This came in a sampler pack with 3 other types of Dundee brews. Overall, I was very pleased with this stout. The color was very true to form: dark and lovely. The head was not very tall and disappeared after a couple of minutes. The nose was malty and somewhat sweet, but not overly expressive. The taste was very good, though, and this beer stands up well next to stouts that cost a lot more money. I tasted lots of sweet malt, with a little coffee and nicely balanced hops in the background. This is an easy-drinking stout that is worth checking out.

To me, Dundee is always at least solid and produces a full lineup of above-average, but not better, beers.

Black but with a certain clarity to it, this stout showcases some brighter brown highlights. It actually seems just from looking at it to be thin, appearing more like a schwarzbier than a stout; there's just not much viscosity. The tan head doesn't quite reach one finger, though it comes close, and retention is pretty good. Some spotting and lacing is managed.
The aroma and flavor are consistently in accord and give up some cocoa, roast, coffee, dark fruits and char, a bit on the thin side overall. It's fairly standard stuff, malt-forward as it should be, with little to offend.
The body is about medium, light for a stout, and thin. It needs more body and to move away from crispness and toward smoothness.

poured from the bottle into a pint glass

A - Pours a used motor oil black with deep garnet highlights. Streams of tiny bubbles rush to the two-finger, creamy, tan head. Head stays intact all the way down the glass and leaves behind decent lacing.

S - Nice nose of dark molasses and toffee on a firm chocolate malt backbone upon opening the bottle. Subdued somewhat once in the glass.

T - Dark fruits and chocolate malt upfront. The body is a delicious blend of moderately dark chocolate, current, and slightly overripe date with just a slight tinge of hop bitterness. A splash of hops and plenty of dark fruit as the beer passes over the back of the tongue smoothly fades into a dark chocolate and date finish.

M - Medium-heavy bodied and delightfully creamy thanks to the moderately high levels of carbonation.

As advertised, this stout is a dark and highly drinkable brew, aided in the later by a relatively low hop content and heaviness compared to other examples of the style. Of course these traits also make it come off slightly watered down as well, but I'd rather not nitpick too much on what is a seasonable, tasty, yet cheap stout. Well done Dundee, yet another beer a would delightfully have again!

undated 12 oz bottle from a Dundee "Seasonal Variety Pack" served in a goblet.
Pours very dark brown and clear, with a moderate size, short-lived tan head. There is a lasting ring and partial top coat, however, as well as rather good lacing left on the glass with each tip.

M: medium creamy body feels a bit thin; good medium-light carbonation.
Aroma: near equal mix of hops and malts: surprising for style. Esters suggest an ABV higher than 5.8%.
T: Adequate hops to produce good sweet/bitter balance, although dark roasted malt dominates the taste.

O: decent if relatively weak American stout.

That little guy sure can lift, eh? Anyway, this stuff pours a dark mahogany topped by a finger of dirty khaki foam. The nose comprises lightly-roasted malts, light maple syrup, and a bit of toasted biscuit. The taste holds notes of mildly-perfume-y cocoa powder, watered-down coffee, and a few drops of molasses. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a fluid feel. Overall, this stuff is too thin, too weak, and too fluffy for me to really enjoy as a stout. There are Irish stouts on nitro that look like motor oil compared to this stuff. I'll pass, thank you.

"Let's say you up and decide to throw a wooden barrel of ale in a public display of manliness. (I know, just go with it.) How then to celebrate? Hint: You're holding the answer. That's right, a Dundee Stout. 'Stout' is, after all, what brewers have been calling the darkest, heaviest and 'burliest' of all their ales since 18th century England. That said, ours is sweet, creamy and ironically, pretty light in texture. So maybe the tough part's not lifting it after all. The tough part's putting it down once you have. Go figure." Dundee Stout is brewed in the style of an American Stout. Available as part of the constantly rotating Dundee variety pack.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to a pint glass. Served north of 52º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a foamy light brown head that thickens as it recedes. Retention is average. Body color is a dark brown with dark ruby highlights. Head quality was decent and lacing was thin and spotty. A decent, if not fully substantial appearance for a stout. 3.25

(Smell) Contains chocolate malt, medium roasted caramel, dark wheat malt, and little black patent malt. Slightly sweet aroma, hints of cream and milk chocolate in places. Very subtle hints of dark fruit. Mild earthy bitterness. Aroma is overall closely balanced and relatively clean. Potency is medium. Not as deep and complex as most stouts are but still a very decent aroma overall. 3.75

(Taste) Light flavor. Biscuity chocolate malt front follows through to a clean, semi-dry chocolate finish with a touch of black malt bitterness and a puff of alcohol. A bit dry in places, could use a little more sweetness throughout to achieve an optimum balance. Bitterness, part black malt bitterness, part earthy hop, is a welcome addition to the balance. A very clean and light-flavored American Stout, high on drinkability but certainly limited in flavor diversity and depth. That label sure wasn't lying. 3.25

(Mouthfeel) Clean, slick texture with a little carbonation presence on the front of the tongue. Finish is dry and a bit chalky. Body is light for American Stouts, medium amongst all beers. Alcohol presence is light. Could be much more drinkable with some residual sweetness and a touch more body would have it drinking less like a Schwarzbier and more like the robust stout it should be. Malt notes, like oatmeal or wheat could certainly add more depth to the body and give this a much thicker, smoother and heavier-bodied mouthfeel. 3

(Overall) I found the label nearly honest by its description. Dundee's Stout is overall a decent-drinking beer. When it falls under the harsh scrutiny of a stout connoisseur, however, there is almost always room for improvement. The balance wasn't terribly off but a heightened sweetness would remedy even the most minute issues in that department. Some heightened body, perhaps with a touch of oats, would improve flavor diversity and thicken the body. One thing it does have going for it is drinkability. While far from the most robust of all stouts, one could be sure to enjoy a few of these without turning in early for the night. And that makes this a decent choice for a lightly-flavored stout. 3.5
