Had it on tap at Hard Rock Cafe in Lisbon. I asked for the darkest beer they had, not expecting much, and was pleasantly surprised.

A - Medium reddish brown color and very clear. Thick off-white head initially; faded to almost nothing. In appearance similar to an English brown ale.

S - Surprisingly rich aromas of warm malt, brown sugar, caramel, even low levels of dark fruits. No hops noticeable. Maybe a hint of alcohol in the background.

T - Tastes again similar to an English brown, very ale-like, although I expect this was a lager like the rest of the Sagres products. Lots of malt, caramel, plum, raisin. Again no hop flavor, but enough bitterness to begin to balance the malt sweetness, although overall it was still a bit too sweet in my opinion. Smooth, clean and easy to drink, although you can sense there is some alcohol in there.

M - Medium to thick body; low hop bitterness; no alcohol burn. Residual sweetnes too high for me, seeming a bit cloying in the finish.

O - Overall a surprisingly good beer, very smooth clean and drinkable. Not the average generic dark Euro lager. By far the most interesting beer I´ve found during my short stay in Portugal. Think of it as a beacon of hope in this desert of craft beer.

Clear and reddish to mahogany brown colour with a thin, bubbly white head on top.

Alcohol laced, sweet smelling beer with some butterscotch and vanilla coming through, maybe even some honey too. There is a slightly creamy smell and some good malts together with some darker fruits.

Vanilla and sweet malts upfront with a bit of a hop character and some good butterscotch too. There is an overall sweetness and some darker fruits in there along with a sort of earthy flavouring.

Smooth and sweet as well as being well balanced and levelled. There is a nice alcohol kick to it but beyond that it is just a pleasant dark lager.

A very nice beer and one that took me a little by surprise. There is a good balance of taste and aroma, with the two pretty evenyl matched and there is a fair bit of favour in each sip.

33cl bottle: best before Feb 2013. Taken on my balcony during a holiday on the Algarve in July 2012.

I wasn't impressed with any beers I tried on the holiday: this beer being about the worst.

Sweet and malty from the off: nasty, cheap and so full of caramel that it was almost undrinkable; and I like sweet malty brews normally. Even the 6.2% ABV couldn't save it.

When in Portugal drink the ro'se wine is my advice.

Poured into a pint glass.

Appearance
Amber/mahogany with excellent clarity. Low carbonation.

Nose
Caramel, candy sugar, hints of toffee & biscuit.

Taste
Biscuity malts with notes of toast, brown sugar and dark candy sugar. Some subtle roastiness going on with cocoa nib and toffee.

Mouthfeel
Medium bodied, clean, crisp and refreshing.

Overall
Tastes like an English Brown Ale which I wasn’t expecting. Quite refreshing and sweet.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a dark mahogany amber with reddish tones. Thin light tan head dissipates immediately to slight patches of bubbles on the surface. Very light aroma of sweet malt with some toasted malt, a hint of dark fruit, reminiscent of a light doppelbock. Flavor follows with bready and toasted malt, faint dark fruit, slight hops. Very similar to a bock, but dryer. Nice malty finish. More flavorful than most Euro dark lagers, but not as sweet and intense as a good bock. Light to medium body with a hint of carbonation. A pleasant lager with a low-key, but nice malty taste; nothing really stands out.

Enjoyed this 12 oz bottle out of a large snifter glass.

A: Pours a dark amber hue with a thick, 2-finger, off-white head that slowly dissipates into a wispy lace leaving a nice trail down the glass.

S: Sweet malty aroma with slight hints of caramel and dark fruits.

T: Surprisingly not as sweet as the aroma – comes off with a slight grassy-bitterness. Very smooth and rich and finishes crisp.

M: Medium body and medium carbonation.

O: Tastes almost like a dopplebock but not as rich. Very well balanced and tasty.

pours a dark caramel amber hue with a decent half finger tan head with decent retention that leaves surprisingly nice lacing for the style.

aroma is of rich earth, caramel, honey, molasses, a hint of straw. maybe a touch of hops. nothing earth shattering, but seems promising.

taste is, as noted previously, almost bock or even dopplebock like. the bottle says amber ale, and it almost begins to remind me of a bier de garde, a la Jenlain. which is certainly a good thing. some earthy caramel notes accentuate the dark fruit intermingling with the pale malt. pleasant and extremely drinkable.

mouth is clean, simple with ample carbonation. it works. not much more to it.

I like this one enough that I can definitely see myself picking up a bottle again. Somewhere between an american amber, a bock and a biere de garde, I'm liking where this one is sitting.

11.2 oz single. Not a bad looking beer at all. nice amber body and a good thick creme coloured head. Aroma isnt to bad either..caramel.bit of nut, resiny hop deep in the back. Sweet malt driven flavour as per style, slightly toasty, slight hazelnut..actually very nice. Liked the palate on this one, quite full and also smooth. Im going to say this is quite a nice dunkel. Im way against the grain on this one!

11.2 oz bottle.

It pours a reddish brown, a tad on the light side for the style. The head is big and off-white and leaves some dirty looking lacing.

It smells like a doppelbock, there is a huge dark fruit sweetness along with a hint of tasted bread that dominates the scent.

The taste is a mix of a euro dark and doppelbock. It has a suprising amount of hops (though not much, but they are atleast noticeable), a big alcoholic kick, and layers of dark fruits.

It isn't anything superb but it will get the job done, probably could have used a tad less sweetness and a bit more bdy.

The color when poured was a clear medium dark amber with a reddish hue. Not much foam, nor lace on the side of the glass.

The smell of roasted malts and mild hops were evident, but, also there was a hint of sweet caramel aroma.

The taste was like the smell or aroma. There was roasted malts, mild hops and touch a caramel and a hint of other spices. A nice balance of sweet/bitterness to the finish. Not to dry nor sweet. This was a pleasant surprise.

11.2oz bottle, Sam Adams glass, a best before date of '02.2011' is on the label.

This beer is not far short of Bock territory in color. It is a crystal burnished red-brown with a fluffy and moderately retentive dust white head.

The aroma is clean, grass, and caramel malt. A little steely.

While this has more body and caramel sweetness than a light lager, it is not much more interesting. Steely sweetness, grass, something artificial, and possibly some nuttiness.

Like I said, this is fuller than most pale lagers and it also reaches towards a Bock in mouthfeel. This is probably the strongest part of the beer, and makes me think this is among the, presumably, few Portuguese Bocks.

This is probably a popular beer in its homeland. It's sweet, full, crisp, easy to drink, and has a fairly high ABV for a standard lager.

A big thanks to Beertruck for the bottle!

A - Pours with a fizzier lightly tan head that actually held pretty well and left spotty toadstool layers on top; clear darker amber brown color

S - Light earthy hop tone; some malt sweetness; pretty clean and basic

T - A little biscuity, dry, and minerally hoppiness show up; touch of sweetish maltiness; pretty well-balanced throughout and a bit fruity; one of the tastier brews I've had in the style range

M - Lightish to medium; nice lively carbonation

D - Pretty quaffable, it's an easy drinking brew because of the flavor balance and it was clean all 'round with no off-flavors.

Overall, a pretty quality example of a brew in a category loaded with pretty bad beers. Glad to have been able to try it. Not bad at all.
