Formerly Genesee Bock Beer

Our take on the 16th century German legend has turned out to be a legend in its own right. For every spring since 1951, our brewery has carefully crafted and lagered Genesee Bock Beer. The result is an exceptionally hearty, full-flavored beer with a slight malty finish—and a perfect way to celebrate the snow melt.

Look: Poured 12 oz. can into pint glass. Big foam head which disappears quickly to almost nothing. Nice black reddish hazy color.

Smell: Good mixture of chocolate, sweet malts and hops.

Taste: Same mixture of chocolate, sweet malts and faint hops.

Mouthfeel: Nothing really sticks around your mouth for too long, and it is a dry taste that finishes.

Drinkability: Going into reviewing this beer, not knowing anything about this beer and paying only $6.29, I am really pleased with this beer. Anyway the drinkability is surprisingly smooth, but not creamy like I like in my bocks. Still if you're in Northern Wisconsin pick some up cheap!

The first I had from the six-pack, I quite liked. On the second, I am noticing a few things I either missed or ignored. Nice, clear medium to dark amber with a nice head. The nose and taste do have a toasted malt flavor to them, with some brown sugar dusted crusted bread. I seemed focused on this before, but on the taste I am now getting a little more fruitiness and an extra refined sugar-like sweetness. It's not strong, but does detract slightly from the more bread-like malt notes I am getting. The nose has held up to previous scrutiny better than the taste save for the mineral /metallic note that is more up front than in the taste. A little light and maybe just a tad flat, but pretty easy drinking with flavors a little more interesting than a pale lager.

Hello fellow beer drinkers. I look forward every year for the release of Genny Spring Bock! This beer taste great for a relatively light beer at 5.2%. Super smooth, very flavorful and less than $20 a case! Give it a try I think you will be pleasantly surprised!

Pours a dark amber. Light foam. Light malt aroma. Nutty malt body. Finishes clean. Easy drinking. I could drink these fast and often.

Bought a 12 pack of this the day it dropped at my beverage center for $11.49.

L: Absolutely looks the part. Clear, deep copper color with a 2 finger off-white head that dissipates quickly into a thin eggshell cap. Delicate, yet sparing lacing.

S: Sweet malt, subtle fruit and a little grass on the nose. Mild, yet pleasing.

T: The taste follows the nose with some additional complexity. Sweet malt, mild roasted nuts, subtle toffee, spices and grassy, earthy hops. The mild bitterness in the hops rounds the beer out nicely. Finishes clean.

F: Medium-full bodied, with a crispness that keeps you craving more. Carbonation is spot on with this one.

O: This is a good beer. Factor in the fact that this was purchased at less than $1 a beer in 2023 and you have a real winner! It isn't the best bock I've ever had, but it's certainly the best spring beer at this price point and I will be picking up more!

*EDIT* This beer is absolutely fantastic to use for beer poking. If you don't know what that is, do a quick search. It brings out the sweet malt flavors a bit more without overdoing it.

The price of Genesee seasonals is what counts. None of them are exceptional, but ALL of them are enjoyable. $10 for a 12 pack of these is one of the best deals I've ever seen locally. It's malty, a little sweet. Very enjoyable brew that I would find hard to get tired of

Genesee Brewing Co. "Genesee Spring Bock"
12 fl. oz. can. Production coding is illegible.
$2.33 @ Wegmans, King of Prussia, PA

Notes via stream of consciousness: A crystal clear deep copper colored body with orange and gold highlights is topped by a short head of off-white foam that unfortunately drops rather quickly. In the nose it's malty, a bit sugary, and subtly fruity. The flavor follows with some additional character. It's got a combination of both golden and reddish caramel, some nuttiness, a touch of toffee, and floral, spicy, and grassy hops. A moderate bitterness balances it and along with the spiciness it finishes mainly dry with some lightly sweet caramel, a soft nuttiness, and floral and spicy hops lingering gently. In the mouth it's medium bodied and gently crisp with a very fine-bubbled, seemingly natural carbonation. I'm actually surprised at how good this is. It's not a classic of the style but it is very nicely balanced and rounded, and quite tasty. At just 5.2% ABV you could drink a lot of these but I think it would probably start to become a little cloying after two, and certainly after three.

12oz can into a pint glass. Coding no help in determining exact age, but a Spring release so maybe 7 months or so.

Mixed look. Beautiful crystal clear amber red body. Small off white head disappears quite quickly, no lacing.

Basic sweet and malty aroma.

Taste follows the nose. A little sticky.

Mouth just about medium, it does feel quite lively in the mouth. No bad aftertaste.

Overall, clean, harmless tasting beer. Wouldn't say no to another, but might to a third.

Pours a dark copper with one finger of foam. Smell is malts and grass with a little sweetness. Taste follows. Light fizz…a little watery. Not bad but not a very robust bock.

12 oz can, poured into a pint glass at 40 degrees F.

L: Your standard caramel-colored bock beer, with a fairly thin head that has decent retention.

S: Crystal malt abounds, bready and sweet, with a tinge of grass and flowers.

T: See the notes about the nose, nearly verbatim.

F: Bordering on light for a bock, with mild liveliness to the carbonation.

O: I grab at least one 12 pack of this every year. On occasion I can find it priced at roughly $0.50 a can. For the price point, this is a beauty of a bock.

Tight bubbled head of three fingers initially. It slowly dissipates over the tasting leaving some minor streaks and spots on the glass. The liquid is copper-amber and is crystal clear.

Plenty of crystal malt to the smell. Lots of caramel. Semisweet with just a touch of floral hop in the background.

The beer matches expectations with a full round malty flavor. The body is full. Surprisingly, it isn't as sweet as many Bocks. The hop is nearly imperceptible. There's a hint of alcohol. Short aftertaste of mild toast and lightly sweetened caramel.

I have fond memories of this beer from when I was in graduate school. This was one of the first non-macros I tried. I always felt the picture of the can was an example of very poor marketing. Even though the goat is associated with this beer and the yellow daisy-like asterisks most likely represent spring, I remember thinking this beer would never be taken seriously. For a Bock, it isn't really that bad. I imagine a blind tasting would give this beer far better scores.

Pours amber with a 1 inch white head, which fades to a wisp.

Aroma is malty, a bit grassy.

Taste is malty, caramel, grass.

Thin bodied, light carbonation. Semi-sweet finish.

Not exactly my idea of a Bock but not too bad.

12 oz can from Wegmans. Clear amber pour, small off white creamy head . Malty aroma, woody, minor sweetness. Taste concentrates on the malts, some caramel, light sweet notes. Nothing too fancy, but solid.

First of all a great looking can! Far as away one of Genny’s best. Didn’t have any expectations, just hoping it was better than Genny lagar, which it was. Not too strong and not too heavy with a bit of a sweet after taste. Very nice finish. 12pack 9.99 at Wegmans in Erie, Pa.
