This place is cool with a fun atmosphere. Draft selection is ok and they have a lot of bottles. More of an English/international heavy selection, which can be nice. Bar food, but decent bar food. Worth going, but not worth going too far out of the way for.

I love this place. From Indiana originally and surprised by the quantity of regional and international beers on tap and available by bottle. The selection is huge and the atmosphere is grand and inviting. Service could be improved but it is mostly because they stay so busy. I haven't been to many tasting rooms or bars since I moved to WA, but none I have seen live up to this place.

I've been down here a few times. Their beer selection always changes and there's always about 16 to 20 beers on tap. Most of the stuff on tap is hand-picked and difficult to find in Indiana. It's worth coming here if you're in an adventurous mood for beer sipping. The service is adequate and the people seem nice enough. I rarely pull up a booth and generally find a bar stool to hunker down in. I'll usually have about 3 or 4 pints before heading home. The price for the beers is not competitive, but about what you'd expect for a good selection and fresh rotating taps.

A: Located on the Southside. This is an old-time restaurant and brew house. Dark lighting and dark wood around the bar give it a quaint feel. Kind of reminds me of a 'chain' restaurant bar, but not quite.

Q: The beers were fresh, for the large amount of brews on tap and in bottles, the beers were fresh.

Ser: The service was just fine. Fast and dependable. Nothing exceptional, nothing bad.

Sel: While you will not find those 'whales' there is a selection that is very vast. Over 21 countries, 40 brews on tap and countless amounts of bottled brews. Founders, Left Hand, Goose Island, Avery, Hoppin Frog, Dogfish, Bells...etc. A selection to please any beer enthusiast.

F: Standard pub grub. Nothing spectacular but it is more than adequate.

O: An affordable place with a pretty dynamic selection for Indy. If you need a diverse slection of brews, stop in here for sure.

A: Completely wood-grain interior gives the feel of an old time saloon. Bar is J-shaped, located in the middle of the restaurant. Upper level balcony adds additional seating capacity.

Q: Beer has always been of the highest quality. Food is good and of the pub grub variety.

S: Friendly service that is knowledgable and attentive.

S: Phenominal selection. Tons of bottles and a nice tap selection.

F: Food is good, but simple. Everything I have had here is tasty.

V: I think everything is pretty reasonably priced. There may be a markup on bottles, but this is to be expected and is nothing outrageous. There are a few nights with tap specials. Food is reasonably priced.

Atmosphere- is pretty good I love all of the old taps they having all over the bar, but it is sometimes a little smokey if it's busy.

Service - To me it seems that there really is only one guy that knows anything about beer and its the guy with the beard (I cant think of his name) he is really cool and doesn't mind talking beer with you. I one thing I don't like about this place is that they don't have prices listed anywhere. Its like yes I want a Stone RIS, but then you find out is $15 then I will have to pass.

Selection - is pretty impressive they have a lot of bottles, I would like to see more specialty taps but I understand that as a bar to make money you have to have your BMC products for the average customer.

Food is good, when I go I always get the steak sandwich or the Cajuan burger.

great beer selection, fish and chips while not greasy were portioned fairly small, service was good but then I got the check..$8 a beer?!?!?! not like we were drinking anything outrageous... a bottle of Founders Breakfast Stout and a draft Hoptimus for me and a draft Upland Dragonfly for the wife

Its a shame because the place had decent atmosphere but I can get a Dragonfly for $7.50 at Lucas Oil Stadium during a Colts game

hopefully this is not the direction of craft beer bars in the Indy area but it seems as the popularity of craft beer is exploding exponentially so are the prices

stopped in for first time in 15 years. nice looking place. antique bar. but that's where the positive comments end.

bathroom: strong smell of stale urine. ridiculous.

service: slow. indifferent at best, rude at worst.

beer on tap: 40 average beers - sheesh - 40 taps and nothing particularly special ?

bottles: many many bottles - maybe 200 or 300 or so. nice selection I suppose - still have bells oracle and also have FFF poppaskull.

cost: 8$ for a pint of Brooklyn black chocolate stout - really ?

see you in another 15 years.

In town visiting friends and family and needed a good beer bar to visit while in town. JAYBLACK reccomended this place.

When we first pulled up to this place, nearly hidden in a half empty strip mall, I was a bit unsure whether this was a hidden gem or just a hole in the wall. The atmoshpere was quite warm and inviting. Lots of dark wood with empty beer bottles and tap handles lining the walls.

We sat at the bar, so the service seemed pretty good. We never found ourselves with an empty glass without being asked if we were ready for another round. The bartender seemed fairly knowlegable about the 40 or so beers they had on tap. The only downside was that the bartender seemed to struggle with a good pour, I think as much beer was overflow as made it into our glasses.

The selection is terrific. Like I mentioned before there are around 40 beers on tap, and many times more than that in bottles.

The prices seemed to be on par with most other places, and they had several beers on "special" for around $3.50 a pint. Overall a good place, I will probably visit again when I am in Indy next.

Strange and unexpected place. A half vacant strip mall is the last place i'd think to find a legitimate beer bar. Even with gps it was hard to find this place. Finally found it wedged in between an "Old Tyme Pottery" store and a large vacant mall space with the sign letters torn off.

