Batch 2 from Begyle...
Poured into a mug, the beer generated a good inch or so of foam that dwindled pretty quickly, after a few minutes there was only a patchy skim left, with a collar of bubbles and an arc of lacing on the other side.
Nice roasty aroma, coffee and bakers chocolate mixed with a bit of charred toast.
Flavor is similarly roast heavy, ashy with a bit of graphite, dry coffee bitterness and unsweetened chocolate. Body is light and slightly watery. Aftertaste is dry with a pleasant roasty bitterness. Could use a tweak or two, but the flavor is pretty nice.

(Served in a Nonic)
Batch #2
A- The muddy opaque black body supports a deep tan head film with lots of jetsam of dark trub suspended in the body.
S- The inky black roasted malt has iodine qualities with a big yeast note and some chalky qualities in the finish.
T- The big dry roasted inky black malt finishes with a slightly spicy finish and a bit of astringent iodine. There is a green woody bite blending with black char and some yeasty notes aswell.
M- The medium-light mouthfeel has a bit scrubbing fizz but no alcohol heat.
O- The big dry black malt is a bit harsh with iodine character and a bit like sanitizer and yeast trub as flavors. There is not a lot of other depth or supporting flavors and a bit of sweetness could really help the malt character.

Picked up this brew as it was my first time to see bottled Begyle beer available in the store. Was excited to try a new local brew.
A - Pours dark and thick like a stout should and very little head.
S - Nice roasted grain and coffee smell. However, the aroma is a little underwhelming.
T - Starts out with roasted malt flavors and ends with hop bitterness. The flavor is much more bitter than expected. The bitterness clings to the palate and leaves a slight sour flavor in the mouth.
M - Given the viscous pour, a much better mouthfeel was expected. The beer feels a bit thinner than it should. The largest problem is that the beer is over carbonated for the style. After sitting and warming for a bit the mouthfeel improves, as does the flavor (even though the beer was not over chilled at the pour).
O - Overall I was disappointed with this beer. I really wanted to like it and to support a local, small Chicago brewery. I will certainly try other beers from this brewery but not sure if I will be purchasing this specific beer again. As this is only one of two bottled beers that has been offered by Begyle so far, I think it is a decent start and the beer will only improve.
