce. He said it was ‘fucking delicious’, and added ‘that he was not going to lie’, and then qualified that with ‘because I wouldn’t lie to you’ (Of course he wouldn’t and I wouldn’t think he would, which makes me wonder why he would mention it at all. I will try not to dwell on this).
We caught the place mid afternoon so I didn’t get to see much of the crowd and scene, but it works. I must admit that the pizza thing seems a bit odd, but like I said, you can access it through a side door for the quick in & out. I like the multiple serving sizes for all beers, and the happy hour 2 for 1 on .5 litre drafts is the best deal in town.