Inside, it felt like a British pub, lots of wood and narrow passages. The bar was to the right, elevated and through a small vestibule area. Lots of tv's playing the Final Four games, we cheered on Butler here. It had an authentic air though, betraying the strip mall locale. Lots of antique signs, and vintage tap handles lining the walls around the bar.

Selection was the best i've seen in Indy, plenty of gems on the bottle list like Bells 9000, Nemesis, and Hardys. A couple dedicated Stone taps on the wall, in between the coolers. Arrogant Bastard and the Oaked version. Almost 10 FFF varieties in bottles + taps. We didn't linger too long, but from what I gathered this was a unique bar with a superior selection of beers.

I'd stop here again, it's close enough to Parti-Pak to warrant another visit.

This place is great. Huge selection of taps plus bottles. I had Arrogant Bastard on Draft. NICE. Service was a little strained but it was a Sat. night so what do you expect. Our server was very nice and actually very knowledgeable about what they had. The food was typical pub grub but the portions were good size and I'm a big eater so that was nice. They have a few TV's but the attraction is the beer and the scavenger hunt. The bartenders are very nice and patient with newbies so don't be afraid to take your BMC friends. One of my favorites.

Okay. I was a skeptic at first. Really, a strip mall bar. From my experience, most strip mall bars are pretty much all the same. You cannot judge a book by its cover. A coworker told me I had to check the place out.

When you walk in there is a big glass case with hundreds of beer bottles from different eras and all over the world. The place looks completely different on the inside from what I thought it would look like. Lots of ornate woodworking and a very nice bar like atmosphere. The beer list is tremendous. I was there to try some stouts. The server really enjoyed talking about beer, big plus. He recommended a few things and he brought me some samples. I could potentially spend all week at this place, if it wouldn't kill me. The food was good, not great, but I can overlook that.

If you are a beer lover and live in Indy, check it out.

This is where my love for craft beer began. Shallo's is tucked away in a strip mall. One may never think to stop in by glance, but it is well worth the visit! The decor is very charming and the beer selection is awesome. If they do not have something you want or are looking for Doug is willing to try to get it in for you if he can. Now that is great service! Also the wait staff is extremely helfpul and will guide you in your beer selection. I can not say enough great things about this place.
The only 2 issues I have with this place is it is family friendly so you could be trying to enjoy some great craft beers with crying toddlers right behind you and it closes early so plan to get scooted out by 1am!

This place is a diamond in the rough. You would not expect this selection and knowledgeable staff in a south side bar. I love this pub. Good food. Try the tenderloin and homemade potato chips. Plenty of seating. Great old fashioned bar. Lots of craft brews on tap. Many more bottled. Imports galore. Always fresh. Lots of vintage beer finds. Good TV screens for viewing the game. Negatives: The neighborhood does not support the style. There no surrounding nightlife, consequently no walk up business. It 's in a low budget strip mall. I love this pub. Never had a bad experience. Wish it was in Brownsburg.

Hey everybody! New to BA, not new to Shallo's. Shallo's is one of my most favorite bars in the world. And, I can say that because I travel all over the world for my job! That is because of one of the friendliest staffs and largest beer selections around! The beer selection is wonderful, and if they don't have a beer, more than likely it's not available for purchase around here. If you are looking to have a nice meal, grab a table! If you wanna talk beer, grab a stool at the bar and yuck it up with any of the bar tenders and/or the owner! Yes, the waitresses aren't as knowledgeable as they could be about the beer selection, they are always nice!
The only thing I would add to this place is a better food menu (preferably with beer infused cuisine)! They even have a beer tasting every once in a while which I think cost around $15-$20 pp, although I could be wrong.

For the Southside Indianapolis this place is a life saver. I used to work right down the street form there and it was a welcome place for lunch and after work brews. Service is pretty good. Food is mediocre but not so bad if its considered bar vittles. Try on an order of fried mac and cheese. Its my favorite. I've tried some good beers here and had some good times with my friends. You should stop by if you want a good brew ha ha. Prices are reasonable compared to what I've paid for good brew at other establishments. Drink away.

I stopped in around 9pm on a Wednesday night while in town on business. I grew up on the eastside of Indianapolis and always joked with my south side friends about the "diversity" of the south side. Nothing wrong with this side of town, just a bit more redneck and blue collar than the uppity north side of Indy. I kept this in mind as I approached Shallo's which in one of the most underwhelming strip malls around. Once you get inside, it gets much better. Nice vintage decor and a cozy atmospehre with lots of HD TVs.

I sat at the bar and people around me were mostly drinking mixed drinks. I went for a Weihenstephan, Breck 471 IPA, and St. Bernardus 12 all on draft. The bartender confirmed I would like a very hoppy beer (471) and was willing to pay $8 for what turned out to be a very generous pour of ice-cold St. B 12. One downfall was the printed bottle and tap list was very out of date. I had to rethink my orders a couple of times because option 1 was not available. Otherwise, I have a hard time arguing about their claim to have the best and largest beer selection in the Midwest (I told the bartended a couple of places in Chicago, Map Room and Hop Leaf, were better because of their specialty Belgian and access to beers not available in IN). Dark Horse was on the website but the bartended told me it didn't sell well so they dropped it. Other than that, they have most of the available US micro's on tap or in bottle. The tap list was impressive and if this was the place my co-workers regularly chose as happy hour over some lame Irish pub, I'd be ecstatic.

I always get the breaded tenderloin sandwich when in Indiana and Shallo's offering was very good. Not as meaty and tender as I like, but it hit the spot.

Towards the end of the night I got into an animated discussion with some guy who came in with his 21 year old son. They were doing the "beers around the world" club and he was boasting that it's not really beers around the world. He asked if son if he knew why and then proceeded to ask me. I had no clue what he was talking about and assumed it had something to do with beers tasting better in Europe. It turns out Coors had brainwashed him into thinking all beer needed to be pasteurized and therefore always refrigerated. He claimed that all European beers were made in the US because they could not ship them cold to the US. He took a military tour of Europe where he claimed to drink all the great beers of Europe and therefore was a subject matter expert. When he told me my St. Bernadus 12 was brewed in the USA, I could only smile and say that was not true. Earlier in the night I told the bartender how much beer traveling I do so she backed me up but really couldn't offer a definitive answer.

This is one of my regular hangouts. Times must have changed from the lower review because I don't get frosted glasses there. The wings are amazing. I'd say the second best around here. The beer selection is outstanding. I think it's something like forty beers on tap plus a wide variety out of the bottle. They almost always have Bell's Hell Hath No Fury, which is my absolute favorite beer, on tap. That's year round. You get more knowledgable advice if you sit at the bar. On Sunday's just tell the blonde girl what you like and she'll find something you like better. On the southside, if you are a beer lover, this is THE place to go.

Update: They no longer have Hell Hath No Fury. It makes me sad all day.

I decided to stop by this place on the recommendation of a coworker. It is tucked away in a strip mall on the south side of town about a 15 minute drive from downtown and easily missed if you aren't looking for it. Good neighborly atmosphere with various beers stored behind glass set into the walls.

Beer selection was pretty impressive - Arrogant Bastard, Bell's 2 Hearted and Franziskaner Hefe-Weisse Dunkel (a dunkel-weizen in Central Indiana?) on tap, among others.

I had the "Shallo Burger" and a 3 Floyd's Gumballhead 22oz bomber. The burger was decent and the beer was in good condition. BA's beware, though, frosted glasses are the norm...luckily I did not order a draft and was able to get another glass.

Service was curteous, though not entirely knowledgable about the beer selection. To her credit, the waitress did say my Gumballhead smelled delicious. I would go back to sit at the bar for a few hours.

Thankfully introduced to this place by fellow BA qarre. I really enjoyed the atmosphere of this place. Beer bottles lining the back wall near where I set, lots of wood decore and a nice looking bar. I believe what makes Shallo's so special is selection. They have an extensive beer menu although you always need to have a backup in mind as the printed menu doesn't always reflect what's available, but it's easy to have 5 backup beers in this place that you won't be dissapointed with. Service seemed decent enough with the waitress electing to let us pour our own, not really sure she would've been able to help pick a brew out though. I will definately be back here, it'd be very easy to pass a few hours trying new things.

checked this place out for the next Indy BA gathering. A southside Indianapolis secret known for their swamp sauce, skinny french fries, and lots of bottled beers. 40 beers on tap with a few regionals Bell's, Upland, Three Floyd's, and a few domestic imports, 250 or so beers in the coolers. All well kept. Lots of antiques and other stuff laying around to gawk at. The walls all around the place are lined with various tap handles. A very comfortable place. We didn't sample any of the food, but sat at the bar and tried out a few beers. Very nice selection, if you can't find something here to drink then your probably dead. As a test I ordered a Aventinus. If you can correctly pour one of these, you belong behind a bar. Our server not only knew what he was doing, he explained what he was doing to another server, and why! Definetly worth the trip!

When a friend of mine told me about Shallo's, I was terribly exicted... they boast somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 beers on tap, and a selection of more than 500. There aren't too many places in Indianapolis with that kind of beer selection. We went there on a Friday evening for dinner... my wife, 4 other friends, and myself.

The atmosphere is quite good... dark and decorated with antiques, beer tap handles, and bottles.

Their beer menu is very good... probably more like 200 bottles, and 40 tap choices... a few regionals (Bell's, Upland, Three Floyd's,) quite a few domestic imports, a good selection of Belgian, German, and English beers. I was kind of dissapointed with the fact that their menu was very out of date... they listed quite a few beers that they no longer carry.

The service was quite bad... first of all, all beers were served with CHILLED GLASSES! I mean... this is a beer bar right? Our server also knew nothing about the beers he was serving... even reccommending a Lienenkugel Northwoods Lager to someone who was asking for something similar to a porter.

The food was mixed... by all accounts the steaks were unimpressive... but the other food was decent. The swamp sauce was quite good.

Overall, I was disappointed with Shallo's... even with one of the best selections of beer in Indianapolis, they continually disappointed me with all the details that go into the beer drinking experience.
